TRUE DETECTIVE on hbo - Season Two

Just the Caspar dude's death and then the Mexican shootout 45 minutes in and then Northern California at 60 minutes and then jump to the final confrontation, of what we have left, and ride that out.

Good movie. No backstories, Paul, bad VV dialogue and subplots. Vague allusions to all those things only.

sometimes reading a thread about a show you're not watching is like being a king, beaming as your foodtasters colorfully debate whether they're being poisoned or not. this is one of those times.

my only hope is that this ends with everyone either wildly enthusiastic or loudly nauseated. it's only sad when these things end quietly, without fanfare.

i couldn't even bring myself to start episode 2. but nothing's stopping from doing it in a few months after all the "so, so worth it" thinkpieces

though i have a feeling the tone will be more "there are worse things i could have done with those 8 hours"

This season would be a lot more fun to knock out in two four-hour blocks over a weekend. Pizza in hand.

i watched the first season 2 episodes a night for four nights and it was pretty great

there was some real strong stuff here imo. farrell wordlessly communicating an entire mental breakdown was impressive.

I think Farrell has been spot on all season and at times it's made me sad we'll never get Miami Vice 2.

which is a movie, now that I think of it, that has some pizzolatto-level lines

the first one I mean

"I'm a fiend for mojitos."
"Let's take it to the limit one more time."
"Time is luck."

the miami vice movie is way underrated because colin farrell was so zingable at the time at came out that ppl couldn't resist and he prob could've had an olivier level performance and still received the same criticisms

(not to mention it's flawed for various reasons but still a pretty solid, better than it ought to be pulp crime flick)

a kind of half-funny, half-lame, late 90s internet/Leno gag would be to show Ani going going undercover with the girls to the sex party and it turns out they're all just going to film a new season of ABC's The Bachelor.

yeah i've always thought this, even when the consensus was that he sucked. he's outstanding in the new world. can do the soulful puppy dog ryan gosling thing well too so i never understood why he didnt have that career. there's a great scene a few episodes back when he's talking to the waitress and his whole demeanor just softens and it's great.

in fact, thinking about it he's probably given the best male lead performance in any of malick's post thin red line movies (too many great performances in that one to really compare).

hoping that this show, failure or not, gets him some worthy roles.

he's also the best argument in favor of the writing because he totally sells even his crazy lines.

yeah lets be honest those three actors are def a step above the vaugn/kitch/mcadams level. which isn't to say any of them have been particularly bad. it's just work to sell this shit.

i am a farrell fan especially en bruges but some of these lines have tumbled out like he opened his mouth and it was full of pebbles, he hasnt come close to touching harrelson & mcconaughey, tho some of that no doubt has to do with the show just being altogether worse, but regardless theres no way he cld do what they did

i mean, mcaughnaheyhey had a setup where he could just dig in for long stretches in the interrogation scenes

and marty was cohle's straight man, that show basically had a cop-show-partners structure for long stretches

gives actors + viewers a lot to get a feel for the characters + writing sensibility with

now we get farrell talking into a voice recorder, mcadams liking big dicks, etc.

vaughn's had some of the most extended / repeated scenes w/ his gangster moll steenburgen

"hey i've just pulled a guy's teeth out with a pliers, let's watch netflix!"

yeah despite allegations of plagiarism and whatnot i thought the first season showed a real writerly competence in the plot construction and how it mediated our relationships to the characters...like whatever else you could say about it, it seemed very much in control of what it was trying to do. this time everything feels a bit out to sea. which is...odd.

not that odd. this time it was cranked out in a relative hurry.

right. if that's true it makes total sense. i can only imagine the first draft of season one was pretty one-note and morose as well.

i caught a few moments of wire-ish transitioning from scene to scene in the last ep, i wondered if maybe he had been trying to go for more of a sweep-of-the-narrative-tapestry something-or-other this time out, only w/o the deep feel for narrative that the wire guys had

this half though monstrosity is a pimple on deadwood's ass but it's still stupidly watchable. can't imagine coming back for s3 unless they switch writers or get a knockout cast tho'
