i just have no thoughts about him where there are a lot of cool stories if other guys win
I felt the same way, but it sounds like he has a good story too--what is the story with his wife they keep referring to?
Way to go Spieth!

She almost died apparently.

It's a pretty good story tbh.
― Possibly Fingers (Tom D.), Monday, 20 July 2015 17:10 (eight years ago) link
Amazing what Spieth is up to.
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:15 (eight years ago) link
Not bad, but what a putt to have to stand over.
― clemenza, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:24 (eight years ago) link
Baseball analysts would have had a field day with the announcer there: "Statistically, this distance is not Spieth's strength, but he's such a clutch player, you can throw the stats out the window." And so he misses.
― clemenza, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:29 (eight years ago) link
Weird--if Spieth sticks his like Day did, and if Day spins his like Spieth did, they're both close.
― clemenza, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:39 (eight years ago) link
spieth gave that a good go
― wisdom be leakin out my louche douche truths (k3vin k.), Monday, 20 July 2015 17:41 (eight years ago) link
couple of painful shots for spieth in those last few holes
― call all destroyer, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:42 (eight years ago) link
Great try--I think Trevino passed Nicklaus much earlier in the round in '72. Contrary to the announcers, I think the pressure did get to him a little bit near the end, on the one putt and on the approach into 18. I'll root for Leishman now, but my interest has dwindled significantly.
― clemenza, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:46 (eight years ago) link
Should have put money on Oosthuizen today.
― Possibly Fingers (Tom D.), Monday, 20 July 2015 17:52 (eight years ago) link
Most folks I know had money on Oosthuizen. Not sure why - they may well have had money on lots of people.

wouldn't have wagered Zach would even be the highest-finishing Johnson tbqh

Doh, Johnson, 2nd shot @ 17
― Possibly Fingers (Tom D.), Monday, 20 July 2015 18:33 (eight years ago) link
not the winner i wanted to see but zach is a good guy. actually worked at the last open in st andrews in another, now distant life, interviewed zach johnson and he was v generous with his time for a crappy kids' tv show.
― doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 20 July 2015 19:10 (eight years ago) link
that's cool to know. i'm catching the end of the playoff now and his interview seems sincere and heartfelt. i totally forgot about him as a competitive golfer between his masters win and now but he beat the best in the game today.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 03:24 (eight years ago) link
gutted for louis but okay with zach winning. i like his old man game, punching most of his shots in, low wedges with hella spin, not much length off the tee.

Some really good golf the last few weekends. Lowry was so fun to watch yesterday with Bubba on his heels. Both guys took turns hitting crazy shots with trees in the way but Lowry hit two of the luckiest amazing shots I've seen to basically win.

huge buzz about him on all the irish sports shows and in the papers etc. i've heard a few kinda dumb "so what makes the irish people love shane lowry so much?" questions and it's like hmmm a large joker who loves his pints and openly says this - what is the secret of shane's appeal in ireland?

so many great shots today. phil was a blast to watch, spieth on the back nine. finau nailing every put. jones hitting the ball out of a spectator tent. tomorrow should be awesome.
― Spottie, Sunday, 16 August 2015 04:36 (eight years ago) link
Day wins but Spieth's year - rightly at no 1
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 17 August 2015 05:38 (eight years ago) link
Dustin had such a bizarre round.

how many majors will jason day win?
― imago, Monday, 17 August 2015 10:28 (eight years ago) link
watched a few holes last night, including jason day hitting maybe the worst shot he's ever hit as a pro (100-yard chip onto the green off the fairway, hit the ground about 3 inches before the ball, sent it 50 yards forward), but he seemed to be playing brilliantly aside from that - he's looked very accomplished every time I've seen him and there was no horror run of bad luck (or vertigo attack) to derail his challenge this time. very pleased for the lad
spieth's consistency is wondrous
― imago, Monday, 17 August 2015 10:34 (eight years ago) link
the standard in this post-tiger era is crazy - there are guys queuing up...
xpost was really nice to see day's reaction and his wife and kid seemed very normal.
― doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 August 2015 10:35 (eight years ago) link
ya reckon lowry will join the post-tigelson frontrunner pantheon (projected: top three at this tournament + mcilroy + maaaaybe reed if we need a bad guy + maaaaaaybe a reprogrammed choke-free dustin johnson)?
― imago, Monday, 17 August 2015 10:40 (eight years ago) link
nah i'd say lowry has a major in him but i dunno if he's at that level. i also actually think for all the lol he he loves a pint stuff if he's that weight he's at a disadvantage to the others - they're all pretty physically fit now, i don't think you can be a serious contender if you're not.
― doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 August 2015 10:43 (eight years ago) link
ah fair enough. you never know, he could win a few. has the look of someone with the ruthlessness to do so, unlike say justin rose, who will probably never win a major despite playing truly exceptional golf in the majority of tournaments he enters. certainly inherited the mantle that was once mickelson's and then garcia's
― imago, Monday, 17 August 2015 10:48 (eight years ago) link
unlike rory mcilroy! rory's dgaf attitude is kinda sad i think. i mean i guess he enjoys himself and he'll win a couple of majors, but he really isn't that arsed.
― doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 August 2015 10:52 (eight years ago) link
oh but rose does gaf! just doesn't quite have the strength of mind. mcilroy sort of does have it, despite his seeming diffidence.
― imago, Monday, 17 August 2015 10:59 (eight years ago) link
for that reason, if justin rose ever does rouse himself to win a major it'd take a particularly heartless idiot or remarkable circumstances elsewhere to not vote for him in that year's spoty
which makes me wonder if lowry is on for ireland's equivalent award this year
― imago, Monday, 17 August 2015 11:03 (eight years ago) link
i'm reading shane ryan's slaying the tiger, which is absolutely worth a weekend if you follow golf, and his profile of day had me really pulling for the guy.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 17 August 2015 11:07 (eight years ago) link
Reckon McIlroy will break Faldo's record for most majors by an European golfer. Inconsistent but he'll find the form at enough weekends to do so and has enough years in him.
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 17 August 2015 11:09 (eight years ago) link
yeah i'd agree with that.
xpost must try that book. was weird seeing rich beam working as a pundit last night, my dad had a book about him when i was on holidays with parents a few years back, very funny stuff.

johnny why man..
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 17 August 2015 11:17 (eight years ago) link
mcilroy will definitely win a few more majors but i bet spieth wins more. and i dunno if that's purely talent, it's hard to say with golf where talent ends and hard work begins. but like most things the latter will probably get you further.
