The other thing I forgot to complaint about re: this humidity is how the parts of our house not served by window units (so the kitchen, bathroom, and dining room) will become covered in mildew in approximately 1.5 seconds once they become damp. It's vile.

It reminds me of when I was growing up in the swampy mid-Atlantic coastal region and we kept envelopes in the fridge because otherwise they humidity would seal them shut.

xxp -- I think a good chunk of that bill was keeping our shop coolish (80F) for 10 days while we had the new kitten out there, when we thought we were just fostering her and didn't want to put her in the house with the other animals. But the next bill will probably be as bad now that the highs are around 100 and the lows are in the upper 70s.

Whitehorse! Remember when I worked with those at-risk kids? The org I worked for had a relationship with member of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation who live in Whitehorse. They came to visit and we had a bunch of workshops with them (we used their peace circle techniques for conflict resolution between the participants at the center). I was outside smoking with the chief and a couple others and it was maybe 80 degrees that day and they were dying. I dint' understand since it wasn't really that hot until one of them said, "This is probably as hot as it's ever been in Whitehorse!".

And you exhaled a plume of smoke and said, "Dude. If you wanna ride..."

Aw, they were the nicest folks. I really would like to go to whitehorse one day but preferably at exactly this time of year. Also PP - my friends were recently in Alaska and took pics of 4th of July fireworks at mightnight in complete daylight and it was so weird to see and try to wrap my head around.

I think my exact words were, "So, when can I visit?" to which they sincerely answered, "Any time! We love having visitors!". I really don't think I've ever met a group of people who were so genuine and sweet.

So you're saying the group from Whitehorse were laid back.

I basically don't sweat but I get miserable in the heat. Instead of really sweating I just get sticky, like someone sprayed a light mist of hairspray all over me.

Which I guess is sweat, but it's more like grease.

in the american midwest for a little while right now and it is so miserable, soooooooo humid (well if you're reading this then you know). it was super hot in western europe a couple weeks ago, over 100F, but the humidity out here in corn land makes for a completely different experience. a bad one. what is this amerikkka

This spring I made it a goal to not hate the heat. I can't make myself enjoy it, but I am seeing how I can be hot without being miserable. It's working out really really well because it's only topped 90° like 3 days this summer.

I can maintain Jesse's attitude for about 16 cumulative hours spent outside in the heat in direct sunlight, and then it's back to hissing and hiding from the sun like a dark-hearted goth.

Yes there's just water pouring off my body any time I'm not hissing and hiding from the sun in an air-tight air-conditioned building. Waiting for the subway is slow misery.

yea the humidity has been out of hand

one thing that is nice about boston in general is that it is rarely hot and humid for longer than a couple days but this week has been fuuuucked, i feel like it's been hot and humid forever

we have fans blowing in "cool" air all night on high speed but it is still like 80 in the apartment when we wake up at 7

i am so grateful i don't have to ride the subway in NYC right now, sympathies to you in orbit, i've been in new york enough in the summer to know how gross it is down there

i often have a hard time towards the end of new england winters, seasonal depression etc., and in feb/march we talk about moving to a warmer climate like north carolina or something, but this time of year i am reminded that it would kind of suck to have it hot and humid every day from may to septmeber. we used to live in DC and every fucking day was like this during the summer. new england summers have some heat but overall they are very pleasant

Humidity and extreme heat make me physically sick. I couldn't live without AC. I don't understand fan people. How do you sleep in 80 degrees? I'd be up all night.

idk, i didn't grow up here but i've been in new england for 7 years and ime you will have like maybe 4 or 5 90 degree days tops and then it will be 80, 85, 75, 70, and the humidity comes and goes. it is not a constant. we get warm southern air coming up and then we get cool ocean breezes. i mean the first week of june here was in the 50s!! i used to live in DC and it starts to be like 85 and humid in mid-may and then it is 90 and humid every single day until september. it is relentless. the heat is not relentless in boston when you compare it to southern cities ime.

also we def have AC units in the bedrooms. we still try to "cool" off the rest of our place with fans.

i mean in DC we need AC running for the entirety of the summer. in boston we really only need AC to sleep for maybe a combined total of 2-3 weeks out of the summer. there are plenty of summer nights in boston when it goes down to the 50s and 60s.

85 with humidity is still a hell though.

lol yeah well ok if you're comparing it to southern cities but I'd pretty much rather die than live anywhere where what you described is the norm and Orbit otm 85 and humid is still hell. I'll sweat if it's 70 and humid tbh. It's the humidity that kills me.

Sunny & I were still cracking up the other day about the White Horse contingent who came to Boston and sweated like pigs.

Then we fell into a fever and saw serpents since we live in one of those Southern cities you just described.

I honestly can't even imagine how awful it must be!

I've only run the AC once or twice this summer cuz 1) it's from the mid-'60s, it can't be cleaned and i am sure it's pumping awful stuff into my apartment, 2) it's expensive.

I was on the elevator returning from a lovely lunch-time stroll and the elevators are really stuffy and gross (also really dark because I guess the building turned down the lights to save energy which is great but also made me feel a little crazy until someone explained why it was so dark) and this woman in the elevator pulled her jacket tight around her and complained about how cold it is today.

She should move to where WmC lives and thinks that temps in the 80s is cool enough for making gumbo and leave the northern cities for the rest of us sweaty broads.

That's nuts! I was looking around at people while waiting for the train the other day (at park street lol) and pretty much dying of the heat when I noticed that there were people wearing long sleeves and one person had on a jacket. Clearly they must have been ill.

The weather guy said high of 80 but I didn't hear the humidity part and I wore jeans and I was DYING on the way in even though it's not even hot. It's just sticky and disgusting. I had to go to park street earlier too and it was awful.
