It's supposed to be more like that from Thus through the weekend this week so that's good but whatever this is outside right now - i hate it a lot.

my mom told me about this surprise anniversary party she went to with my dad, who always wears a suit regardless of where he's going, and it was like 90+ degrees. She said she found him sitting in the garage seated alone, immobile, and offered to take his jacket but all he said was "I'm not going to move" so everyone else was on the lawn waiting for the surprise and my dad was a suited statue in the garage. lol?

Got the kids out of the pool, and while my dad and I were asking my son why he wanted to wear sweatpants instead of shorts in the 102º weather, my oldest returned from her chambers wearing long pants and a knit sweater.
"I was a bit chilled inside," Ms. O'Hara told me.
― pplains, Monday, 20 July 2015 13:55 (ten years ago)
I had to stand in front of our portable air conditioner this morning (damn you odd shaped windows!) to dry the sweat off my face so that I could apply mascara. blah! I also did a few trips back to the cool air while getting dressed. Thank god for work A/C!

It takes me so much longer to get dressed when it's this hot because I have to go lie down on the bed under the ceiling fan so I can fully dry off before trying to put a bra on (putting a bra on a damp body is such a disgusting feeling), then I have to carry all my make up into the living room where the window AC is because I can't put it on in the bathroom since my face is constantly wet from sweat or if not sweat, exactly, then moisture from the air condensing on my face.
I feel bad complaining about the heat since we've had a really lovely, mild summer so far, too, but fuck it, I am just so miserable in this weather.

Whitehorse, Yukon
The other thing I forgot to complaint about re: this humidity is how the parts of our house not served by window units (so the kitchen, bathroom, and dining room) will become covered in mildew in approximately 1.5 seconds once they become damp. It's vile.
It reminds me of when I was growing up in the swampy mid-Atlantic coastal region and we kept envelopes in the fridge because otherwise they humidity would seal them shut.

xxp -- I think a good chunk of that bill was keeping our shop coolish (80F) for 10 days while we had the new kitten out there, when we thought we were just fostering her and didn't want to put her in the house with the other animals. But the next bill will probably be as bad now that the highs are around 100 and the lows are in the upper 70s.

Whitehorse! Remember when I worked with those at-risk kids? The org I worked for had a relationship with member of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation who live in Whitehorse. They came to visit and we had a bunch of workshops with them (we used their peace circle techniques for conflict resolution between the participants at the center). I was outside smoking with the chief and a couple others and it was maybe 80 degrees that day and they were dying. I dint' understand since it wasn't really that hot until one of them said, "This is probably as hot as it's ever been in Whitehorse!".
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 20 July 2015 15:22 (ten years ago)
And you exhaled a plume of smoke and said, "Dude. If you wanna ride..."
― pplains, Monday, 20 July 2015 15:23 (ten years ago)
Aw, they were the nicest folks. I really would like to go to whitehorse one day but preferably at exactly this time of year. Also PP - my friends were recently in Alaska and took pics of 4th of July fireworks at mightnight in complete daylight and it was so weird to see and try to wrap my head around.
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 20 July 2015 15:27 (ten years ago)
I think my exact words were, "So, when can I visit?" to which they sincerely answered, "Any time! We love having visitors!". I really don't think I've ever met a group of people who were so genuine and sweet.
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 20 July 2015 15:29 (ten years ago)
So you're saying the group from Whitehorse were laid back.

people who don't sweat, very weird
I basically don't sweat but I get miserable in the heat. Instead of really sweating I just get sticky, like someone sprayed a light mist of hairspray all over me.
― Je55e, Monday, 20 July 2015 18:06 (ten years ago)
Which I guess is sweat, but it's more like grease.
sweat is the cousin of death
― mookieproof, Monday, 20 July 2015 18:11 (ten years ago)
in the american midwest for a little while right now and it is so miserable, soooooooo humid (well if you're reading this then you know). it was super hot in western europe a couple weeks ago, over 100F, but the humidity out here in corn land makes for a completely different experience. a bad one. what is this amerikkka
― droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 00:43 (ten years ago)
This spring I made it a goal to not hate the heat. I can't make myself enjoy it, but I am seeing how I can be hot without being miserable. It's working out really really well because it's only topped 90° like 3 days this summer.
― Je55e, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 03:28 (ten years ago)

― Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 16:09 (ten years ago)
I can maintain Jesse's attitude for about 16 cumulative hours spent outside in the heat in direct sunlight, and then it's back to hissing and hiding from the sun like a dark-hearted goth.
― from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 17:51 (ten years ago)
fuck this humidity so so hard
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 20 August 2015 15:12 (ten years ago)
Yes there's just water pouring off my body any time I'm not hissing and hiding from the sun in an air-tight air-conditioned building. Waiting for the subway is slow misery.
― Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 August 2015 15:15 (ten years ago)
I know. It's just so gross and uncomfortable and it makes me miserable and everything smells bad.
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 20 August 2015 15:32 (ten years ago)
Bay Parkway smells like garbage just universally. Omnipresently. You think it's coming from one place but it's this hanging miasma on every single block.
There's been a few times in the subway system I've had to concentrate on breathing and not either passing out or having an anxiety attack from inescapability of the heat. I realize every citizen of NYC is in the exact same situation, I'm not a special flower in this. I'm just bad at summer.
― Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 August 2015 16:01 (ten years ago)
yea the humidity has been out of hand
one thing that is nice about boston in general is that it is rarely hot and humid for longer than a couple days but this week has been fuuuucked, i feel like it's been hot and humid forever
we have fans blowing in "cool" air all night on high speed but it is still like 80 in the apartment when we wake up at 7
― marcos, Thursday, 20 August 2015 16:02 (ten years ago)
i am so grateful i don't have to ride the subway in NYC right now, sympathies to you in orbit, i've been in new york enough in the summer to know how gross it is down there
i often have a hard time towards the end of new england winters, seasonal depression etc., and in feb/march we talk about moving to a warmer climate like north carolina or something, but this time of year i am reminded that it would kind of suck to have it hot and humid every day from may to septmeber. we used to live in DC and every fucking day was like this during the summer. new england summers have some heat but overall they are very pleasant
― marcos, Thursday, 20 August 2015 16:04 (ten years ago)
The weather today is fucking AMAZING after many sweating gross days but I just had to give this post an OTM:

I identify with this strongly, esp the part about anxiety attacks from inescapable heat.
― carl agatha, Thursday, 20 August 2015 16:15 (ten years ago)
the park street T station (among others, but it's a major offender) turning into a hellish sauna is the most hideous aspect of boston heat waves
― slothroprhymes, Thursday, 20 August 2015 16:33 (ten years ago)
yes! me too!
also
it is rarely hot and humid for longer than a couple days
huh? I do not agree with this at all! I think we've had it pretty lucky so far this summer but in general I think NE summers are pretty oppressive.

X-POST - PARK STREET IS THE WORST

Fans? Just fans?
Humidity and extreme heat make me physically sick. I couldn't live without AC. I don't understand fan people. How do you sleep in 80 degrees? I'd be up all night.

idk, i didn't grow up here but i've been in new england for 7 years and ime you will have like maybe 4 or 5 90 degree days tops and then it will be 80, 85, 75, 70, and the humidity comes and goes. it is not a constant. we get warm southern air coming up and then we get cool ocean breezes. i mean the first week of june here was in the 50s!! i used to live in DC and it starts to be like 85 and humid in mid-may and then it is 90 and humid every single day until september. it is relentless. the heat is not relentless in boston when you compare it to southern cities ime.
also we def have AC units in the bedrooms. we still try to "cool" off the rest of our place with fans.
― marcos, Thursday, 20 August 2015 17:17 (ten years ago)
i mean in DC we need AC running for the entirety of the summer. in boston we really only need AC to sleep for maybe a combined total of 2-3 weeks out of the summer. there are plenty of summer nights in boston when it goes down to the 50s and 60s.
― marcos, Thursday, 20 August 2015 17:18 (ten years ago)
85 with humidity is still a hell though.
― Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 August 2015 17:42 (ten years ago)
It was reading 75 when I left for work this morning and I was already sticky biking to the subway. I want to stop sweating. No sweat.
― Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 August 2015 17:46 (ten years ago)
"the heat is not relentless in boston when you compare it to southern cities ime"
lol yeah well ok if you're comparing it to southern cities but I'd pretty much rather die than live anywhere where what you described is the norm and Orbit otm 85 and humid is still hell. I'll sweat if it's 70 and humid tbh. It's the humidity that kills me.
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 20 August 2015 18:14 (ten years ago)
Sunny & I were still cracking up the other day about the White Horse contingent who came to Boston and sweated like pigs.
― pplains, Thursday, 20 August 2015 18:16 (ten years ago)
Then we fell into a fever and saw serpents since we live in one of those Southern cities you just described.
I honestly can't even imagine how awful it must be!
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 20 August 2015 18:18 (ten years ago)
Deep winter is also a hell.
I've only run the AC once or twice this summer cuz 1) it's from the mid-'60s, it can't be cleaned and i am sure it's pumping awful stuff into my apartment, 2) it's expensive.
