They had an alliance by marriage with the Rooney's that own the Pittsburgh Steelers - the daughter of that marriage ditched her first name when she went to Hollywood and became Rooney Mara <- the fakest-sounding true fact you will hear today (and nothing to do with Gawker, soz).

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 18 July 2015 09:02 (ten years ago)

Kate Mara is a real foxy gal if you ask me

In the light of the demise of the News of the World and all the subsequent court cases, this is actually quite illustrative in how editorial and commercial pressures turn enthusiastic young journalists into institutionalized perspective-free dead-eyed hacks.

Obviously publishing that story was 100% indefensible because regardless of whether the CFO of Conde Nast is a noteworthy person or whether they facilitated a blackmail attempt, outing people is just wrong.

i've seen gay men argue that outing people is a necessary political act. trash opinion.

This was pretty prevalent in the 80s (usually involving people who were notably homophobic in public and/or connected to the church). It's pretty much bullshit regardless but afaik Geithner doesn't qualify on either count.

Matt DC, Saturday, 18 July 2015 11:44 (ten years ago)

Congrats, you just made the stupidest post in an enormous thread!

no, that prize goes to s clover, several times

i don't have much to add to all this, but if adam weinstein doesn't fit w/gawker 2k15 and jordan does, then i really don't need to read gawker any longer. someone tell me when caity gets a new gig to write for, she is the best.

This whole thing is a bummer
I like Max & j0rd and wish them the best, but def don't agree with what they did. I dunno, I guess having done my own fuckups covering a much less personal beat, I have an in instinctive sympathy

Lol at reinstatement of orig thread title

Tbh i wish him and max the best even though i've always been an outspoken member of the anti-gawker brigade. I don't like seeing anyone in a tough spot like that

Agreed. Let's hope this is the last we hear from these fucks. Ruining people's lives for clicks. I hope they sleep well. Losers.

― Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Saturday, 18 July 2015 04:54 (10 hours ago)

bill and jf on the mark. What they did was disgusting. They can get fucked. I'll never forgive jordan for how he acted on bimble's rip thread, he's just a vile creature that ilx doesn't need.

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 18 July 2015 14:07 (ten years ago)

that isn't how that thread reads to me, but even if we disagree i don't think it serves Bimble's memory to start a fight about it now

not exactly sure why all are assuming this Geithner bro's life is ruined, maybe hre'll come to truly understand himself a la Cait[redacted]

bringing in previous & personal unrelated beef with j0rdan is unfair & irrelevant and yknow just saying again u should not do it itt.

someone already said words to the effect that this is an undeniably shitty act but we've all got those tucked away somewhere. most of us luckily have them tucked far and private enough away not to have ilx threads about them specifically (nb and I do mean b, obv ilx related shitty acts are not covered by this clause) and i doubt we'd relish the scrutiny. so while imo the kicking administered itt for the gross irl act is fair and etc, bringing in whatever other baggage is bullshit.

irl lol (darraghmac), Saturday, 18 July 2015 14:38 (ten years ago)

yeah i think it's a little melodramatic when people go "you're DESTROYING a FAMILY!" because the post was indefensible whether Geithner's life is ruined by or whether his family is totally okay with it

some dude, Saturday, 18 July 2015 15:04 (ten years ago)

haha just remembered that j0rdan blocked me on Twitter years ago idk how I can get angle on this however

after all the most effective way of building your internet brand is building it upon after people's fuck ups, apparently

Well the secrecy that Geithner displays (he didn't want to give Truitt his e-mail address because it meant divulging his last name) indicates that he had something to lose had this encounter gone out of control (which obv it did, prob beyond his worst fears)

the man who posts like Sam Smith sings (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 18 July 2015 16:24 (ten years ago)

I see your point, darragh, about none of us wanting our fuck ups broadcast. But this article was not a spontaneous accident. A whole lot of people were involved in editing it, a whole lot of his colleagues were vocally against publishing it. And none of the people involved in pushing it forward appear to regret it or consider it a fuck-up.

This was not a newsworthy story, it was not even that interesting, it was just spiteful, and reeks of someone/s just enjoying causing a lot of damage and humiliation to a complete nobody-stranger.

Joan Crawford Loves Chachi, Saturday, 18 July 2015 16:32 (ten years ago)

xxp Like it's one thing to be exposed by Gawker, but it's another wholly different thing to have your national humiliation spark a huge national conversation about Gawker's professional ethics that doesn't appear to be going away anytime soon...

btw Google news yoelded at least two articles from the past couple days looking back to when Gawker tried to paint James Franco as a gay rapist, so it seems that this whole controversy has been enough to cement certain patterns of behavior in the public's mind. Outing gay men is prob now a permanent part of Gawker's brand, wtg

They've done tons of hateful shit and are an awful company. Usually ilx has been circumspect about condemning them though though. Sort of stunned by the turnaround tbh

Treeship, Saturday, 18 July 2015 17:04 (ten years ago)

We adjourned together afterward for breakfast with our host and Denton confided that he and his husband — Denton married Derrence Washington last year in a ceremony notable for its high level of privacy protections — were going through the process of having a child with a surrogate. Not long afterward, he invited my girlfriend and me to a book party at his house. At the party, we told him, in the spirit of his own confidence, that we were going to have a baby. He seemed genuinely pleased for us. And then — to bury the hatchet, he said — he introduced us to a coterie of Gawker staffers. They seemed tongue tied — indifferent, if not hostile — but we chatted politely enough, certainly without animosity.

The next day our new pregnancy was revealed with particular malice and bile. "Michael Wolff's Awful Girlfriend is Pregnant," Gawker said about my noncombatant partner. Curiously, a few days later, with someone at Gawker seeming to notice the implicit sexism here, this was changed to "Awful Michael Wolff's Awful Girlfriend is Pregnant." This is survivable, but gratuitous and mean spirited — and also inexplicable.

lol what human garbage do you have to be do do something like that and pretend you're just a reporter reportin' the news

Joan Crawford Loves Chachi, Saturday, 18 July 2015 17:36 (ten years ago)

I can hardly imagine who might hire someone from Gawker, or who would not recoil at the cruelty, obscenity and logorrhea of a Gawker writer's clips. Gawker staffers needed a union to protect the only job they might ever have in journalism.

Ha ha, even coming from someone as douchey as Michael Wolff, that's gotta smart a little.

I totally get that just1ne. none of thats unfair at all tbh.

irl lol (darraghmac), Saturday, 18 July 2015 18:12 (ten years ago)

I guess I can understand Denton's lack of self awareness at being a shitty person given the place he has risen to in life. But aren't most of his writers young enough and recently poor enough to remember having scruples?

Denton: "I do wish there was a better way to address insults without storing up resentment ... I would love to institutionalize and automate some right of response."

J0rdan: "i'm not going to make the argument that the public boards are public and therefore people have to be willing to accept that someone (me) could read a post and distribute that information. that is true, of course, technically speaking, but i don't want that argument made on my behalf. ... i don't trawl ilx for reportable gossip, have no desire to, and, given this discussion and [the time I scared an ILXor off the board by doing just that], will be very conscious of doing it even unintentionally, going forward, if i am not banned."

boxall, Saturday, 18 July 2015 18:20 (ten years ago)

who did jordan force off ILX??

ian, Saturday, 18 July 2015 18:31 (ten years ago)

Xp Gawker was undone by its own hubris imo. The writers became really convinced of their righteousness because sometimes -- i.e. in their conflict with gamergate -- they were clearly in the right. A case of losing perspective.*

* Only applies to the new generation of gawker writers. Clearly Denton and previous staffs were scummy in the past, under differeng conditions, and maybe for different reasons.

the source text is a verbatim gear post from the ilh Bill Simmons thread.

(extremely nerds voice) (Clay), Saturday, 18 July 2015 22:04 (ten years ago)

I feel bad about bringing that up at a time when things are a bit raw bc I feel like it's a separate issue and I feel like it's settled now so I'm going to post what I said before in the other thread here too:

I wanted to reiterate I don't think j0rdan should be banned, since I think with the ILH thing it was more of a fuckup than a malicious thing. like it was a pretty funny and afaik entirely accurate story. I guess I think about it like when I signed the lease on our house and the lease said "don't film here" but within a few months of course a buddy needed a filming location and like a moron I forgot the lease and said yes and our landlord came by and was furious, on the cusp of evicting us (or trying to!) and I convinced him of my ignorance, that it wasn't malice. And now we're cool. I was wrong but more unthinking than untrustworthy. J0rdan apologized to me personally and I accepted it. I really sincerely don't think he'd do that again. The gawker stuff is separate and I don't think he should pay for that here either. We let chris ott post here, he's clearly more of a supervillain than JS.

nomar, Saturday, 18 July 2015 22:16 (ten years ago)

it's on me a bit for not bringing it up at the time it happened, like I said elsewhere I was taken aback and only got more steamed after the fact. j0rdan didn't know what was up and it's not like I've been asking for an apology from him, so his apology is genuine and decent and I consider the matter closed and he's "right with the house" or at least my house. I'd rather not have him taken down on my account since like I said it was a mistake not malice.

nomar, Saturday, 18 July 2015 22:20 (ten years ago)

pareene's response to all this is the most disappointing to me.

People are so committed to nastiness sometimes.

hahaha i am the only person who has an acct here who didn't realize that jordan = j0rdan until this post. i mean i've only been on ilx for 10 years so...

i can't help but see the parallels btw reddit and gawker right now, staffed by ppl willing to cater to the lowest common denominator in the name of ~~free speech~~ or ~~journalism~~. they don't need to die on that hill but they are anyway.

doesn't help that there's another poster here called Jordan
