ready to preorder

i wonder if the entire tenor of the conversation would have changed if j0rdo led with the fact that dude is literally the guy that makes the tough financial decisions about what to do with the profits from r/coontown
― lil dork (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 17 July 2015 14:16 (ten years ago)
probably didn't have a screenshot of a text saying that
you go with the screenshots of texts you have, not the screenshots of texts you'd like

That Jezebel 15-year-old does seem to think she's doing something punk rock

unless she is literally 15 years old, you are a misogynist
― jello my future biafriend (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 July 2015 14:23 (ten years ago)
the people that are aware of conde nast's ownership of reddit and the role that may've played in gawker pursuing this story...don't seem to think any more highly of the post than anyone else
― some dude, Friday, 17 July 2015 14:23 (ten years ago)
this story should obviously not have been published
feeling like 50% of the people decrying it are glad gawker published another gross thing so they can act righteous about it tho, which is also gross
― jello my future biafriend (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 July 2015 14:24 (ten years ago)
seemingly half of gawker's mentions on twitter right now are gamergate guys crowing "we've been saying gawker is bad news for ALMOST A YEAR, here's how you can make them lose ad money my liberal social justice friends!"
― some dude, Friday, 17 July 2015 14:28 (ten years ago)
super glad we're holding conde nast, that sycophantic arbiter of family values, to account
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 17 July 2015 14:34 (ten years ago)
holding the feet of the powerful to the fire
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 17 July 2015 14:35 (ten years ago)
i can't tell who's being sarcastic anymore
anyway running this story was p despicable
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 17 July 2015 14:42 (ten years ago)
gamergaters can tell you why gawker is bad, but they still need a full hour. not fifteen minutes.
― Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 17 July 2015 14:44 (ten years ago)
Yeah what I find super weird is that I don't think this would have been published by even the sleaziest tabloid not because of the moral issues but because who cares about this guy? were they really expecting readers to be grateful to learn about the sexual improprieties of a random corporate dude related to one of the duller members of the Obama administration?
― JoeStork, Friday, 17 July 2015 14:48 (ten years ago)
story would have been newsworthy if hooker could tell us if Geithner was lizard person or not
― Most Scientifically Beautiful Face (President Keyes), Friday, 17 July 2015 14:55 (ten years ago)
I mean, I don't support outing anyone, obv, but I really hate the "defense" that this dude was just some rando
He's the CFO at Conde Nast! He used to be an executive VP at Time! He's a New York media power player, ostensibly what Gawker's original beat was...
― lil dork (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 17 July 2015 14:57 (ten years ago)
haha an EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT!!!
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 17 July 2015 14:58 (ten years ago)
a New York media power player is gay

everybody involved just keepin' mum & movin' onto the next thing it seems, saving up their "lol, internet outrage!" about their reprehensible bullshit for Monday when people still think it was a profoundly shitty thing to do
― Joan Crawford Loves Chachi, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:04 (ten years ago)
"power player" uh huh
― gwyneth anger (patron sailor), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:04 (ten years ago)
one might say he is near the "top" of the media game
― Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:05 (ten years ago)
xps oddly enough that pic was probably taken when facilitating blackmail to the end of outing an exec with a media company would have been accepted as news
― head clowning instructor (art), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:06 (ten years ago)
he's still not a public figure, and honestly who cares? if this story just part of a vendetta against conde nast then how does that make it more justifiable & not less
xp
― gwyneth anger (patron sailor), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:07 (ten years ago)
gawker's original beat was celebrities' real time locations in manhattan iirc
― gwyneth anger (patron sailor), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:08 (ten years ago)
'c-suite exec' is the new 'elite qb'
― mookieproof, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:10 (ten years ago)
For all I know, David Geithner is a huge dick who's mean to his wife and kids, doesn't tip his servers, and sets copies of the Qur'an on fire in the winter to keep warm. None of that matters. I still fail to see why what happened here was newsworthy for any reason other than just outing the man.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:11 (ten years ago)
It seems like they are deleting Kinja comments critical of the article. It's not across the board, but there had been a tidal wave of critical comments (not trolling) this morning hitting basically all the articles on the front page and many of them are gone.
― how's life, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:11 (ten years ago)
I have no idea where the line is when it comes to "public figures"
Is Bill Clinton's brother still a trainwreck? Haven't seen anything about him for a while.
― Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:12 (ten years ago)
xxpost it was valuable as a critique of journalistic standards
― Most Scientifically Beautiful Face (President Keyes), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:12 (ten years ago)

pathetic, really pathetic
― Joan Crawford Loves Chachi, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:17 (ten years ago)
i've been in the camp of "I only read gawker for the thoughtful longform pieces" for a while, but if this backlash sticks it might become harder for gawker to retain any of that credibility with either writers or audience
― gwyneth anger (patron sailor), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:17 (ten years ago)

I like to think that J0rdan has actually hand-built a little throne at his apartment, covered it with plush velvet cushions, and is sitting on it, scrolling this thread with one hand and gripping a brass imitation sceptre with the other, perhaps wearing a crown
― The Bends by Radiohead (imago), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:19 (ten years ago)
i'm guessing more writers will think twice about pitching to gawker if they don't do some serious damage control xp
― gwyneth anger (patron sailor), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:20 (ten years ago)
wait is hl saying that people were spamming up comments sections of unrelated articles in re this?

tbp that was its second beat, og beat was all about nyc publishing ppl
― flopson, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:25 (ten years ago)
if only media companies had to stick with their original beats. Vice on HBO would be way better as 30 minutes of DOs and DON'Ts every week.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:27 (ten years ago)
otm
― Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:29 (ten years ago)
xp to wins: Yeah. Gawker readers were immediately, deeply pissed off about the escort story and the main page has continued publish cute dog videos and celebrity gossip like hey, no big.
― how's life, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:30 (ten years ago)
i hope max and jord are enjoying their intensive media coaching and legal meetings today, maybe they'll get a nice box lunch or something
― gwyneth anger (patron sailor), Friday, 17 July 2015 15:31 (ten years ago)
well max is still posting on other threads here this morning, I'm hoping his silence here means he's legit ashamed of running this garbage
― Joan Crawford Loves Chachi, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:35 (ten years ago)

It's probably more a case of "I can get the same kind of treatment everywhere else. Why engage here?"
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:36 (ten years ago)
Or possibly is aware that this is a public forum of the sort that he might not want to make any statements on if this is going legal. Is there a Gawkerer that would be interested in reporting on this? (not a threat, just curious)
― Andrew Farrell, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:39 (ten years ago)
Gonna say! I thought it was weird they posted here in the first place.
― da croupier, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:39 (ten years ago)

yeah, the fact that they're not aggressively defending the piece here or on twitter makes me think there's a lot of scrambling around behind the scenes right now. but i guess when you point a humiliation laser at people every day, eventually you're gonna shoot yourself. that's not even karma, that's just an inevitability.
they've always been 2 of my fav people here and i've always rooted for them and hoped they'd change gawker more than it would change them, so this is difficult to watch tbh.
― some dude, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:42 (ten years ago)
Frankly anybody defending their employer on ilx is asking for trouble
― da croupier, Friday, 17 July 2015 15:42 (ten years ago)
