And if you get punched in the face, is bleeding optional?

pain is not optional. everyone can and will feel pain. but there is a particular sense in which suffering is not identical to pain and requires the participation of the sufferer. with extreme practice it is possible to experience a fair amount of pain without that specific kind of suffering. I can't do it, but I've made some small progress in that direction.

Suffering being different from pain (and "optional") is one of the tenets third wave of cognitive therapies. But Sungazing is not one of them.
