I read the Chicago subreddit regularly. All the racist hateful shit gets downvoted pretty quickly. And it's a billion times better than the comments on the tribune.

I have no trouble distinguishing those who visit /r/programming and /r/javascript from those who inhabit /r/coontown. I like almost everyone I’ve interacted with on Reddit. But while the inhabitants may be different people, the landlord is the same person, and keeping the lights on in /r/javascript is also keeping the lights on in the Chimpire.

reading about reddit makes me feel old or something. i have no nostalgic attachment to the radical free speech, anarchic environment of reddit et al and generally think it would be a much better place if pao shut down all of the hateful subreddits, using her discretion to decide which ones sucked as the chief officer of a privately owned company. it has nothing to do with the first amendment. people can talk to their friends in their own homes if they want to spew garbage, they aren't entitled to an international platform.

i guess that can't happen now. but seriously, it's so stupid that these people think their right to use reddit as a playground to be shitheads is a political stance.

Reading about Pao, it's kind of insane they picked someone who famously brought a harassment suit against her last employers to head up Reddit. CEO trolling?

Default subreddit: If you just go to the site, the posts you see by default are from a number of default subreddits. A while ago, that list was changed, which is why something like /r/personalfinance and /r/writingprompts is on the frontpage so often now. And I don't think they should be.

these are people that watch videos of people playing mindcraft for hours. i dont think they understand earth v well.
