Same feeling when they dissolve from the waterstain "eyes" in the ceiling to Casper's burnt-out sockets. They probably high-fived in the damn editing room when they did that one.

justin lin will be out the director's chair as of the 3rd episode iirc, so I'm guessing the visual aspects will be a bit more interesting if not on cary fukunaga's level
― slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 18:06 (eleven years ago)
i'm kind of w/max, it's so stilted and weird i'm interested, but it has not been holding my attention well.

two of the other directors, dan attias and miguel sapochnik, are HBO vets from visually accomplished shows - wire, thrones, deadwood, boardwalk - so i trust their abilities, especially sapochnik who did the hardhome episode of thrones w/ the ice zombie battle

the other dude I don't know, apparently a documentary filmmaker or something? it's on imdb

regarding the sleepy, maybe even "stilted," rhythm of this show, and the weird fascination it seems to elicit anyway, i must say that repeat viewings have been very rewarding for me. hbo runs it constantly and every time i start watching i tend to stick around happily until the end.
― ryan, Thursday, 2 July 2015 01:34 (eleven years ago)
this is not good television. the writing is bad, the acting is fine but desperate and the direction looks the same as anything else on the major networks if not just a little bit worse.i suppose i'll stick with it to see if it edges into laughably bad or improves but what a let down.

It's not perfect, but compared to peers like The Bridge, it is clearly best in class
― calstars, Saturday, 4 July 2015 13:40 (ten years ago)
This could use some 90's "erotic thriller" vibe haha
Get Joe Eszterhas to write the next season
― Hell Books (latebloomer), Saturday, 4 July 2015 17:48 (ten years ago)
someone shd reclaim the erotic thriller genre for the prestige tv era
― lag∞n, Saturday, 4 July 2015 17:51 (ten years ago)
i will allow that this is better than the US version of The Bridge (which i opted out of after three episodes) but that's not saying much.i hesitate to bring it up as a comparison but as compared to Hannibal...
― like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 4 July 2015 17:53 (ten years ago)
xp that wd've been an interesting direction for in treatment season 4
― drash, Saturday, 4 July 2015 18:14 (ten years ago)
Is Hannibal a police procedural? Different genre no? (I couldn't make it past the cooking scenes...)
― calstars, Saturday, 4 July 2015 18:15 (ten years ago)
hannibal is partially a police procedural but that element is considerably more muted than it is even in TD but they're joined by a love for camp, weirdness, gross-outs and sadism both on the part of the characters and the creators... plus, TBH, they are both invested in showing you how very smart and complex their storylines are. hannibal does it much better and features consistently innovative and imaginative camerawork on a par (and often better than) s1 of TD.

mannnn the US version of the bridge is full stop incredible in its second season because there's no dumb serial killer plot it's just about the border drug wars
― slothroprhymes, Saturday, 4 July 2015 19:31 (ten years ago)
def gonna check that out
― dutch_justice, Saturday, 4 July 2015 20:46 (ten years ago)
i boiled out on the first couple of eps of the first season of the bridge in that it was terrible and the woman playing """""autistic"""""" was v v v badly writtenyou're saying it got A LOT better?
― like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 4 July 2015 20:48 (ten years ago)
yea diane kruger drops a lot of what I think ppl considered affected about that performance, and you learn the basis for her damage
2nd season is entirely unconnected to the 1st aside from the characters and setting and the only time the serial killer thing comes up is to definitively end it (the villain is caught in s1 but yea it was a terrible plotline). it just gets reallllllly fuckin weird and cormac mccarthyish
