99.9% chance I end up buying this shirt that VG so kindly linked in the Star Trek thread.

Origin mania is silly marketing bullshit. There are two species of beans. They should be well-grown, well-harvested, and well-roasted.

wrong

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 15:04 (eleven years ago)

tbh there is one species of tea iirc and i mean if you can't tell the diff btwn darjeeling and irish breakfast, then...

There are more than two species? They shouldn't be well-grown or well-harvested or well-roasted? The difference between darjeeling and irish breakfast is only the ground the leaves grow in? What?

Origin mania is silly marketing bullshit.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 15:12 (eleven years ago)

do u think the origin of wine is silly marketing bullshit too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 15:13 (eleven years ago)

Should I go and drink some coffee? It's 9.30am and I have nothing in particular I gotta do. Except I have to fdo the thing with the sandal. That.

gatinga, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 15:14 (eleven years ago)

To a large extent, sure. It's also rarely the sole reason for a drinking or purchasing decision. Would you buy a wine knowing only where the grapes had been planted and say you knew what you were buying?

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 15:16 (eleven years ago)

Coffee origins won't tell you everything about a coffee but they're a very good indicator of overall taste profiles due to cultivars, climate, growing methods, etc! A Sidama coffee from one roaster will almost certainly taste more like a Sidama coffee from another roaster than a Matagalpa coffee from the same one.

for old-world wines knowing where the grapes were grown might be sufficient information, sure.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 15:37 (eleven years ago)

OK, you're not a wine drinker. I will endeavor to find a better analogy.

yeah like wld u read a post based just on where the goalposts are planted

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 15:39 (eleven years ago)

You're the one moving them around. I didn't say origin was useless information; I said origin mania, where people talk about origin as if it said everything and announce that they buy and enjoy according to origin, was silly marketing bullshit.

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 15:42 (eleven years ago)

oh origin mania ok champ mania is bad i agree u cn tell by how its called mania

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 15:49 (eleven years ago)

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 15:53 (eleven years ago)

"You might enjoy mosel valley wines". Yeah, people who know wine are always saying that.

And you are an unpleasant little fuckhead with no substance to anything you ever post. I like how anything outside of the collective wisdom of 10 years of American coffee geekery is iconoclasm.

My fully caffeinated coffee seems to have had no effect on me, except maybe to keep me from passing out face first into my keyboard from exhaustion.

There was a request for my mediation. Let's just say I love coffee, and caffeine as well. Dark roast 100% arabica Chemex paper filtered, but otherwise I'm perfectly content with mass market preground coffee.

find it weird that coffee is so healthy

rahrah avis (imago), Thursday, 2 July 2015 01:16 (eleven years ago)

There were two main reason coffee was associated with health harms for much of the 20th century. Coffee drinking was highly correlated with cigarette smoking, and many earlier studies didn't correct for this. And before the 70s (Mr. Coffee: 1972), most coffee was brewed by percolator, French press, or otherwise unfiltered, leaving the cholesterol raising cafestol and kahweol. Paper filters largely remove these diterpenes, but still let through the roasting produced melanoidins that appear to account for most of the non-caffeine benefits.

Its a plant extract with lots of hormetins (mild toxins that induce overall protective effects). Much like broccoli or tea.

I really don't care about (and usually can't detect) "quality" coffee. I just want to stay awake.
