TRUE DETECTIVE on hbo - Season Two

in shows/movies like this a character is only dead for real if they are explicitly brutally slaughtered..velcoro was only shot in the chest, bet he wore a vest

Just watched, I thought this was a lot better, even if it's still pretty drab compared to the first season.

The performances are still uneven though. I lol'd at Farrell's shrug to the "dualities" line a - a good comic bit, perfectly times. But he was so mushmouthed during other moments (the feminism line, the confession at the end) and I don't buy his convenient shift from sadsack to supercop.

Vaughan was actually totally okay this time 'round - the confession scene wasn't as embarrassing as I was expecting, and he was great in the car pullover scene. I feel like he could get better.

McAdams - it's unclear yet whether it's bad acting, or her character's just like that.

Also - I have hearing problems, so it's always hard for me to judge, but is the dialogue *really* difficult to hear?

Yeah Vaughn was prob best in the scene when he was being a menacing smart ass to the dude who just got his ass beat by Vaughn's thugs

that being said, i have to admit that if this were some sleeper HBO thing without months of fawning pre-press i think i would be recommending it? with caveats, obviously. it isnt nearly as subtle or arresting as the first season (the unsung genius of which was, again, fukunaga!) but its also such an abstract formal exercise in a genre i really love that i can't look away. the dialogue is riding that line between lynch/ellroy/hammett opaque bluntess and self-important pure corn syrup.

i guess what im saying is, i hated this before it was cool to hate it, and now im going to like it before it gets cool to like it again.

i think it kinda did! i mean, maybe not so shitty it became good, but it became shitty in a way i can vibe with

if this was just some hbo one-off called L.A. Detective Files i would def be watching and probably evangelizing

what happens if it gets un-pulpishly good, like you're watching episode five & finding the plotting sophisticated, the production sympathetic, the performances mature &c&c

If Eyes Wide Shut had been a miniseries, it would have been trashed after the first episode. It takes a while to know whether a style becomes engaging or not, whether the suspension of disbelief kicks in.

i'll wonder even more why he chose to structure the first two episodes in such a dumb way xp

i was thinking today that the first season is good bc the story unfolds like a fractal, or maybe good stories unfold like a fractal, idk where i was going with this but it sounded cool when i thought it

the timeline shifting in s1e1 is handled expertly and i think we mostly have fukunaga to thank for that but it also feels like the work of a writer who knows he needs to grab your attention as hard as he can.

the scene in the morgue with the flashbacks to each of the true ds getting their assignments was just terrible. i think taylor kitsch is good tho, like he did a google image search for "unhappy face" and is doing his best to emulate

that was pretty bad, like was it necessary to learn in sequence that they all were given an ulterior motive?

it's a fine plot device but was handled v. clumsily

Same feeling when they dissolve from the waterstain "eyes" in the ceiling to Casper's burnt-out sockets. They probably high-fived in the damn editing room when they did that one.
