- drunk mayor so great, like 70's cop movie "whats the fuckin point we're fucked" Dirty Harry great.
- i kinda like the banality of the city politics and Vaughn's trynamakeit guy. His line readings are bad but there's something about him...he's like toxic algae, trying to grow & get along in a sludge pool. you dont want him to succeed but it's kinda fascinating that he would a) try or b) WANT to. And i love the desperation angle now that he knows he's got nothing: that makes ppl make crazy bad decisions :D
- rick springfield loool so good, behind the candelabra lizardperson realness

please dont have killed farrell
as entertained as i am by the season on some level, i'm wrapping up the season 1 pilot and there's more wit and rhythm in the first 20 minutes of that episode than there's going to be in all of season 2.

maybe this one will end better tho

the flowers, the big hug mug, making the car a place of silent reflection.
like, you can do the sucking a robot's dick line, but not the way they did it.

season 1 set a plot in motion and then made you love the characters, season 2 tried to put together a wikipedia on the characters before starting the plot.

feel like comparing this to season 1 is pointless. they shoulda just named it something different like 'sad detective' or w/e
― Spottie, Tuesday, 30 June 2015 04:19 (eleven years ago)
I hope there is a lot more of the mayor--there's a rust cohle vibe to the drunken poetry of the way he talks.

please dont have killed farrell --difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl)
there is a bunch of farrell footage throughout the teasers that hasn't been seen in the two episodes and this would be a LOT of work for a misdirect. I think he's ok, but prob hospitalized for like 2 episodes

Still unsure about this; I like the loving shots of industrial landscapes and the To Live & Die in LA-like depiction of a polluted, corrupt city. It feels a bit lifeless, though, and the dialogue clunky. And I know that as a mystery it has to be deliberately vague about some things, but I'm surprised people are able to follow this, because much of it loses me. Perhaps partly it's the show's low energy that makes me zone out a little, but I had no clue what to make of some scenes in this. The Rachel McAdams' porn search scene? And that girl with the scarred face in the bar. I had no idea who she was or what that scene was about. She looks an intriguing character, though.
I think once you get past the distraction of it being Vince Vaughn, he's fine in the role. I really liked that scene where he was warning that bookie off after getting his thugs to attack him. Am liking Taylor Kitsch, too, though his character hasn't been well served as yet.
I was missing the folk horror imagery and weirdness of season 1, but there are small, strange touches to this season that are beginning to build up. An odd, inexplicable cut-away shot to a geod with a vaginal pattern, and a creepy Rick Springfield (reminded me of Rob Lowe's plastic-faced character in that Liberace thing last year). And of course the finale in the soundproofed house with masks on the wall - and a camera set up in another room. So, who was it wearing the Judex crow mask? Rachel McAdams' father?

There was that, but then I wasn't sure if she wandered to something else. Or if the blurry hardcore was just part of her searching those sites.

this is ‘true detective’clearly antigone is complicated guyspuritanically judges her sister (wd prefer her to be on drugs than sexcam)hates her fatherlikes some kink in sex yet shuns intimacyporn watching (close-up on her eye) involves true detective & sister-savior parts but also other stuff
virtually any scene involving any of the protagonists is obv & explicitly about their central psych issues (e.g. scars from the past); this is no exceptionof course rick springfield knew her father & end of scene is about her childhood

Just watched, I thought this was a lot better, even if it's still pretty drab compared to the first season.
The performances are still uneven though. I lol'd at Farrell's shrug to the "dualities" line a - a good comic bit, perfectly times. But he was so mushmouthed during other moments (the feminism line, the confession at the end) and I don't buy his convenient shift from sadsack to supercop.
Vaughan was actually totally okay this time 'round - the confession scene wasn't as embarrassing as I was expecting, and he was great in the car pullover scene. I feel like he could get better.
McAdams - it's unclear yet whether it's bad acting, or her character's just like that.
― Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 09:44 (eleven years ago)
Also - I have hearing problems, so it's always hard for me to judge, but is the dialogue *really* difficult to hear?
― Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 09:46 (eleven years ago)
Yeah Vaughn was prob best in the scene when he was being a menacing smart ass to the dude who just got his ass beat by Vaughn's thugs

that being said, i have to admit that if this were some sleeper HBO thing without months of fawning pre-press i think i would be recommending it? with caveats, obviously. it isnt nearly as subtle or arresting as the first season (the unsung genius of which was, again, fukunaga!) but its also such an abstract formal exercise in a genre i really love that i can't look away. the dialogue is riding that line between lynch/ellroy/hammett opaque bluntess and self-important pure corn syrup.
― max, Wednesday, 1 July 2015 11:58 (eleven years ago)
i guess what im saying is, i hated this before it was cool to hate it, and now im going to like it before it gets cool to like it again.
