This rarely happens with Maron's podcast, but I had to jump around on this morning's installment - really I wanted to hear about the making of Wayne's World - because I just couldn't roll with the guest's voice/cadence for a sustained period of time.

She sounds just like one of my aunts. I like that aunt, so I'm actually enjoying this quite a bit.

This also happened when MM interviewed Annabell G..something, and when Bret Easton Ellis interviewed Gus Van Sant. A rare thing.

Spheeris's voice reminded me of Kim Gordon.

The original was really hard to obtain for a long time, so I haven't seen it since I was in high school and I don't remember a ton about it. Part II is ridiculous and awesome though!

For some reason I can handle Todd Solondz's voice over long stretches. Maybe I'm weird or something

i'm just reading the latest Pryor biography, with Spheeris editing his shapeless avant garde film til Richard throws the reels in the fireplace.

Have some trepidation about the Laura Jane Grace interview, because Maron is historically contemptuous or flippant about things that confuse him, often with no ill will intended, but it's still uncomfortable. Hope I'm proven wrong.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 6 July 2015 17:15 (ten years ago)
he as usual makes much of the interview about his own discomfort around the topic
― Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 6 July 2015 17:58 (ten years ago)
It's a really good interview until he gets to the topic of transgender/transphobia/etc. Laura Jane Grace is a better person than I am to put up with Marc's creepy idiocy.

― let no-one live rent free in your butt (sic), Monday, 6 July 2015 23:03 (ten years ago)
Tbh Maron handled it a lot better than I expected after that terrible intro.
He just fixates on the stupidest minutiae, in a way where he acts like he's brave for bringing it up but instead it's like "dude dont say that out loud, its dumb"That stuff undermines his intentions, which I think *are* mostly good,. If he stuck to the emotional conversation, trusted the curiosity ... if wishes were horses etc
Fixating on the clothing was like dude whyyyyyyy stop no argh
And Laura was considerably more patient than she had any right to be, hats off to her for real
But then again maybe someone like Maron *trying* to have the conversation and half-succeeding is better than not at all...and who knows, he may get a portion of his listeners to think about trans issues differently, even if it's not an ideal conversation

― difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 6 July 2015 23:07 (ten years ago)
Maron is, effectively, a dad or the uncle you avoid talking to. Well-meaning but totally bumblefuck when he opens his mouth.
― that's why god destroyed the radio (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 6 July 2015 23:57 (ten years ago)
Also, I know his TV show is almost unwatched in here so I'll just point out that last episode had him screwing a college girl and several characters reiterating statements along the lines of "Marc, what you're doing is AMAZING, man, no one's ever done what you're doing."
― that's why god destroyed the radio (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 6 July 2015 23:58 (ten years ago)
An edgy but also worshipful college girl.

I hated that ep on so many levels
Sometimes I can kinda watch it, but mostly no

I was never a fan of his show but I think Season 3 is a big improvement. The episode about making a baby for a lesbian couple was hilarious. I haven't seen the episode that Gott Punch is referring to tho. Yeesh.
