xp who are the other macho english prof novelists with shows? most of the golden age showrunners were tv and movie vets or came from other mediums entirely (simon). also most of the biggest literary names, the franzens etc, have the douche part down but the macho....not so much lol
if you just mean the maleness in general, well...yeah. still a problem for which i sadly don't see a real corrective on the horizon
― slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:46 (eleven years ago)
he's saying there are umpteen macho novelist english profs and this is the one that lucked out
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:47 (eleven years ago)
Getting the showrunner gig is what I meant by "the golden ticket" - last thing I'm doing is suggesting his career arc is common for English profs
― da croupier, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:47 (eleven years ago)
ah, well that's fair, and accurate. theyd prob have better luck if they tried writing crime novels!
i have a sneaking suspicion that jacket or not nic pizzo is prob a total dork - not exactly kurt sutter over here - but yeah he's p much steered into the skid of all jokes that get sent his way
― slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:52 (eleven years ago)
I know its wrong but I can't stop calling him Enrico palazzo
― da croupier, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:54 (eleven years ago)
Guys I work in TV and can assure you that "Showrunner" is a title most folks in low-level Production positions salivate over. Most of these people are also unable to tell Cary Grant from Godard BUT they can name all the characters on "Friends". It's something that probably helps them in the long run, actually. I don't work in fictional (scripted) TV so things may work differently in Pizza Land.

Also agree with Veg that Farrell is awesome in this role.
― Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:57 (eleven years ago)
Farrell is the best thing about it

i'm glad i watched this because it helped me remember the name/website of terry rodgers, who must be the nic pizzolato of erotic art

― gr8080, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 22:09 (eleven years ago)
farrell doing his best with a thankless role for the bazillionth time in his career just makes this show all the sadder imo
― da croupier, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 22:19 (eleven years ago)
As mentioned in the Celebrity Spottings ( can't remember title) thread Farrell was a nice dude when I shared a smoke break with him some years ago. Thought it was funny when I told him I enjoyed "Alexander". I therefore cheer him on.
― Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 22:39 (eleven years ago)
I have been a Farrell stan from day 1 - i had no doubt he could bring it.... but I was still kinda blown away by how good he is. "Coyote" is def the best description of his character

Farrell has been the best thing about every movie he's been in since that smile he flashed Tom Cruise as he gave him a beat down in Minority Report.
― Popture, Thursday, 25 June 2015 10:08 (eleven years ago)
dunno if I'd call Farrell's scenes in this good but they're definitely the only non-boring parts. "12 years old and already evil as fuck" being the highlight
everything everything was a serious snooze
― Number None, Thursday, 25 June 2015 10:18 (eleven years ago)
one thing that worked in the first season that doesn't seem like it's going to happen here is that marty to act as a straight man of sorts for the weirder, more damaged rust. not sure who's going to fill a role like that here since none of these cops seem well-adjusted enough to be an audience stand-in.
also, i don't know what actor could save some of the lines vince vaughan had to deliver but it's not vince vaughan.

i agree with this
― 龜, Thursday, 25 June 2015 11:30 (eleven years ago)
was thinking on twitter that what's the point of grim nihilism if you cant also be funny about it
i may continue to watch this for vince vaughn though - what are some of the lines he had to say?
'behold what was once a man?'
'a good woman mitigates our baser desires"
he doesn't know how to sit on a syllable, it's great, it's like watching a ventriloquist work with a corpse

this is perhaps repeating what others have already said but...
i had insomnia last night so i watched episode 5 from last year, "The Secret Fate of All Life" (the "time is a flat circle episode"). one thing that was immediately apparent was the sense of wit and timing in the performances (finding humor in places you woulnd't think to look for it), the fluidity of the direction and cinematography, a real poignancy to the language. granted this was much further into the season than we are this time. i wonder if some sense the leads last time knew how to play the over the top dialogue with a bit of levity, which makes all the difference. much is made of the cliche of the detective with dark secrets, but rust and marty are pretty much the men they present themselves to be.
but i think part of the reason the wit is gone is that this time the characters, despite all appearances to the contrary, are really totally different. i hesitate to use the word "competent" but Rust and Marty both had some modicum of their shit together, were good at their jobs, were essentially (infidelity and hypocrisy notwithstanding) ok people. rust has a code and marty is only in the process of fucking his life up. these new characters are more or less already at bottom--the only arc is up, right?
― ryan, Friday, 26 June 2015 15:49 (eleven years ago)
ya cld be the performances/directing just elevated the writing above its baser tendencies last season
― lag∞n, Friday, 26 June 2015 15:51 (eleven years ago)
xp right on. i want to give season 2 a chance to make these characters seem more human and three-dimensional (i.e. we need to see the good in them along with the damage), but although i haven't watched it recently that element was pretty much there in season 1 episode 1.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 26 June 2015 15:54 (eleven years ago)
i've heard from some who've seen beyond the first episode that there's some dark humor at the expense of the constantly drunk mayor in later episodes, and since richie coster plays him and is a phenomenal drunk actor (dractor?) im looking forward to that

oh my god how great would it be if the show dropped clues throughout the season and then in the penultimate episode asked 'Who do you think did it?' encyclopedia brown style w/ the last episode giving the correct solution
