an interesting counterpoint (or double bill) with that season would be top of the lake, which approached a somewhat similar rural noir story from a woman-driven and very psychologically and thematically complex perspective, they share the same director of photography interestingly wnough

yeah if that scene bothers you the this is probably not the show for you.

I like a good stare-off (the Good Wife and Justified did them pretty well) but this was one was just so ridiclously elongated and portentous - and again, it's the actors that failed it and made it ridiculous, not the setup.

I think the worst part of the first episode was that part when we see that Rachel McAdams' character has vices too-- how ironic!

actually, i like to see fucked up & dark female protagonists, so won't complain too much yet

just don't buy that character or performance yet

I think mcadams is decent with what she's given and that she can be better - but she hasn't been given much as yet

Man the director and stars of season one were so good

I liked the community paintball episode and fast five but I don't feel like this script played to justin lin's strengths. Or anyone's, really.

Still gonna watch episode 2 cuz the dynamic between woody and Matt was part of what made s1 great and the team didn't get together until the end of this ep, but man...that reeked of sophomore slump

Though for keeping the three separate all I got about each was that they were all "at the end of their rope".

This is the first positive review I've read that felt at all convincing, and has made me rethink Farrell's performance a bit.

definitely also v heavy three-character ellroy vibes (eazy mentioned him upthread iirc, props) - big nowhere, L.A. confidential, the american tabloid trilogy and perfidia all do this to great effect.

This is a piss-poor copy of Ellroy though....and directed by the douchebag who brought you Fast and Furious 6. It makes me wonder how much of the success of TD S1 was down to the great direction. I loved the first season and I did really want to like the new season especially since everyone was expecting it to fail.

I have been a Farrell stan from day 1 - i had no doubt he could bring it.... but I was still kinda blown away by how good he is. "Coyote" is def the best description of his character

fish joke comes from a profile of him seeming to pay specific attention to him eating branzino, which become joke fodder on twitter for a while - not sure why but i dunno shit about fish, maybe branzino is like fancy or w/e

(i'm generally all for mocking artists even when they make shit i like, a la matt weiner being a complete sociopath who literally robbed writers on numerous occasions)

xp who are the other macho english prof novelists with shows? most of the golden age showrunners were tv and movie vets or came from other mediums entirely (simon). also most of the biggest literary names, the franzens etc, have the douche part down but the macho....not so much lol

Guys I work in TV and can assure you that "Showrunner" is a title most folks in low-level Production positions salivate over. Most of these people are also unable to tell Cary Grant from Godard BUT they can name all the characters on "Friends". It's something that probably helps them in the long run, actually.
I don't work in fictional (scripted) TV so things may work differently in Pizza Land.

Also agree with Veg that Farrell is awesome in this role.
