it's totally also about white male angst, for sure.

an interesting counterpoint (or double bill) with that season would be top of the lake, which approached a somewhat similar rural noir story from a woman-driven and very psychologically and thematically complex perspective, they share the same director of photography interestingly wnough

top of the lake was good

as was true detective, we are blessed

lol

yeah if that scene bothers you the this is probably not the show for you.

I like a good stare-off (the Good Wife and Justified did them pretty well) but this was one was just so ridiclously elongated and portentous - and again, it's the actors that failed it and made it ridiculous, not the setup.

I think the worst part of the first episode was that part when we see that Rachel McAdams' character has vices too-- how ironic!

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:44 (eleven years ago)

the cool girl

lag∞n, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:50 (eleven years ago)

this show is about white male angst and nothin but

also, a sexually confusing ‘woman with father issues’

so… you may not be wrong

drash, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:52 (eleven years ago)

actually, i like to see fucked up & dark female protagonists, so won't complain too much yet

just don't buy that character or performance yet

drash, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:55 (eleven years ago)

I think mcadams is decent with what she's given and that she can be better - but she hasn't been given much as yet

i hope next season has 4 damaged detectives

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:59 (eleven years ago)

otm add one damaged detective each season

lag∞n, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 03:00 (eleven years ago)

we're all true detectives down here

ok finished the first ep, i'm in

it's right in my washed-up police wheelhouse, impossible for me to buy in, esp when farrell's mustache game is so good lol.

i agree that it's ellroy-esque but only to a light degree: nicky pizza loves the brooding silences too much for it to be good ellroy, rip snappy dialogue...more like urban cormac mccarthy dosed with a xanax :)

still trying to diagram the buttfuck yr dad with yr mom's headless corpse thing. like what does that even...how do you

Man the director and stars of season one were so good

da croupier, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 05:00 (eleven years ago)

I liked the community paintball episode and fast five but I don't feel like this script played to justin lin's strengths. Or anyone's, really.

da croupier, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 05:14 (eleven years ago)

def miss fukunaga. i like his film work but tbh i hope he ends up doing more tv work in future.

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 05:37 (eleven years ago)

Still gonna watch episode 2 cuz the dynamic between woody and Matt was part of what made s1 great and the team didn't get together until the end of this ep, but man...that reeked of sophomore slump

da croupier, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 05:49 (eleven years ago)

Though for keeping the three separate all I got about each was that they were all "at the end of their rope".

da croupier, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 05:52 (eleven years ago)

This is the first positive review I've read that felt at all convincing, and has made me rethink Farrell's performance a bit.

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 09:37 (eleven years ago)

definitely also v heavy three-character ellroy vibes (eazy mentioned him upthread iirc, props) - big nowhere, L.A. confidential, the american tabloid trilogy and perfidia all do this to great effect.

This is a piss-poor copy of Ellroy though....and directed by the douchebag who brought you Fast and Furious 6. It makes me wonder how much of the success of TD S1 was down to the great direction. I loved the first season and I did really want to like the new season especially since everyone was expecting it to fail.

and directed by the douchebag who brought you Fast and Furious 6.

and 4 and 5, let's be reasonable here, as well as a pretty good indie pseudo-crime flick called better luck tomorrow way back in the day that i always really liked

he's not gonna be directing all of them, one or two will be done by the guy who made the "hardhome" episode of game of thrones this season

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:07 (eleven years ago)

do we have new pizzolato zing material, the leather jacket and the fish he ate that one time is losing its spark

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:08 (eleven years ago)

oh i'm sorry i didnt realize that was an already played out joke

gr8080, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:10 (eleven years ago)

what is the fish joke

gr8080, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:12 (eleven years ago)

that Grantland review Shakey posted is otm re Farrell's performance

I have been a Farrell stan from day 1 - i had no doubt he could bring it.... but I was still kinda blown away by how good he is. "Coyote" is def the best description of his character

lol was not really being combative about it or anything, he's p mockable for many reasons

fish joke comes from a profile of him seeming to pay specific attention to him eating branzino, which become joke fodder on twitter for a while - not sure why but i dunno shit about fish, maybe branzino is like fancy or w/e

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:31 (eleven years ago)

(i'm generally all for mocking artists even when they make shit i like, a la matt weiner being a complete sociopath who literally robbed writers on numerous occasions)

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:32 (eleven years ago)

It's just funny seeing one of the umpteen macho novelist English profs get the golden ticket like this, almost feel bad his sophomore slump is compounded by having lost his a+ collaborators. Then I remember what he's given the new ones so far.

da croupier, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:38 (eleven years ago)

Right now I feel worst for kitsch, bad dialogue is one thing but trying to emote with the wind in your face like that? Hasn't he been through enough?

da croupier, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:42 (eleven years ago)

i liked how his face was flapping around good acting imo

lag∞n, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:43 (eleven years ago)

xp who are the other macho english prof novelists with shows? most of the golden age showrunners were tv and movie vets or came from other mediums entirely (simon). also most of the biggest literary names, the franzens etc, have the douche part down but the macho....not so much lol

if you just mean the maleness in general, well...yeah. still a problem for which i sadly don't see a real corrective on the horizon

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:46 (eleven years ago)

he's saying there are umpteen macho novelist english profs and this is the one that lucked out

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:47 (eleven years ago)

Getting the showrunner gig is what I meant by "the golden ticket" - last thing I'm doing is suggesting his career arc is common for English profs

da croupier, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:47 (eleven years ago)

ah, well that's fair, and accurate. theyd prob have better luck if they tried writing crime novels!

i have a sneaking suspicion that jacket or not nic pizzo is prob a total dork - not exactly kurt sutter over here - but yeah he's p much steered into the skid of all jokes that get sent his way

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:52 (eleven years ago)

I know its wrong but I can't stop calling him Enrico palazzo

da croupier, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:54 (eleven years ago)

Guys I work in TV and can assure you that "Showrunner" is a title most folks in low-level Production positions salivate over. Most of these people are also unable to tell Cary Grant from Godard BUT they can name all the characters on "Friends". It's something that probably helps them in the long run, actually.
I don't work in fictional (scripted) TV so things may work differently in Pizza Land.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:56 (eleven years ago)

Also agree with Veg that Farrell is awesome in this role.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 21:57 (eleven years ago)

Farrell is the best thing about it

tayto fan (Michael B), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 22:06 (eleven years ago)

i'm glad i watched this because it helped me remember the name/website of terry rodgers, who must be the nic pizzolato of erotic art
