but i'm glad people havent forgotten luck! had to end for obvious reasons but coulda been something truly great

it helped that Milch knew that millieu inside and out and was able to filter it through his very specific sensibilities, whereas this is a made-up macho fantasy land we've seen before, and done better xxxp

pretty sure raymond chandler was in the oil industry before he started writing. the noir genre has always included a lot of fantasy. tho i'm sure working for the pinkertons helped hammett

I don't think the dialogue is signficantly worse this season, but the acting has to be the lousiest I've seen in a big-deal TV show like this.

True Detective seems to be written by a dumb person who hasn't had any interesting life experiences. Good TV tho.

I get why people think this sort of moment and others like it are dumb but I kinda love that stuff...this specific subgenre is very much MY SHIIIIIT as key and peele would say so it's hard to be too critical even when my objective brain identifies certain scenes as OTT or silly

the three of them looking at each other like a western standoff was a tad goofy but that final pull back shot w/ the waves crashing beside the highway and the park crime scene looking like a scar in the earth was vivid

There was nothing dumb about that scene. 3 alpha dogs sizing each other up, that's how it goes baby.

re: the actual last shot i noticed the second time through how it almost looked like a film set, with the lights surrounding the body and the three leads. which i thought was pretty cool.

a lot of this (esp for some reason the long drive w/ the dead city manager) reminded me of chinatown + i'm sure that was intentional esp liked the way that the crime bisected the 3 jurisdictions - the city, ventura county, and the highway running between them

definitely also v heavy three-character ellroy vibes (eazy mentioned him upthread iirc, props) - big nowhere, L.A. confidential, the american tabloid trilogy and perfidia all do this to great effect.

oh absolutely. ray velcoro is prob most akin to dave klein in white jazz - so, the most heinous ellroy protagonist other than dudley smith, lol - in that there might have been decency somewhere but it's long gone

an interesting counterpoint (or double bill) with that season would be top of the lake, which approached a somewhat similar rural noir story from a woman-driven and very psychologically and thematically complex perspective, they share the same director of photography interestingly wnough

I like a good stare-off (the Good Wife and Justified did them pretty well) but this was one was just so ridiclously elongated and portentous - and again, it's the actors that failed it and made it ridiculous, not the setup.

I think the worst part of the first episode was that part when we see that Rachel McAdams' character has vices too-- how ironic!

actually, i like to see fucked up & dark female protagonists, so won't complain too much yet

just don't buy that character or performance yet

I think mcadams is decent with what she's given and that she can be better - but she hasn't been given much as yet

i agree that it's ellroy-esque but only to a light degree: nicky pizza loves the brooding silences too much for it to be good ellroy, rip snappy dialogue...more like urban cormac mccarthy dosed with a xanax :)
