but i'm glad people havent forgotten luck! had to end for obvious reasons but coulda been something truly great

it helped that Milch knew that millieu inside and out and was able to filter it through his very specific sensibilities, whereas this is a made-up macho fantasy land we've seen before, and done better xxxp
― fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:59 (eleven years ago)
pretty sure raymond chandler was in the oil industry before he started writing. the noir genre has always included a lot of fantasy. tho i'm sure working for the pinkertons helped hammett
― Mordy, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 20:05 (eleven years ago)
"btw, why is it always called 'degenerate' gamblers?"
If you ever worked as a betting shop manager you would get some insight into this!
― xelab, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 20:17 (eleven years ago)
I don't think the dialogue is signficantly worse this season, but the acting has to be the lousiest I've seen in a big-deal TV show like this.
― Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 20:34 (eleven years ago)
Doubt it was the Black Mountain School

Would be awesome haha.
― Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 22:51 (eleven years ago)
/this is a lot better than the Luck pilot/wtf no
wtf no
The luck pilot was so good, it never lived up to it tho
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 23:00 (eleven years ago)
True Detective seems to be written by a dumb person who hasn't had any interesting life experiences. Good TV tho.
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 23:01 (eleven years ago)
This was terrible. That end scene with everyone looking at each other like "looks like us fucked up people are gonna get into some fucked up stuff, huh?"
― tayto fan (Michael B), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 00:30 (eleven years ago)
i liked colin farrell in it though
― tayto fan (Michael B), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 00:31 (eleven years ago)
kinda hard to judge it yet
― Spottie, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 00:34 (eleven years ago)
but def wasn't the most engaging pilot
This was terrible. That end scene with everyone looking at each other like "looks like us fucked up people are gonna get into some fucked up stuff, huh?" --tayto fan (Michael B)
I get why people think this sort of moment and others like it are dumb but I kinda love that stuff...this specific subgenre is very much MY SHIIIIIT as key and peele would say so it's hard to be too critical even when my objective brain identifies certain scenes as OTT or silly
― definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 00:41 (eleven years ago)
the three of them looking at each other like a western standoff was a tad goofy but that final pull back shot w/ the waves crashing beside the highway and the park crime scene looking like a scar in the earth was vivid
― Mordy, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 00:46 (eleven years ago)
There was nothing dumb about that scene. 3 alpha dogs sizing each other up, that's how it goes baby.
― Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 00:48 (eleven years ago)
yeah if that scene bothers you the this is probably not the show for you.
re: the actual last shot i noticed the second time through how it almost looked like a film set, with the lights surrounding the body and the three leads. which i thought was pretty cool.
― ryan, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 00:50 (eleven years ago)
a lot of this (esp for some reason the long drive w/ the dead city manager) reminded me of chinatown + i'm sure that was intentional esp liked the way that the crime bisected the 3 jurisdictions - the city, ventura county, and the highway running between them
― Mordy, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 00:51 (eleven years ago)
definitely also v heavy three-character ellroy vibes (eazy mentioned him upthread iirc, props) - big nowhere, L.A. confidential, the american tabloid trilogy and perfidia all do this to great effect.
― definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 01:06 (eleven years ago)
yeah i wish i had the time to read some ellroy along with this. big nowhere in particular.
― ryan, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 01:09 (eleven years ago)
i was holding off bcz i wasnt sure but if theres ellroy vibes then cool
― difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 01:10 (eleven years ago)
oh absolutely. ray velcoro is prob most akin to dave klein in white jazz - so, the most heinous ellroy protagonist other than dudley smith, lol - in that there might have been decency somewhere but it's long gone
― definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 01:14 (eleven years ago)
This is v Ellroy minus all minorities/racial politics
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 01:21 (eleven years ago)
there it is
― definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 01:22 (eleven years ago)
I mean, that's not invalid to mention but idk id rather this season not touch on those aspects than botch them (which is a lesser of two weasels scenario I know)
― definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 01:28 (eleven years ago)
Well, given that the last season took place in fucking Louisiana and never brought up race once, I'm confident this season will do the same.
― the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 01:51 (eleven years ago)
Yeah come on this show is about white male angst and nothin but
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 01:56 (eleven years ago)
just tried to think abt other things the show is about but youre right thats it
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:05 (eleven years ago)
the cardinal sin of crime fiction what a world
― definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:07 (eleven years ago)
the flawed first season was also about classism and the poisoning of religious belief among the poor for the benefit of the rich but you know
― definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:08 (eleven years ago)
idk maybe
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:09 (eleven years ago)
i mean not that theres anything wrong with that
it's totally also about white male angst, for sure.
an interesting counterpoint (or double bill) with that season would be top of the lake, which approached a somewhat similar rural noir story from a woman-driven and very psychologically and thematically complex perspective, they share the same director of photography interestingly wnough
― definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:13 (eleven years ago)
top of the lake was good
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:14 (eleven years ago)
as was true detective, we are blessed
there shd be a scene where his failson teaches farrell a slang word and then he looks bewildered behind his depression mustache

I like a good stare-off (the Good Wife and Justified did them pretty well) but this was one was just so ridiclously elongated and portentous - and again, it's the actors that failed it and made it ridiculous, not the setup.

― drash, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:35 (eleven years ago)
I think the worst part of the first episode was that part when we see that Rachel McAdams' character has vices too-- how ironic!
― Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:44 (eleven years ago)
the cool girl
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:50 (eleven years ago)
this show is about white male angst and nothin but
also, a sexually confusing ‘woman with father issues’
so… you may not be wrong
― drash, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:52 (eleven years ago)
actually, i like to see fucked up & dark female protagonists, so won't complain too much yet
just don't buy that character or performance yet
― drash, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:55 (eleven years ago)
I think mcadams is decent with what she's given and that she can be better - but she hasn't been given much as yet
― definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:57 (eleven years ago)
i hope next season has 4 damaged detectives
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:59 (eleven years ago)
otm add one damaged detective each season
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 03:00 (eleven years ago)
we're all true detectives down here
― definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 03:02 (eleven years ago)
ok finished the first ep, i'm in
it's right in my washed-up police wheelhouse, impossible for me to buy in, esp when farrell's mustache game is so good lol.
i agree that it's ellroy-esque but only to a light degree: nicky pizza loves the brooding silences too much for it to be good ellroy, rip snappy dialogue...more like urban cormac mccarthy dosed with a xanax :)
still trying to diagram the buttfuck yr dad with yr mom's headless corpse thing. like what does that even...how do you#lolwhut
― difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 03:26 (eleven years ago)
*imposible for me NOT to buy in
