Anderson Cooper did a whole panel segment on it tonight

on the one-hour interview, or about literally one single word that Obama said in it?

someone go back to the Patrice O'Neal episode and check whether he used any mildly off-colour words when discussing racism, I'll get my handkerchief ready for fanning

If you're ever in need of a textbook example of missing the forest for one tree, this is it. So much pearl clutching over the use of the word that it seems to have shut down the conversation on every other point he was making. Bravo, America!
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 07:54 (ten years ago)
I think it was on the usage. The sound wasn't up on the wallscreen in the restaurant.
― Purves Grundy (kingfish), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 09:33 (ten years ago)
listening to O for an hour isn't really like a forest, unless the trees are being bombed, deported, or mined for metadata.

He didn't even bother coming up with a "witty" nickname for Obama. He must have been tired.

I listened to the first 5-10 mins of this before falling asleep (out of tiredness rather than boredom). I'll listen later. I've never heard Marc sound so nervous interviewing anyone.
― tayto fan (Michael B), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 15:35 (ten years ago)
Maron: I've interviewed the president on WTF. Will you do my show now?Lorne Michaels: He's been on SNL more than once, so no.

It's just: We *know* he's shitty and the foreign policy is awful and he never closed GitmoBut he's also interesting sometimes and he was on Marc Maron's podcast and that's super interesting.Nobody was going crazy cheerleading or anything.
But either way: Get well soon, on the real

Sorry, jumped the gun the other day.
I've been a regular WTF listener since the start of the year. I'd never even heard of Marc Maron before then (I live in Ireland), but I'd finished Serial, was looking for a new listen for my commute, and Slate or somewhere had his interview with Louis CK as the best podcast ever. I think the first one I heard was Chris Parnell, and I was hooked.
With that weirdly limited perspective on Maron, I was totally blindsided by Obama showing up on Monday's show. But the interview itself was a letdown, really. MM was out of his depth on the politics, and Obama wasn't gonna let himself be psychoanalyzed, unfortunately.
Obama reminds me of Blair these days. Deeply compromised, defensive of his legacy, at heart so much more a technocrat than any kind of leftist. And with a lot of blood on his hands (which either man would say is part of the job I suppose). His use of *that* word seemed to me like a highly calculated move, although my understanding of the issues involved is pretty shallow.
I want to send Dr Morbius my best wishes too. ILX is where I get my U.S. politics news, and for what it's worth, as a more-or-less Communist European, I usually agree with Dr M!
I'd also like to wish Dr M the best.
― Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Thursday, 25 June 2015 20:06 (ten years ago)
eh that was an editing error obviously, but I don't mind sending those wishes twice!
― Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Thursday, 25 June 2015 20:07 (ten years ago)
yeah i was hoping Marc would ask him some questions on drone strikes but it wasnt to be and he gave Obama free reign to do his Mr. President thing.
and yes best wishes to you, morbz
― tayto fan (Michael B), Thursday, 25 June 2015 21:33 (ten years ago)
wd like to express heartfelt best wishes to morbius too& say imo the dr is not monotonous (any more than any of the rest of us, on subject of politics)he just tends to be the only one to voice certain things (though others may think them)i differ from him politically in various ways, but appreciate his perspective/voice
― drash, Thursday, 25 June 2015 21:58 (ten years ago)
haha it was pointed out to me that on the latest episode of WTF (which is apparently just Maron and some other guys discussing the Obama interview for over an hour!? jesus), at the 74-minute mark they read some mean tweets about Maron and one of them is mine:https://twitter.com/alshipley/status/612066552867876865

This rarely happens with Maron's podcast, but I had to jump around on this morning's installment - really I wanted to hear about the making of Wayne's World - because I just couldn't roll with the guest's voice/cadence for a sustained period of time.
