definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 04:33 (eleven years ago)

should prob be performed by sharon van etten rather than a B-level sharon though

i liked when mcadams threw her plastic up at the casino bouncers

lag∞n, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 04:47 (eleven years ago)

One ep in but this seems both dumb AND stupid which is a bummer

lol 'justin longness'

drash, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 06:07 (eleven years ago)

dunno about this

can’t decide if it’s interestingly stylized/ alienating piece of work or amusingly flawed (& what’s the diff)

all the actors might just as well be wearing tragic masks

that lynch-esque industrial hum/ wind-like sound (& thumps), accentuating dread/ uncanny, ran through virtually every scene, so it started to seem funny instead (yet toward end there were effective moments of dread/uncanny)

something entertainingly ridiculous about those ostentatiously damaged lost souls (thinking baout things) “assembling [into] kinda dysfunctional bureaucratic Avenger foursome”

wonder what sex thing antigone was into (‘sometimes’) that spooked guy
yes, plan to call her antigone
lol antigone & athena with father issues

is there new topographics influence in the cinematography?

drash, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 06:14 (eleven years ago)

one thing that worked in the first season that doesn't seem like it's going to happen here is that marty to act as a straight man of sorts for the weirder, more damaged rust. not sure who's going to fill a role like that here since none of these cops seem well-adjusted enough to be an audience stand-in.

also, i don't know what actor could save some of the lines vince vaughan had to deliver but it's not vince vaughan.

anal stuff seemed properly thematic xp

Mordy, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 12:58 (eleven years ago)

As a more-or-less uncritical fan of the first season, I thought this was awful. It’s so dour it might as well be a DC Comics superhero movie - it’s like bad Howard Chaykin.

Not a single good performance, either – Farrell and McAdams out of their comfort zones and knowing it on their faces; Kitsch and Vaughan just actively bad. Vaughan was good when he wasn’t speaking, though.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 13:01 (eleven years ago)

that pretty much sums up my take. I laughed uproariously after farrell used brass knuckles to beat the father of the kid who was bullying his son following the "mother's headless corpse" line. like yeah, we get it! he's not a nice guy! how many underlines do you think are required here for appropriate emphasis?

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 13:03 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, that was scene that made me think of Chaykin -- although really it's more like bad Frank Miller.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 13:23 (eleven years ago)

vince Vaughn reminding me of all those noir heavies as played by Raymond Burr. Farrell was Farrell which is expected. R. McAdams is just a shitty "actress" in everything. John Carter, Warlord of Mars a total blank.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 14:36 (eleven years ago)

Still - I enjoyed this mess.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 14:36 (eleven years ago)

Chaykin is a v good call. Altho he would've included at least one jewish character lol

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 14:40 (eleven years ago)

it is mostly good and often smart and sometimes dumb and in a few instances/and aspects objectively bad.

Sounds kinda like Faulkner, Ellroy, anyone with a distinct style swinging for the fences.

Story of the real town that's the model for Vinci: population 100, with city officials earning more than $1 million a year.

What?

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 17:52 (eleven years ago)

Covering similar geography, this is a lot better than the Luck pilot, especially in reining in the auteur flourishes when setting up a season-length story.

... (Eazy), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 18:31 (eleven years ago)

Also, that father/son dictaphone is going to lead to no good.

wtf no

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 18:59 (eleven years ago)

fewer dead horses tho

Mordy, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:02 (eleven years ago)

luck was crappy. this was....not exactly crappy, but not exactly good either.

akm, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:17 (eleven years ago)

at times it seemed like a parody of everything else; the killing, the fall, true detective, Mulholland Drive.

akm, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:18 (eleven years ago)

oh yeah luck, that's why 'mayor austin chessani' looked familiar

luck was better; dennis farina, come on

drash, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:23 (eleven years ago)

twin peaks (dictaphone)

drash, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:24 (eleven years ago)

speaking of farina, a few times during the premiere i felt like i was watching a heavily stylized episode of L&O, esp when they're talking to a witness and they use the same 'naturalistic' cadences that every interview in L&O have

Mordy, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:25 (eleven years ago)

Luck was 100000x better, if only because Milch dialogue >>>>> Pizzo dialogue. (Also much more interesting to look at.)

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:28 (eleven years ago)

lol colin farrell has a failson

lag∞n, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:44 (eleven years ago)

as soon as the failson and his bullies appeared I literally said to the buddy I was watching it with "oh man please let Colin Farrell beat up a child". Show m/l delivered on that count.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:47 (eleven years ago)

otm re dialogue. character interactions on luck felt 'real', in short time built & conveyed sense of characters' shared worlds. dialogue on td2 feels so strange-- yes like stylized l&o, or like characters speaking to each other aren't even in same room/space with each other (maybe point is they're all living in their own isolated worlds/heads)

drash, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:56 (eleven years ago)

its pretty unfair to compare any dialogue to milch's because almost all of it pales in comparison, even on shows i like better overall than luck and deadwood tbh

definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:57 (eleven years ago)

And John from Cincinnati!

Luck was so good! There is this scene where three of the degenerate gamblers (btw, why is it always called 'degenerate' gamblers?) go to feed carrots to their horse, while the fourth is off playing poker. And Kevin Dunn says, without irony, something like "Stupid idiot. Trying to make money when he could be here with us feeding carrots to a horse" I think about that sentiment quite a lot.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:58 (eleven years ago)

but i'm glad people havent forgotten luck! had to end for obvious reasons but coulda been something truly great

definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:58 (eleven years ago)

it helped that Milch knew that millieu inside and out and was able to filter it through his very specific sensibilities, whereas this is a made-up macho fantasy land we've seen before, and done better xxxp

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:59 (eleven years ago)

pretty sure raymond chandler was in the oil industry before he started writing. the noir genre has always included a lot of fantasy. tho i'm sure working for the pinkertons helped hammett

Mordy, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 20:05 (eleven years ago)

"btw, why is it always called 'degenerate' gamblers?"

If you ever worked as a betting shop manager you would get some insight into this!

xelab, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 20:17 (eleven years ago)

I don't think the dialogue is signficantly worse this season, but the acting has to be the lousiest I've seen in a big-deal TV show like this.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 20:34 (eleven years ago)

The luck pilot was so good, it never lived up to it tho

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 23:00 (eleven years ago)

True Detective seems to be written by a dumb person who hasn't had any interesting life experiences. Good TV tho.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 23:01 (eleven years ago)

This was terrible. That end scene with everyone looking at each other like "looks like us fucked up people are gonna get into some fucked up stuff, huh?"
