don't let the enthusiasts/hobbyists put you off. don't bother with the disposable ones. just buy one with a reasonable battery that you can refill. there is a part (the atomizer) that you have to change every once in a while. the most complicated thing is probably the shame of smoking it in public, honestly.

tpp, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 15:54 (ten years ago)

i got over it by reminding myself that it's better than dying. and by being as discrete as i can i suppose.

tpp, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 15:55 (ten years ago)

Xps

ha i visited house of vapes a few weeks ago - found the steampunk faux-sophistication (dark wood/leather/brass) finely balanced between tacky and crepey.

woof, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 15:56 (ten years ago)

limited observations from my second hand exposure to this, pun intended

fedora dudes might get vapey but vape dudes don't seem to lean especially fedora.
in fact, in terms of intersections, i've been interested/surprised by the sort of gearhead-y element of the culture: the emphasis on what equipment you use, and the equipment modding subculture.
the real overlap with fedors dudes and other oddballs is the v much embarrassing phenomenon of these ppl wanting to totally make this thing their identity

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 15:57 (ten years ago)

my friend got this one i think:

http://www.joyetech.com/product/510CC.php

it's only a little larger than a normal cigarette and i think when she smokes it she almost pulls off looking cool? she is kind of a naturally cool person tho

tpp, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:02 (ten years ago)

the first time i went in that shoreditch vape shop (i think it had a different name then?) it was completely empty. the guy who worked there was sat at the counter twisting some special coil for his steampunk custom device. it was pretty intimidating and i left feeling it was all way too complicated and gearhead-y. recent visit was better though - they were quite helpful.

tpp, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:07 (ten years ago)

x-post - It's not really. I just started about 3 weeks ago? I'd been smoking an e-cig with disposable cartridges for a year and a half but realized how much money I was wasting. This is significantly cheaper. In those three weeks I've fallen down the internet rabbit hole and picked up a lot of stuff and it seems a lot less intimidating than it did at first.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:07 (ten years ago)

Another thing I've been thinking of is that aside from the gross #vapegirls/models thing - it seems to be largely male dominated and that makes me want to infiltrate even more but not in a "sponsor me and I'll stick this pen between my boobs kind of way".

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:10 (ten years ago)

(I am embarrassed by all the typos in my warning up there but I am at work and trying to multitask)

So, what the hell is dripping? n.b. I'm perfectly happy with my simple set-up but, as I said earlier, the whole thing is totally fascinating and weird to me.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:12 (ten years ago)

i love this stuff but hate the word 'vape'. isn't really another term i guess, though i say 'smoking ecigs' which is verboten because the militant guys want to distance it from smoking as much as possible due to all the legal shit going on.

btw anyone doing it for coolness, or not doing it for coolness is missing the point in a big sad way.

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:12 (ten years ago)

okay bye thread, if not weed then idgaf

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:15 (ten years ago)

i could prob advise on most stuff to do with this if ya want. got a good % of my smoker mates into it, and subsequently quitting real cigs.

top tip: make your own fluids, v easy & works out about 5% of the cost of buying it readymade.

mother's milk is good, thick strawberry cream stuff, though might not work in your set-up as it's a thick gloopy fluid.

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:16 (ten years ago)

there's always gona be cringey crap about any new thing, just gotta ignore it.

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:17 (ten years ago)

Let's all come together and start a very subtle, well-designed, and good e-liquid company. Maybe this is out million dollar idea!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:18 (ten years ago)

one of my friends is into this and the way he is constantly sucking on that thing like a baby pacifier is a bit disturbing.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:18 (ten years ago)

x-post - I have a kanger pro-tank II. It might not work in there? The other ones I have from that company do. Hmmmm. That would suck.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:19 (ten years ago)

Sorry. I'm totally fascinated by it though and am planning a stealth mission to a vape con to see if I can figure it out more.

fully support this endeavour. and while we're at it can we resurrect ilx grand scheme of infiltrating awesomeness-fest

tpp, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:20 (ten years ago)

i dunno, i see this whole 'look at how ODD it looks' is just the shock of the new. remember a whole lot of pisstaking of people using mobile phones when they first became affordable round the mid 90s. seems like that. what i love most is when grandads get into it, totally ditching all the 'is it ok, does it look daft, what will people think' junk around it, just doing it because it's a great mostly harmless vice, love that mindset. more ecig grandads pls

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:21 (ten years ago)

xpost, ah yeah that tank should work. that whole high-end stuff (suicide bunny, cosmic fog, etc) works best in a sub-ohm tank but that's a whole next level of nerdery that i dunno if we should go into on here. my favourite of the SB liquids is madrina, the melon one. spent months trying to recreate it, almost almost there i think (got MM sorted though)

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:23 (ten years ago)

i support this call for vaping grandads and now need to start a bad called exactly that

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:24 (ten years ago)

ugh "band"

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:24 (ten years ago)

x-post - yeah see that's where I get confused. can you explain in simple terms what a sub-ohm tank is? Also, dripping? I have no desire to get any nerdier or more into this stuff but I do want to know about it.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:25 (ten years ago)

I've found that vista vapors seems to be a really high quality place for lower priced liquids. I'm waiting for a couple from there right now. They also let you boost the flavor or make your own blends and they're very reasonably priced.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:28 (ten years ago)

ENBB - Mother's Milk was one of the first I tried that wasn't generic cherry or licquorice or w/e. I def liked it - not wild on it, but it was good. I might order it again sometime, now I am an experienced vaper-of-the-world. Not wild on the tattooed babe cupping her breasts on the bottle.

but I'm moving away a bit from US liquids, just bcz it's cheaper to get British ones here.

Maybe I'll start mixing my own? Feel no pressing need right now

I do not understand that word of sub-ohm dripping and that.

woof, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:34 (ten years ago)

ok in simple terms a sub ohm tank is a tank where the heating element gets really hot really quickly but without actually burning the cotton. it means your fluid is turned into vapour v fast so you get a big rush of smoke. the flavour is a lot more intense with these (and you get the whole silly 'cloud chasing' shit). it's not really a relaxing toke, but there's something really satisfying about it, esp with these expensive fluids.

few things to know:
- you need to lower the nicotine in the fluids you use for this. im down to 3mg for all my stuff now, anything above 6mg will prob make you feel queasy due to the amount of nicotine in each toke.
- you need a battery strong enough to use them. you want one that goes up to 30w really. you can go higher but don't bother at this stage.

i'd give it a go, some people really love it and it's interesting at least.

basic set-up: get the kanger subtank mini (about £25 i think), and an istick 30w (again about £25) and fluid that's high vg (anything above 70 vg to 30 pg is good to go)

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:34 (ten years ago)

Yeah NI bring the nerdery I am interested

(xp thank you!)

woof, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:35 (ten years ago)

don't bother about dripping, again in basic terms the sensation is mostly the same as using a sub-ohm but with a lot more messing about. if you're really into trying different flavours in quick succession without having to replace your coil or finish a full tank of fluid then it's worth looking into but i wouldn't bother.

ps. with the subtank mini you want your coils to be 0.5ohm

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:36 (ten years ago)

yeah so much of the aesthetic around ecig stuff is crass and bleugh. the biggest uk site, totally wicked, has this shitty little devil logo, like some 90s skater dude crap. plus all the suicide bunny cartoon porn crap. i do think this stuff will level out though

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:39 (ten years ago)

totally baffled by this stuff tbh. so it's basically tobacco companies co-opting tech developed by stoners as a way to stay ahead of plunging customer-base/legal problems?

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:41 (ten years ago)

hate to big up the enemy but reddit forums are really good for learning about all this. they're surprisingly fedora-free, mostly hobbyists spreading the knowledge

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:42 (ten years ago)

wasn't developed by stoners as far as i know, and the majority of the (decent) kit/fluid companies are independent businesses

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:42 (ten years ago)

I'm telling you guys. This might be our big break! ;) That's one of the things that fascinates me. I want to figure out how it went down that route. The porny part is mystifying too and I don't really get all the cloud pics I see on IG. It's not sexy, it's just weird? I guess people will turn anything into a fetish though so I shouldn't be all that surprised at all.

I was, however, quite surprised that I couldn't find any evidence of Faygo flavored ejuice.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:43 (ten years ago)

Yeah, most of the fluid companies and hardcore vapers seem to be very anti big tobacco.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:43 (ten years ago)

Yeah I looked at reddit (I feel really deep down the rabbit hole) but they were all ohms this and coils that and wicks and builds and my eyes just kind of glazed over.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:44 (ten years ago)

wasn't developed by stoners as far as i know

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:45 (ten years ago)

yeah it's a shame that the public image of this stuff is all fat guys in porn t shirts blowing big mounds of smoke. determined not to let normal people be put off by all that

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:46 (ten years ago)

I vaped weed before I vaped nicotine and I think that it's been a widely used stoner thing but I don't think it works by the same mechanism at all. I could be wrong there though. I just had a friend who had a week vaporizer and used it a couple times. I have no idea how it worked.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:46 (ten years ago)

first time I saw a vaporizer was at least 15 years ago and it was a black box for smoking weed

ha, i had one of those in the 90s. this is different though, involves heating cotton soaked in fluid containing nicotine & flavouring where as my one was just obliterating weed in a vacuum, like a full-on microwave. similar in the way it involves heat but a different mechanism. the exact process that took off was developed in china about 10 or so years ago, but there have been various similar ideas floating around for decades, none of them based around cannabis really.

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:49 (ten years ago)

this is worth a read, about the guy who invented the modern successful version:

Hon’s own moment of revelation came when he woke up one morning after a night full of bad dreams and realised he had been wearing his nicotine patch while he was sleeping. He came to think that the only satisfactory way to deliver nicotine alone in a relaxing fashion which might enable one to give up conventional cigarettes was through some form of smoking.

http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/jun/09/hon-lik-e-cigarette-inventor-quit-smoking-dual-user

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:50 (ten years ago)

huh weird

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:51 (ten years ago)

there's another ecig thread on here, but it went down a (not-uninteresting) rabbit-hole of the rights and wrongs of addiction. worth a read though

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:51 (ten years ago)

Yeah I looked at reddit (I feel really deep down the rabbit hole) but they were all ohms this and coils that and wicks and builds and my eyes just kind of glazed over.

yeah, the learning curve for all that ohm, wick, coil stuff is v steep. took me a good while to get my head around it. im in the early stages of setting up a grandad style ecig guide site to counter all that, crazy how most stuff out there is either super advanced tech stuff, or dumb misinformation based around those disgusting disposable things. the middle ground shouldn't be as hard to get into as it currently is

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:56 (ten years ago)

Woof - I'm pretty much exactly where you're at with all this in terms of interest etc. though I'm sure you know more. Looking forward to getting the MM. I have a couple of the cheaper ones and expecting a peach/mango and cinnamon one from vista this week. They make them all up once you order and your name is printed on them which is kind of neat.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:57 (ten years ago)

the existence of 'gothic vash' depresses the shit out of me. more classic shots here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2324697/Meet-vapers-E-cigarette-craze-inspires-bizarre-new-sub-culture.html

although that article was the point where i thought, what is this thing? so three cheers for gothic vash and the daily mail, i guess

I know this is a vape thread and not an "I quit smoking" thread, but can I just say? I can smell someone light up a cigarette from, like, a mile away now and it smells terrible. I hate thinking about how I was bathed in that smell for 26 years. Also, the not coughing all the time thing is a huge bonus.
I gave up smoking 19 years ago and just yesterday was sniffing wistfully at the delicious secondhand fumes outside the train station

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Saturday, 25 February 2023 18:34 (three years ago)

I switched from smoking to vaping in 2020 and never looked back. But its deveoped its own set of issues. I cough now, a lot, and I never did with cigs for some reason. I was also a "bum suck" smoker as we call it, like I'd puff on cigs but rarely inhale. With vapes you kid of have to cos of how it works, and now I find I am having dreadful nic fit headache/withdrawal urghiness cos I only vape like thrice a week (when drinking). In other words I think I'm now hooked on nicotiene and wasnt really, before? I know it sounds crazy.

I use juul and equivalents, but my fave flavovur, Pods+ iced pineapple, seems to to have disappeared much to my distress.

I find the majority of vape flavours gross - too sickly sweet, or weirdly milky, or chemical tasting. This was the only one I could stomach for long stretches. Annoying.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 27 February 2023 01:53 (three years ago)

You didn't inhale cigarettes? idg the point otherwise lol

ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 March 2023 18:27 (three years ago)

my buddy's 14 year old son is heavily addicted to vaping - they have to constantly search his room, and he'll purposely leave empty ones for them to find so they won't find his real stash. He has ADHD and apparently vaping really doesn't help with that condition at all

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 1 March 2023 18:32 (three years ago)

Vaping teens piss me off. I finally get the cigarette addiction beat by switching to vapes, and then almost immediately the US Gov't puts up all these hurdles FOR THE CHILDREN I have to jump through (particularly with mail order). I guess I could start going to local vape shops for pods/liquid, but those places seem corny and/or gross.

I see a lot of youngish people buying disposables at the onestop and used ones are littered everywhere, this is deffo a boom time for the vape industry. And I noticed the UK brand Dinner Lady have expanded into the disposable market now, their Lemon Tart flavour is good btw. In the early days I was avowedly against this kind of thing and then I got addicted to nicotine again during the lockdown. Now I'm a VAPE ADDICT. Currently deciding if I should buy another Zenith II tank after my last one developed a leak after only 2 months of use.

How does everyone suddenly have these disposable vapes…yuck

calstars, Sunday, 25 June 2023 17:45 (two years ago)

I don't buy disposables but can understand why a lot of young people are buying them. Soaking and cleaning the tanks in between coils can be a pain in the arse. And young people don't like doing the washing up.

I gave up smoking cigs (roll-ups) about 15 years ago but since my kids have grown up, and our house has become a bit of a hang-out for dusty yutes, I've been having a go on a few vapes here and there. Stupidly bought my first disposable one the other day and can already feel it getting out of hand. Duh.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Saturday, 11 May 2024 21:27 (two years ago)

i'm seriously wondering whether this is antagonising my anxiety and whether i shd try and stop it. i'm not really heavy vaping, probably use it less often than i used to smoke, but right now i've got an unpleasant baseline anxiety at least half of my time and i'm willing to look at anything that might get that down. couple of months without cigs now tho so...sigh ffs

But yeah that little nagging voice saying “have a vape”… not great

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 8 September 2024 13:53 (one year ago)

i'm thinking that the nicotine hit from the vape is probably adding to my anxiety in a different way than cigs do. not going back to smoking, just cautious about giving up the crutch altogether

Yuwen Hu's army (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 8 September 2024 14:33 (one year ago)

I'd get into some anxious/wired states from vaping heavily and drinking too much coffee. I'm into going into my 6th week without vapes and onto a strict coffee a day diet. Although still a slave to the nicotine through patches and pouches, but down to 14mg per day now. I was having various health problems that I know was a combo of doing too much of various things, well booze as well to be specific. I feel much better now, and also some of that is down to not drinking for 4 days. I chose the perfect time to give up my vices because I can't even afford them anyway -yay! migration to Universal Credit - it's actually had a positive influence on my life!

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Sunday, 8 September 2024 15:07 (one year ago)

Vaping got banned in Australia this year. It was never being well-policed, and a lot of schoolkids were vaping and in Melbourne there's a whole underworld war going on with vape/smoke shops being firebombed, so instead of going "hey maybe lets do our jobs better at ensuring this shit's only sold to adults" they just went "nope, total ban". You cannot buy any disposables, and the only liquids and pods/devices are if you get a prescription and buy them from an allowed vendor - they say pharmacies is one but afaict no chemists are selling any. I got a refillable pod device and some unflavoured ejuice from QuitClinics and then started trying DIY flavours using dropper flavour concentrates. Its messy and hit and miss and tbh I a starting to really go off the whole palaver.

Still, it got me off cigs, can't complain there.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 8 September 2024 22:44 (one year ago)

NB the firebombing is also due to tobacco being so heavily taxed here that smokes are, I do not joke, upwards of $60 a pack.
So now the smoke shops all sell black market imports that skipped customs instead. And theyre having turf wars over it. Its like a mini-prohibition thing.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 8 September 2024 22:47 (one year ago)

At my kid's middle school there's a lot of sneaky vaping on campus. Some parents vaping too while waiting in their cars at pickup.

omar little, Sunday, 8 September 2024 23:01 (one year ago)

That's crazy

A friend of mine was in town recently and wanted to buy some tobacco so we went to the corner shop and when he was told the price we both almost fell over. £23 for a pack of golden virginia! I have no idea how the shopkeeper knows which pack is which - no colours or design or logo or even brand name is allowed on the packs at all

xpost yeah vaping seems like a thing with kids pretty much everywhere unsurprisingly

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 8 September 2024 23:19 (one year ago)

less than 20 years ago you could get a big 50g packet of Drum baccy from bloke in local WMC for a fiver. When I was an underage smoker 10 Berkeley Superkings was 67p. Not surprised UK kids are vaping!

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Monday, 9 September 2024 05:10 (one year ago)

Yeah the packs are all plain here now too, with the ugmo cancer faces and rotted feet and all that crap. None of that bothered me - it was the prices that killed it for me, no one can be spending hundreds of dollars a week on smokes. Vapes cost me like $150 for a supply that'd last me 3 months or more (using pods). More so now, as I only vape when drinking and thats now only once a week.
