Really, I'm complaining because the only thing I like about asoiaf is the world building, and the show consistently dispels with that in favor of boobs and rape. What does Stannis' loss imply for the power of R'hllor? I have no faith in D&D to have thought about that at all.

Frederik B I have zero beef with you and I agree that we're missing a lot wrt e.g. the smallfolk in the riverlands that would help to establish the context for the dramatic action in king's landing. I'm personally disappointed the brain trust chose to have jaime fuck off to dorne instead of following his arc from the books, though i can understand their reasoning.

It's just that the specific example you provide in support of your general objection doesn't obtain. It's no more established at this point in the books than in the show, and is in fact ~unknowable~ because the world-historical events required to establish the relative positions of the gods have not yet played out. What's more, it's clear from Melisandre's look on her return to Castle Black that this is in fact one of the worldbuilding questions the showrunners actually ~have~ considered. She expected a neat quid pro quo from her god, and received instead silence or worse. ~What can it mean~?

I don't want to make this thread an inhospitable place for anyone. Just asking for a more apposite illustration of what you feel the runners of a middlebrow melodrama with a lot of fans who just like rooting for favorite characters ~should~ be doing here without turning this into a 7-season drama about the production, distribution and enjoyment of bread?

What does Stannis' loss imply for the power of R'hllor?

Based on what they've shown in the past in terms of Lord of Light magic (trying to separate show logic from book logic), Melisandre sees visions of things, and that Stannis' defeat says less about the power of the lord of light than Melisandre's interpretations of what she sees/interpretation of prophecy?

I haven't watched the episode yet (exams to fail) but wasn't the idea supposed to be that burning whatsherface (I don't know why I can't remember her name) would help melt the snow? And is that not what happened?

It stands to reason that they are nonspecific. Plus the Bolton's have to get shat on at some point visions or no.

What could have sold it better is if they showed that Melisandre had some kind of misgivings about the whole thing but I guess they're happy with her being endlessly inscrutable. I'd imagine most would think her mystique is played out at this point.

My main criticism of the “heroes” in Game of Thrones (and the ASoIaF books) is that, with a few notable exceptions, they are the dumbest people in the story. With that in mind, shout-out to Brienne of Tarth. You had one job: Look for the candle. And you couldn’t even do that.

Kinda curious, are there any other fans of the books out there that are thinking that this might be where they take a step back from the tv show?

I've just finished catching up on the final few episodes and although I don't feel that it was rubbish or a waste of my time or anything (ok, Dorne stuff aside), I'm definitely feeling that a number of things that have happened - Tyrion meeting Danaerys especially, but also Shireen burning, Barristan and Stannis and Myrcella all copping it - which would've been a billion times more enjoyable if I'd waited and actually read them in the next novel (this is assuming these things are gonna happen which like who the fuck knows right now i suppose) than watching them on the show.

idk. I was pretty turned off when I read the interview where the guys talked about spoiling book stuff in the TV show but I didn't really give it a lot more thought at the time. I pretty much watch this show out of habit and because other people do and it's something to talk about, but these final few episodes have had me just starting to realise that I totally do NOT want to ruin what comes next in these books by exposing myself to the occasional important plot point interspersed with their fuckin feeble attempts to fill in the gaps without recourse to Martin's volumes of dialogue and character stuff

which is not to say that Martin's dialogue and character stuff is always 100% stellar material but I'd still argue that there has been a marked fall in quality in those aspects of the show since the tv guys started trying to do it for themselves

well even if book six comes out before season six, you're gonna have to deal with five or so years of the show having been finished and the spoilers being a part of general culture before book seven comes out and presumably wraps things up

clay, I expect we move in different circles but honestly I anticipate no real difficulty in avoiding major GoT spoilers amongst my current group of friends.

Tbh I am not so much bothered by the idea of eg Tyrion meeting dany so much as I have hankered after those scenes since p. early in the books and I suspect that Martin would do a better job of it than the show writers.
