Didn't King Robert have a funeral with the body there?

no

Clay, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:09 (eleven years ago)

yeah i don't know if i agree w/ that at all. i think it's certainly possible that Stannis is dead, but if he is it represents yet another tremendous anti-climax to a narrative that was developed over the course of a number of seasons. xxp

Mordy, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:10 (eleven years ago)

Not saying it was very climactic, just that I don't see them dragging his story out any further. Nothing about Brienne's motivations cues to me that there would be any incentive for her to not kill him.

Evan, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:12 (eleven years ago)

They rushed his downfall which is why it felt like a throwaway imo

Evan, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:14 (eleven years ago)

i don't think it felt rushed, it felt like the appropriately banal and inevitable end to his megalomaniacal crusade

Merdeyeux, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:18 (eleven years ago)

Pretty much every character in this series in thrall to hubris, which is why they inevitably have some horrible fate/setback befall them. I don't see why Stannis would be an exception, particularly after burning his daughter alive.

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Monday, 15 June 2015 21:21 (eleven years ago)

either he ends up having cross country adventures with Sansa and Theon or he's dead -- could go either way, but it is noteworthy that you don't see him die.

What I mean is that he seemed to have his shit together as recently as when he was hanging out at Castle Black. Went downhill very quick after that.

Again persoanlly, I sincerely believe that they'd be somewhat surprised that people are reading into what was probably simply a choice to use a POV angle and nothing more. Occam's Razor kinda stance for me. That's where I'll leave it.

Evan, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:26 (eleven years ago)

At least Jon Snow got to smile at least once before he died: his little joke with Sam, "I'm glad the end of the world is being enjoyed by someone"

Without spoilers, is it just Arya's story that is more advanced in the books? (I've read them all but can't actually remember).

groovypanda, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:29 (eleven years ago)

Robert being dead is quite obviously a thing on account of multiple characters saying and then acting as if he has died. How is this the case with Stannis?

There's every reason to doubt Stannis' death until we see receipts.
xps

Bran's, kinda sorta. Most of the others are caught up or just so different it's hard to say.

Clay, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:32 (eleven years ago)

xpost maybe someone thought that two scenes of major characters bleeding out into the snow was one too many for a single episode

the thing about Robert was a joke guys jeez

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 15 June 2015 21:32 (eleven years ago)

hah sorry misfire. was going to reply "and every decision he's made since leaving has been heinous"

it was pretty clear how bad he fucked up when he army went out to meet the boltons. dude had nobody left following his dumb ass.

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 15 June 2015 21:33 (eleven years ago)

Did the soldiers who deserted Stannis do so because they were disgusted by the burning or just that they knew they'd lose the battle?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:38 (eleven years ago)

I suspect the burning was the issue. I'll miss stannis, he was part of some great scenes. And yeah like his gloomy Michael Gross thing.

nomar, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:45 (eleven years ago)

I liked*

nomar, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:45 (eleven years ago)

The High Sparrow seemed pleased that Cersei wasn't going to admit that her children were Jaime's. What going on there? Does he want Tommen to remain on the throne?

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 15 June 2015 21:47 (eleven years ago)

xp
I assumed they deserted mostly for self-preservation.

nickn, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:49 (eleven years ago)

I think the "torture the watch who missed Bolton's men and then kill them"/"watch me burn my daughter for good luck" 1-2 combo was not the morale booster Stannis thought it would be

Maybe he wants to have a trial because he has other proof.

nickn, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:51 (eleven years ago)

I do like the phrase "self swords"

nickn, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:51 (eleven years ago)

it's sell swords

Number None, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:54 (eleven years ago)

Varys slinking out from the shadows was the episode's highpoint. Tyrion running Mereen, w/Varys and Grey Worm, should be interesting to see.

lol at Daenerys' storyline ending back at square one. I hope she spends the next five seasons slowly rising back to power.

painfully alive in a drugged and dying culture (DavidM), Monday, 15 June 2015 21:59 (eleven years ago)

suspect the dothraki are gonna be impressed with her dragon

lag∞n, Monday, 15 June 2015 22:09 (eleven years ago)

Gwendoline Christie (Brienne) is so fun and charming on the extra interview shows. Only other things I've seen her in are small parts in Terry Gilliam films where I didn't notice her.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 15 June 2015 22:57 (eleven years ago)

Ah yes, sell swords.

nickn, Monday, 15 June 2015 23:01 (eleven years ago)

shell swords

lag∞n, Monday, 15 June 2015 23:05 (eleven years ago)

they're swell swords when they're not being smell swords

nomar, Monday, 15 June 2015 23:11 (eleven years ago)

wish they'd shown the set-up for Jon's death
"That Jon Snow needs taking down a peg or two. I've got a plan..."

"what shall we tell him? There's a white walker here to see him? but like a really hot lady one?"
"nah, just make up some shit about his family"

"and what is it really, again?"
"a plank of wood with 'traitor' scrawled on it"
"brilliant, brilliant. His face when he sees that!"

kinder, Monday, 15 June 2015 23:33 (eleven years ago)

Cersei sells self swords by the narrow seashore

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 00:44 (eleven years ago)

Magical assassins, witchy women, zombie monsters, dragon riders, wanton abuse and sadism, damsels in distress, actual cliffhangers.

Bah.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 03:08 (eleven years ago)

hearty lols at the piece of wood with TRAITOR carved into it

, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 03:22 (eleven years ago)

Yep, in case we didn't get it.

nickn, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 03:44 (eleven years ago)

It did need an arrow pointing to a crudely drawn picture of Jon, though.

nickn, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 03:44 (eleven years ago)

Should have put a mirror there

, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 03:45 (eleven years ago)

With the legend "Do you see?"

nickn, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 03:51 (eleven years ago)

that little murder scene was basically the entire character arc of every dead stark combined and whittled down to one minute.

nomar, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 04:00 (eleven years ago)

its wldve been cool if at the end the wolf came up and started to eat his corpse

lag∞n, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 04:56 (eleven years ago)

Clearly be can't.

I'm finding it hard to load the bits of this thread that i missed since it goes back 5 years. Was looking for the beginning of discussion started last week and its among the 'now skipping x amount of comments' section which is several 1000 long & always loads so you're at the start of it.
Any chance of starting a new thread soon?

Saw the last episode yesterday and all the wrong people are dying.
JUst had to take the 1st book back to the library after only reading 1st 70 pages because it was on request and I'd been reading other things. Must get around to reading whichever volumes this is based on at some point. But my to read list is pretty large.
BUt does Martin have it in for the Starks? are they just too nice for a ruthless power struggle or something?

Stevolende, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 07:47 (eleven years ago)

pretty sure Davos will return next season

With Snow dead and Sam out of the way, Davos is the eyes and ears of the viewer at the Wall, unless they spend a lot more time with Melisandre's character, or one of the random Watch dudes. I really hope he gets more to do.

Given they think John Snow is there, it's possible that Sansa and Theon might try and head to Castle Black, which would be a really bad idea.

For a second I thought that the dragon had taken Dany to Westeros and got all excited, but no, she's still on the wrong side of the sea.
