if deray was the only person on twitter it would still be the best social network

The Reverend, Thursday, 11 June 2015 07:00 (eleven years ago)

I am only 2 degrees of separation from Deray IRL and that makes me inordinately happy

two weeks pass...

Twitter has made my poetry more aphoristic. Formally, it’s a platform ideally suited to the aphorism; in fact aphorisms should be quite a bit less than 140 characters. Further, you can like (or “favorite”) an aphorism even if you disagree, or aren’t sure you agree. “RT ≠ endorsement,” as many Twitter bios attest, but nor does a favorite. Some tweets, of course, aspire to literal, factual truth — those that report on science or the news, for example. But others are more like essays or poems or novels which can’t, fundamentally, be true or not true; it’s a category error.

i clicked through from this tweet and was kind of shocked by the disparity between retweets and people actually doing something to help. i understand that not everyone has money to donate and maybe it's right to be suspicious of people asking for cash on the internet and everything, but i dunno, this sort of thing makes me feel that twitter is mostly just about people fronting:

feargal czukay (NickB), Thursday, 2 July 2015 17:08 (eleven years ago)

should say that i recognise that is much more to that tweet than just asking for assistance obv - injustice, violence and social inequality in a nutshell

feargal czukay (NickB), Thursday, 2 July 2015 17:13 (eleven years ago)

sorry, this was a dumb example to use to make a point about the shittiness of social media

feargal czukay (NickB), Thursday, 2 July 2015 17:23 (eleven years ago)

http://foreignpolicy.com/2015/07/08/fbi-director-for-would-be-terrorists-twitter-is-the-devil-on-their-shoulder/

FBI Director James Comey accused Twitter of being the main conduit for Islamic State recruitment on Wednesday and said the social media site amounted to the “devil on their shoulder” for extremist sympathizers around the world.

“ISIL is reaching out, primarily through Twitter, to about 21,000 English-language followers,” Comey told the Senate Judiciary Committee, using an acronym for the extremist group. “It buzzes in their pocket … a device, almost a devil on their shoulder, all day long saying, ‘Kill, kill, kill, kill.’”

i dunno man, honestly, twitter can be pretty powerfully at drawing you further into whatever passing interests you might have on a daily basis and making your opinions about various issues stronger and more vehement. i can totally see that working the same way if your interests are a little more, ahem, fringe.

There has to be a benefit to morons giving away locations and operational details that outweighs the need to shut them down, surely?

I can't think of any reason Twitter would continue to host known ISIS accounts other than governments not wanting them to switch to WhatsApp.

xp, you're right - it looks like they started doing this properly a few months ago having let them get on with it before then.

is this a glitch or did everyone stop tweeting and delete all the tweets
