Had been thinking about starting again tomorrow. Got a wild hair about it, the stars are aligned, whatever. But the forecast is for 95 degrees. I might go through with it anyway but goddamn.

Killarney Hilton (darraghmac), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 21:17 (eleven years ago)

start off easy, build slowly, you'll get there

irl friend of the geir (NickB), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 21:28 (eleven years ago)

I remember ya but I remember it all

its more that my commute is a particularly nice 7.5km more than I wanted to take up running again but all things considered I'm gonna stick at it while the weathers fine.

spent the last couple of weeks on vacation in ireland. rained every day but weather was perfect for running, so I did a ton of it. capped it off with an epic trail run on the Kerry way between Kenmare and Killarney. Really, really cool and I highly recommend it!

two weeks pass...

it's a year away, but i seem to have just entered this ridiculous race:

feargal czukay (NickB), Thursday, 6 August 2015 05:40 (ten years ago)

it's a single stage event but it does have a 4 day time limit, so plenty of time for dawdling along

feargal czukay (NickB), Thursday, 6 August 2015 05:43 (ten years ago)

A whole year, maybe I should sign up?

I'm at an interesting place with my running. Consistent, but not anywhere close to being competitive. I'm still pacing a local marathon training group on the weekend, we're up to a 15 mile long run. That's been good to get my out the door on Saturday and getting my run over before 9:00 AM. I'm running about 3 other times a week, with at least one, sometimes two speed workouts. Done some hill work and fartleks mainly, haven't really crushed any 200s to 800s recently. So I'm starting to get the feeling that I can ramp up the time and quality of workouts, but don't think I could PR at any distance at this point.

Still some PF pain, but it is about as light as it has been in quite some time.

Jeff, Thursday, 6 August 2015 12:36 (ten years ago)

Holy fuck @ that above race, y'all nuts

10 weeks to marathon the second - doing more cross training this time via exercise classes, which are nice and intense, but seem to have made my weight shoot up (without any change in appearance/how clothes fit etc). Annoying - I'd like to get to a better place w. overall strength but I'd also like to uh weigh less for this.

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Sunday, 9 August 2015 06:31 (ten years ago)

I've had some promising speed workouts in the last month. A couple of 3 mile tempo runs 2 weeks apart:

7/30 - 7:25, 7:32, 7:05
8/10 - 7:19, 7:17, 6:45

And a distance ladder interval run yesterday, 2 min rest between each interval:

0.26 - 1:35 (6:08 pace)
0.52 - 3:21 (6:28)
1.05 - 6:59 (6:40)
0.52 - 3:17 (6:20)
0.27 - 1:28 (5:28)

These were hard, but not miserable. Certainly not as fast as I was a year ago, but maybe I should run a all out 5K as a test. I can't PR, but maybe I could eek out a sub-20 again or at least get close to it.

Jeff, Thursday, 13 August 2015 15:27 (ten years ago)

Another 3 mile tempo last night: 6:52, 6:51, 6:26. Good improvement. I signed up for a 5K in a couple of weeks. Will need to get down to 6:15's to PR. Unlikely, but maybe within the realm of possibility.

i think i moved to colorado and its so fn dry here+altitude that i prob have to start carrying water w me on long runs which is frankly my worst nightmare, whats the least bad water toting system plz dont say that thing that straps a bottle to yr hand ugh im so depressed abt this but i just totally fn bonked due to dehydration something that never happens to me in the humid east

lag∞n, Saturday, 29 August 2015 19:11 (ten years ago)

running midday in this sun may not have been the wisest either tbh but i just felt like it so there

lag∞n, Saturday, 29 August 2015 19:11 (ten years ago)

jason waterfalls (gbx), Saturday, 29 August 2015 19:29 (ten years ago)

lag∞n, Saturday, 29 August 2015 20:22 (ten years ago)

6 weeks to marathon #2 and officially terrified all over again just looking at the fucking route

I seem to have a tendency to strain my right big toe, is this more likely a stride/technique issue or a shoe issue? I really do not need to fuck up my big toe.

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Saturday, 29 August 2015 20:23 (ten years ago)

I hope you win! Or at least do well.

Jeff, Saturday, 29 August 2015 21:02 (ten years ago)

Raced a 5K last night, first one in a year. Wasn't sure of my fitness but I managed 19:47, 13 seconds slower than my PR. Happy with that, glad to keep it under 20.

Jeff, Friday, 11 September 2015 12:51 (ten years ago)

and the feet?

feargal czukay (NickB), Friday, 11 September 2015 12:53 (ten years ago)

Good! It seems to be holding steady, probably the best it has been in awhile. We'll see how I feel after my 18 miler on Saturday.

Jeff, Friday, 11 September 2015 13:27 (ten years ago)

great news! :)

feargal czukay (NickB), Friday, 11 September 2015 13:31 (ten years ago)

Running a decent race again has gotten me playing with training paces/estimated race times again. Using the Daniels formula and my latest 5K pace, I'm taking a look at what percentage I am off of what it believes I should be running in races.

Marathon - 12% slower
Half - 6% slower
10K - 4% slower
8K - 8% slower
5K - even
1 mile - 6% slower

Marathon PR by far my worst, which just burns me. If I could even get within 8%, that would put me sub 3:20.

I need to up my miles. Right now with two quality workouts a week, one easy run and one long run, I'm doing the bare minimum to keep up a decent fitness level. I should be doing at least 2 more days of easy miles.

Jeff, Monday, 14 September 2015 14:54 (ten years ago)

Paced my group for their 20 miler last weekend. Went extremely well, no one got hit by a bike and everyone finished. Felt great myself.

So today I had this crazy idea that I should just run a marathon since I've put in so much marathon training, albeit much slower than I normally would train on my own. There is a nice trail marathon just outside the city here that looks really nice. Soft crushed gravel trail, very few hills, rambling through 26.2 miles of lush forests. It would kill me that I wouldn't be going for a PR, but it might be nice to just do a race that I have no intention of PR'ing. Or I could just call it my trail marathon PR, since I've only done road races.

Ray Chard (NickB), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 16:14 (ten years ago)

Carl would probably have me committed if I signed up to try a 50 at this point...

Jeff, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 16:14 (ten years ago)

they'll have to catch you first

Ray Chard (NickB), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 16:16 (ten years ago)

that looks like a gorgeous trail... I'd do it.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 16:21 (ten years ago)

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 16:45 (ten years ago)

50 miles last week, first time in over 2 years I've done that. Too long. Still undecided on the marathon.

Jeff, Monday, 28 September 2015 14:13 (ten years ago)

Welp, I signed up. Marathon number 5 here I come.

Jeff, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 00:16 (ten years ago)

good luck folks!

lag∞n, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 17:46 (ten years ago)

I ran my first marathon at Loch Ness this weekend in 4 hrs 2 min. Was mildly disappointed to not go under 4 hrs, but mainly pleased to have finished. The furthest I'd ever run in one go was 18 miles. I ran the first half a bit quick, and the last 11 miles were a struggle. Also it was a lot hillier than I expected. Bring on the next one!
