the florence shots are scrumptious

Mordy, Saturday, 6 June 2015 00:14 (eleven years ago)

snails on the hand was maybe the most beautifully nauseating thing I have seen

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 6 June 2015 00:29 (eleven years ago)

i like that the show's aesthetics are similarly nihilistic or amoral as hannibal's - treating blood, death, snails feasting on hands w/ the same lavish attention as champagne, the duomo, a faucet. and those totems that blur the lines - the dante illustrations, the museum-displayed torture items, the upside down rabbit in the meat shop

Mordy, Saturday, 6 June 2015 00:35 (eleven years ago)

oh man that lucifer slide over hannibal's face
no other show on television is as well filmed, no other show is even close

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 6 June 2015 00:45 (eleven years ago)

omg yes the rabbit

so much of the show's aesthetic to food & flesh reminds me of the 17th (?) century Vanitas paintings, skulls and rotting fruit in lush detail

xp otm

slothroprhymes, Saturday, 6 June 2015 01:09 (eleven years ago)

The graphicness of the cooking is a turn off to me. I wish they could manage some subtlety.

calstars, Saturday, 6 June 2015 18:19 (eleven years ago)

O_o. no wai that's the best part! imo

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 6 June 2015 20:52 (eleven years ago)

Yeah big fan of that stuff personally

Spottie, Saturday, 6 June 2015 21:25 (eleven years ago)

LOL subtlety.

not sure if the hide-and-seek scene was necessary but it provided some good dramatic tension

I will be downloading a copy of this episode this weekend due to the fact we had storms in my area and the local television station helpfully had the storm alert banner at the bottom of the screen for the ENTIRE EPISODE

Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 12 June 2015 14:00 (eleven years ago)

is it just me or was that episode even more gruesome than usual? so much squick

also replaying the scenes from last season's finale is some kind of sadistic storytelling

Roz, Friday, 12 June 2015 22:08 (eleven years ago)

I wanted to believe in living Abigail

Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 12 June 2015 23:18 (eleven years ago)

I felt something was up when Will woke up in hospital. Hospital rooms don't look like that!!

tokyo rosemary, Saturday, 13 June 2015 00:00 (eleven years ago)

I missed this because I had some kind of 24 hr stomach bug and there was just no way.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Saturday, 13 June 2015 00:52 (eleven years ago)

wise choice there, this episode was pretty much nightmare fuel from start to finish

Roz, Saturday, 13 June 2015 01:05 (eleven years ago)

I felt something was up when Will woke up in hospital. Hospital rooms don't look like that!!

lol tbf there are never any rooms in Hannibal that look like regular places.

Thought it was weird that the priest looked at Abigail in the church. Though maybe he was looking at Will?

Roz, Saturday, 13 June 2015 01:05 (eleven years ago)

I think he was looking at will talking to himself

the heart-leg-cronenbergian thing: aaaaaaaaauuugggghhhhh

slothroprhymes, Saturday, 13 June 2015 12:39 (eleven years ago)

The priest was looking at Abigail and she was looking back. The brief allusion to Don Giovanni at the end of the episode, the constant talk of God and other worlds, makes it clear that Abigail was really there, but (and this is a wild oversimplification) as an angel or ghost. They seek vengeance, ya know.

the will graham reactions kill me

Okay that is fantastic.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Thursday, 18 June 2015 12:55 (ten years ago)

I just watched the season premiere -- twice, to figure out what was going on. Some of it was intentionally confusing, I think: they only call Dr. Fell "Roman" in the first scene and then they don't explicitly show his death.

There were five time periods and besides the Izzard scenes I initially had a hard time telling between them:
RIP Zachary Quinto
Eddie Izzard eats himself.
In France, Hannibal meets Dimmond and kills Mr. & Mrs. Fell offscreen.
In the US, Bedelia meets Hannibal in her house.
In Italy, Hannibal poses as Fell and kills Dimmond.

Hannibal also kills a curator which isn't seen. I don't know what was up with Bedelia buying stuff and being taped.

I hope they keep this up. Great sound in this episode too.

aaaaablnnn (abanana), Friday, 19 June 2015 14:09 (ten years ago)

Hannibal washing Bedelia's hair was practically an ASMR video.

tokyo rosemary, Saturday, 20 June 2015 00:09 (ten years ago)

it would be interesting to do a re-watch now that this show has gotten so impressionistic and dreamlike and everyone talks to riddles. it was so much more of your standard "dark and gritty" procedural in the beginning (like "this is my design" was the closest anyone got to cryptic dialogue lol).

and i kind of miss the more down-to-earth characters like the two comic relief FBI forensic guys. I still like where Hannibal is going but those two feel like they belong to a totally different show now.

Roz, Saturday, 20 June 2015 01:34 (ten years ago)

*talks IN riddles, though 'to' works just as well for this show

Roz, Saturday, 20 June 2015 01:35 (ten years ago)

yeah i just binge watched the first two seasons in the last month to get caught up, so the contrast with the new episodes is a little jarring. i do get the feeling that the mood so far is not necessarily going to hold for all of season 3 as the plot shifts and picks back up on some threads from last year.

some dude, Saturday, 20 June 2015 04:18 (ten years ago)

does the firefly have its own diegetic derivation or is it it a moth reference from the hannibal multiverse?

given what i said upthread i figure the cannibalism discussion between hannibal and gideon (faux-lecter) not only explicitly is abt hannibal eating gideon but implicitly abt the hannibal show slicing off chunks from the canon and refashioning such in its own way.

slugbuggy, Saturday, 20 June 2015 06:47 (ten years ago)

like it doesn't just replicate, it modifies and recontextualizes whole chunks of lore and makes it tastier.

slugbuggy, Saturday, 20 June 2015 06:51 (ten years ago)

i know this is just fan theory, but i did that schtick abt alana wearing will's shirt after sexing and the macbeth quote about can't undo what is did and the show subsequently did both in altered fashion. it knows we're watching, and wants us to know it knows.

slugbuggy, Saturday, 20 June 2015 06:57 (ten years ago)

hannibal is sort of a dick in that he knows he's a copy. he just thinks he's an improvement on the previous versions.

slugbuggy, Saturday, 20 June 2015 07:32 (ten years ago)

like it doesn't just replicate, it modifies and recontextualizes whole chunks of lore and makes it tastier.

and makes it eat itself. keanu whoa.

slugbuggy, Saturday, 20 June 2015 07:41 (ten years ago)

he knows i'm onto him. my only hope is that i got enough insight to not be eaten, just yet.

slugbuggy, Saturday, 20 June 2015 07:57 (ten years ago)

i don't think i like this show much anymore

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Saturday, 20 June 2015 11:31 (ten years ago)

is it meant to be the idea that it gets all of the high-culture stuff gloriously and camply wrong? i still can't tell, and i'm bored of giving it the benefit of the doubt

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Saturday, 20 June 2015 11:32 (ten years ago)

"i was his TA at cambridge"

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Saturday, 20 June 2015 11:32 (ten years ago)

lol they need a British proofreader apparently

Upright Mammal (mh), Saturday, 20 June 2015 14:19 (ten years ago)

i suspect the other yurpean stuff is equally egregious, though i'd be out of my depth in trying to point out why

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Saturday, 20 June 2015 14:43 (ten years ago)

i mean it's ... i'm not v interested in whether hannibal is GOD or THE DEVIL. i don't think the posh stuff needs to be all that convincing, i guess. i think it's at least somewhat interesting that he's gone from satisfying his superiority over the petit bourgeois to eating the rich

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Saturday, 20 June 2015 14:44 (ten years ago)

idk about european geographical stuff but the art/music/literature references seem apt, I feel like there would be a lot more consistent criticism of them in reviews/online if they were regularly incorrect or off the mark

definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 20 June 2015 14:48 (ten years ago)

the Cambridge thing is def a considerable gaffe tho

definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 20 June 2015 14:50 (ten years ago)

I think what's most interesting about this season thus far is about how it's abandoned realism more than ever before - which is saying something! - in favor of pure dream imagery and logic (or illogic, in certain instances) and psychological/emotional insight

definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 20 June 2015 14:54 (ten years ago)

idk i think for example the human totem on the beach at the end of season one, that episode -- i think what's going on there is not 'realism' -- when the show was doing the beats of the crime procedural it put it to more interesting use in deforming realism than anything this season has managed so far -- i keep thinking of david fincher

Cambridge Poet is also ... like, there's more to it than 'cambridge doesn't have TAs'--he's like a 50-year out-of-date stereotype of what a poet via cambridge would be like. "feel like there would be a lot more consistent criticism of them in reviews/online if they were regularly incorrect or off the mark" -- that would assume a p literate / 'cultured' commentariat for tv that i just don't know if we have

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Saturday, 20 June 2015 15:02 (ten years ago)

haha that is a fair point, a decent amount of critics might not bother to check in the first place.

also see what you're saying re: stuff like the totem killing being more subversive by introducing surreal anarchic imagery into what was at the time at least somewhat close to a classic procedural, as a disruptor. I do really enjoy the nightmarish aspects being the blatant central subject of this season, though.

on a completely unrelated note - anyone getting bertolucci vibes from the visual style? specifically the conformist.

definite parallels between Dany and Rachel Dolezal (slothroprhymes), Saturday, 20 June 2015 15:14 (ten years ago)

Hannibal himself has a certain superfluous cultural knowledge. In that it isn't rooted in anything. It's sort of a pan-continental idea of culture, where you would never guess exactly where he comes from originally. There is no sense of history, it's almost mythological with him. Every painting, every poem, every aria, is just a band-aid over a chasm of evil.

bertolucci schmertolucci, the vibe i am getting watching will graham walk around this abandoned estate is 'mid-90s cd-rom adventure game'
