JAYMC on Jeopardy! TODAY! (SPOILERS Y'ALL)

When I lived and worked in Canada, I was constantly told by my friends and coworkers how little Americans knew about Canada. They would shut up right quick when I asked then to identify anything in the States that wasn't New York, California, Texas, or the location of the first outlet mall over the border.

it's funny how these things really come down to the particular mix of contestants in that particular episode. i was squirming in the audience when that shakespearean art category came up, thinking "damn, why couldn't that have waited til i'm on!" at lunch, nobody agreed with me, but several people, it turned out, had been internally SCREAMING for the canadian cities. such is the luck of jeopardy, w/ final jeopardy only the most dramatic case - - - one person's freebie category is another person's "just gonna put the buzzer down" moment.

(I think I only would have got one of the five questions myself, so I don't know why people are so aghast. They weren't exactly giveaways.)

yeah, i agree. i guessed on all of them, and by luck got three right. i got the moose javian one wrong but in hindsight i feel that one would have been the easiest for canadians probably.

Kate: I think you're probably right in general, but then there are people like me who know way more about the States than my own country. Culture and politics, anyway; I'm not that great on geography with either country.

I got Banff right. I might have got the Montreal Olympics one right, with a few extra seconds tacked on. None of the other three.

I got all but Montreal, but, like you said, with another few seconds tacked on coulda gotten it.

i had this severe osiris/anubis waffle going on and basically i think ODB spoke to me or something. that and some remembered cartoon history of the universe stuff. good category overall though, just the kind of clues i'm glad to see when i'm watching jeopardy.

i had really meant the "general public" thing to be self-deprecating, like us architecture people are such weirdos we care about this esoteric stuff. but tbh i was mostly just caught wrong-footed since this was not one of the pre-cleared anecdote questions i had expected! obviously it's a question one gets asked a lot, but it's also basically unanswerable as probably many of you can relate to from your own fields, mutatis mutandis.

rosenbergs actually came as much from ignorance as anything! felt like the question implied that the people involved got executed, and really couldn't remember enough about sacco and vanzetti to say whether they were executed or whether it would have made sense for there to be another defendant involved.
