don't the thorne goons do a julius caesar on him? like, why would the show forgo the option of a mass stabbing?
― Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 17:46 (eleven years ago)
they do indeed
i can see them forgoing it despite the undoubted shock potential mostly bc they don't spend /that/ much time dealing with crow vs. wildling suspicion compared to what's in the books, like in ADWD it's discussed in every single jon chapter p much, whereas in the show they've had a few ollie scenes, some dumb shit ser alliser says and some grumbling here and there

the kid is this season's chekhov's gun, he's getting screen time for a reason

I wonder if everybody thinks they're the first person to come up with the Ides of Marsh
― tsrobodo, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 18:45 (eleven years ago)
am i right in remembering that for hardhome we never really get a description of the massacre, just like a letter back
and it talks about like 'white walkers in the waters' and possibly white walker fish and whales?
― 龜, Wednesday, 3 June 2015 14:56 (eleven years ago)
Just a letter.
At hardhome with six ships. Wild seas. Blackbird lost with all hands, two Lyseni ships driven aground on Skane, Talon taking water. Very bad here. Wildlings eating their own dead. Dead things in the woods. Braavosi captains will only take women, children on their ships. Witch women call us slavers. Attempt to take Storm Crow defeated, six crew dead, many wildlings. Eight ravens left. Dead things in the water. Send help by land, seas wracked by storms. From Talon, by hand of Maester Harmune

"Dead things in the water." is great
― 龜, Wednesday, 3 June 2015 17:08 (eleven years ago)
sooooooo in the "inside the episode" thing that plays after you watch the episodes on hbo go/now, david benioff said that GRRM told them the shireen death was coming, or at least had been an idea of his - presumably making that the second major instance of the show lapping the books after tyrion being by dany's side
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 8 June 2015 15:03 (eleven years ago)
Revealing that is a bit of a cop out. Kinda feels like he's saying, "I don't like this idea and couldn't think of a better alternative but at the same time I don't want to take the rap for it."
― tsrobodo, Monday, 8 June 2015 15:30 (eleven years ago)
benioff said (paraphrasing) that he thought it worked for the story - that it was the logical hideous end result of stannis falling in thrall to the most extreme version of his religion - but that he hated filming it
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 8 June 2015 15:32 (eleven years ago)
could be at least a partial deflection though
"Well I can't completely throw GRRM under the bus having potentially spoiled a plot point from his unreleased book but I still have to give some indication that this development is anathema to my being."
― tsrobodo, Monday, 8 June 2015 15:34 (eleven years ago)
hahaha, fair
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 8 June 2015 15:35 (eleven years ago)
really enjoyed how the meereen scene was done on a much larger/more interesting scale visually than it is in the books while it's also way less busy in terms of plot - eliminating the tedious "did hizdahr mean to give her poison locusts or didn't he etc. etc." thing, it was much more effective that way.
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:27 (eleven years ago)
that said also reminds me of how there's no strong belwas!
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:28 (eleven years ago)
strong belwas was a pretty good bit player
― a silly gif of awkward larping (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 8 June 2015 19:29 (eleven years ago)
Feel like his presence would have tipped a lot of the Meereen scenes into absurdity but at the same time without him and especially now without Selmy, Dany feels ridiculously exposed.
― tsrobodo, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:35 (eleven years ago)
true and shortly to have only tyrion and big homie daario protecting her what w jorah's incipient death
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:37 (eleven years ago)
Grey Worm was probably supposed to make up the difference but having no stand in with everybody besides fake heartthrob dude gone seems like an easily fixable oversight.
I'm thinking that as they get closer to the end of the books staging scenes and introducing new characters in ways that don't cause confusion or mess with future continuity becomes painfully difficult. It's clear that GRRM puts a lot of thought into the little things so not having a chunky text there as a blueprint for how the details pan out has really shown in how loose the plotting has felt at times.
― tsrobodo, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:56 (eleven years ago)
Boring season, all that I'm looking forward to now is to see if Dany gets the runs.
― Falconetti Pot (Leee), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 04:50 (eleven years ago)
treason to talk about a khaleesi like that.

so next episode is Cersei walk of shame, Sansa/Theon escape into Camp Stannis, and Jon gets stabbed ?
― Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 06:48 (eleven years ago)
that's what i've been assuming, although they haven't really done much to build towards the sansa/theon escape.
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 10:52 (eleven years ago)
brienne will be involved somehow i imagine?
― max, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 13:42 (eleven years ago)
Brienne will eat Theon
― DJP, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 13:44 (eleven years ago)
it's gonna need a lot of set up in the episode one way or another. as far as we are aware brienne is sitting on her hands waiting to see a candle.

future plot Q: can the lord of light bring theon's cock back?

a god who can't or won't regenerate a severed penis isn't worth wasting your time worshipping imo

varys balls being harshly ignored here (is he really done this season?)
― nashwan, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 17:31 (eleven years ago)
I think there's a strong possibility he goes back to king's landing to kill at least one of the two people he kills at the end of ADWD, or at the very least to foment discord in some fashion
― slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 17:34 (eleven years ago)
Now that Shireen is burned what's gonna happen with the Gendry plotline? Is he ever coming back

lol
― resulting post (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 17:48 (eleven years ago)
varys killing kevan would be a bit of an anticlimax if only bc k3v has been on screen for abt 30 seconds in the show as a whole. though with cersei's walk there's a chance they could reintroduce him in the finale and do away with him too.
― Clay, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 19:45 (eleven years ago)
dorne stuff must figure in significantly next season/next book -- otherwise what was the point?
― Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 19:51 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, I kinda wonder as well when I see people disappointed in Dorne this season. What in the books made everyone excited to see Dorne?
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 19:58 (eleven years ago)
dorne is the most significant political player involved in the targaryen restoration effort so i imagine it will have a v central role when dany and the fly in
fuck knows what the deal with the other supposed targ kid will be tho
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 19:59 (eleven years ago)
seemed bigger than it is / more desert-y / more of a 'power' that could contend with King's Landing rather than just a handful of sand snakes and the gout guy
― 龜, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 20:00 (eleven years ago)
the show hasn't had the time or will to establish dorne and doran in the way the books did. even the books sort of took a while to get round to it. the targ plans reveal did a huge amount to make the dorne stuff seem less dumb and inconsequential in the books and that'll eventually happen in the show i expect.
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 20:05 (eleven years ago)
But didn't the tart-plans sorta get eaten by a dragon over in Mereen? Nothing seemed to come from that either...
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 20:08 (eleven years ago)
Targ-plans, stupid auto-correct.
