BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 29 May 2015 20:40 (eleven years ago)

i unfollowed everyone (save my bot, my magazine, and two zombie accounts that i can't unfollow) yesterday.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diYAc7gB-0A

gonna follow a bunch of people back soon but man it's nice being weaned off the constant updates.

maura, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 15:47 (eleven years ago)

it is definitely like the modern day idiot box - you just have to be able to switch it off - everything becomes equally hysterical and irritating. i only really read it at work (less boring than work) with the odd tweet when at home.

opting out of twitter from jump continues to feel like the right call for my life

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 16:10 (eleven years ago)

there are some really good things about it too - it brings me closer to communities of people talking about things i'm interested in - or allows me to discover knowledge on more particular interests, but it is hard to fence off the useful info and stop everything else crashing in

bureau belfast model (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 16:11 (eleven years ago)

just let the cascade wash over you

i love tweets and retweets

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 16:35 (eleven years ago)

just a few months into having a twitter account but i am still finding it a useful networking tool in my field. my unfiltered feed is 60% worthless though, i find it more useful to check in on individuals i like

Mute the 60% that sucks if you don't want to get hit with the guilt of an unfollow

feels great to unfollow

tender is the late-night daypart (schlump), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 17:13 (eleven years ago)

empowering

tender is the late-night daypart (schlump), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 17:13 (eleven years ago)

also if somebody notices it's happens in a kind of neurotic shame-zone dedicated to monitoring one's own popularity & so you know it's hard to really casually mention you noticed

tender is the late-night daypart (schlump), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 17:14 (eleven years ago)

i've had *enough* conversations about unfollowing in my life

always unfollow

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 17:21 (eleven years ago)

shdnt be able to mute ppl u follow imho, its a violation

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 17:22 (eleven years ago)

it is a weird 'have it both ways' and i have never done it on principle. but i guess it helps if there are people you don't want to see who you don't want to deal with with them knowing you unfollowed them, though, unfortunately there is social ugliness on twitter that it can be better not to allow to escalate for some people. especially given how badly Twitter seems to handle issues of stalking, harrassment, etc.

I do time based mutes.

Jeff, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 17:57 (eleven years ago)

Twitter is 110 times better than Facebook since it's all out in the open.

pplains, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 18:08 (eleven years ago)

Imo mute makes a lot of sense for temporary time outs

supreme problematics (D-40), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 18:36 (eleven years ago)

I have followed ppl and unfollowed them if I see they aren't tweeting much/at all - need #content

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 18:36 (eleven years ago)

I don't think I ever unfollow for lack of content. How would I know? I'd never see them tweet.

Now, too much bad content... unfollow immediately

ultimate american sock (mh), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 18:39 (eleven years ago)

i use a tool occasionally to unfollow inactive accounts otherwise i wild be following like ten million

unfollowing but keeping lists, like tv channels, is a thing i've seen a lot of people do

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 20:56 (eleven years ago)

wait you can have ppl on lists but not follow them? mind blown

ultimate american sock (mh), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 23:46 (eleven years ago)

love too RT

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 June 2015 00:12 (eleven years ago)

i follow thousands of people. it's not generally advisable but i like just getting a big mess of voices in my feed and occasionally taking out ones that show themselves to be not worth the trouble.

tender is the late-night daypart (schlump), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 01:49 (eleven years ago)

nah i like most of the people i follow. there's lot of good people on the internet! it's a lot easier to curate your company on twitter than on say (cough cough) ilx.

if deray was the only person on twitter it would still be the best social network

I am only 2 degrees of separation from Deray IRL and that makes me inordinately happy

two weeks pass...

Twitter has made my poetry more aphoristic. Formally, it’s a platform ideally suited to the aphorism; in fact aphorisms should be quite a bit less than 140 characters. Further, you can like (or “favorite”) an aphorism even if you disagree, or aren’t sure you agree. “RT ≠ endorsement,” as many Twitter bios attest, but nor does a favorite. Some tweets, of course, aspire to literal, factual truth — those that report on science or the news, for example. But others are more like essays or poems or novels which can’t, fundamentally, be true or not true; it’s a category error.
