Kokkinakis comes back from two sets to 0 and then 2-5 in the fifth to beat Tomic, which feels like a metaphor for Tomic's career vis-à-vis Younger Australia

Tomic's season hasn't been bad, he just seems to be injured all the time
― groovemaaan, Thursday, 28 May 2015 14:11 (nine years ago) link
for me his game is still more fun to watch than kyrgios' and kokk's
― groovemaaan, Thursday, 28 May 2015 14:12 (nine years ago) link
yeah, but he seems to be settling into a top 50 player kind of role rather than anything bigger.
Coric had a nightmare of a time trying to close out Robredo in that set, he's really going to need to develop his kill shots. When Robredo is the more aggressive one and you can only close out a set because of his UEs...
― lex pretend, Thursday, 28 May 2015 14:41 (nine years ago) link
Bernard Tomic will never make it into the top 10. Never. Been saying this for years.

also if Serena loses to Azarenka and Sharapova ends up facing Azarenka in the final, I'm flying back to Paris and will kill myself on Suzanne Lenglen :(

Watson should be a case study in why demanding counterpunchers and retrievers should PLAY MORE AGGRESSIVELY!!!!1111 should be banned. Everyone always imagines the ideal of a speedy player who can hit winners at will but you often just end up with a tactically confused player who doesn't have the power to dominate with basher tennis and makes a ton of errors instead

Huge five-set win for Coric in the end. He def went for his returns in the final game but Robredo looked gassed

Didn't know this tho:
Jeff Sackmann @tennisabstract 1m1 minute agoSince 2006, only two players have beaten Tommy Robredo in a fifth set: Novak Djokovic and now Borna Coric.

Also, is Mladenovic finally going to happen? I've been waiting SO LONG since seeing her at Hopman Cup hitting clean winners off Andy Murray's serves during mixed doubles and she is just GREAT and LIKEABLE so PLEASE can she make the quarters.

Didn't expect Cornet to come out so tight after using home support so well in R1, but...she was tight against Townsend in R2 last year too. Great to see Mirjana hitting her spots so far, had feared she'd bury herself in errors...
― lex pretend, Friday, 29 May 2015 09:23 (nine years ago) link
lol @ commentators talking about how infamous '90s party girl Iva Majoli, who pretty much wasted her entire post-RG career, is teaching Vekic how to focus on tennis
― lex pretend, Friday, 29 May 2015 09:44 (nine years ago) link
Also, I jinxed Mirjana :(

Mirjana serving for the set again. Nets an easy smash, Cornet openly laughing at her

Cornet was about a million times more demonstrative after winning R2 than Myskina was after winning the final
That serve, for posterity

I only half-watched Federer/Dzumhur but every time I looked at the TV there was some tremendously fun shotmaking happening from both. Fed's BH seemed particularly on song
― lex pretend, Friday, 29 May 2015 13:46 (nine years ago) link
Dzumhur is v little but I hope he sticks around, entertaining player, sorta like the New Rochus
Berdych actually looks great in that outfit

CSN has reached the QF or better of every tournament she's played this year...except the two Slams.
Pennetta has reached the QF or better of 4 of her past 7 Slams - but only six other Tour events in that period.
I guess that "upset" reflected where each woman peaks these days...

― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 30 May 2015 10:13 (nine years ago) link

― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 30 May 2015 10:14 (nine years ago) link
he's clearly incredibly talented
― cerealbar, Saturday, 30 May 2015 10:18 (nine years ago) link
& fun to watch
He's ridiculously talented imo. Obviously he's inconsistent, he's still so young but far ahead of everyone else his age. And he has far more dimensions to his game than someone like Raonic. I don't see how he won't be a multi-Slam champion, and I don't have anywhere near that confidence in any of the other touted kids like Coric, Zverev, Tiafoe etc. He's an arrogant little fuck but I don't find that as objectionable (yet) as I did with Hewitt, it's just a young ppl thing. Players like Murray will always be his kryptonite though
― lex pretend, Saturday, 30 May 2015 10:21 (nine years ago) link
fwiw I see a lot more hunger to win in him than I ever did in Monfils, so despite his wildness and showboating I don't think he's in danger of going down that route
― lex pretend, Saturday, 30 May 2015 10:27 (nine years ago) link
iirc Murray was stringing a lot more section of good-to-great play at around 20/21 but the physical aspect was letting him down.
I suppose its reaction to the hype. He'll win slams - though that's a reflection on the next generation coming through as much as K's talent - but its hilarious seeing this one great one shit shot off the court 'approach' against 'this guy is the future'.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 30 May 2015 10:33 (nine years ago) link
Wait, while I'm stuck without a TV in Stockholm, Petra won in straight sets? I'm just going to not watch her for the rest of the tournament :D :D :D
