He was the main bad guy in Tomorrow Never Dies!

Most of that scene makes sense eventually if you give it enough thought but then you ask yourself why you're working so hard to justify tits on HBO.

I actually didn't get what was happening - the poison kicking in seemed to correspond to her flashing her downstairs to Bronn (or at least the camera was heading that way, and cut to Bronn checking it out).
― Your Ribs are My Ladder, Thursday, 28 May 2015 11:51 (nine years ago) link
Yeah I think we were supposed to infer that he was intoxicated by her boobies at first, before the poison reveal.
― the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 28 May 2015 11:55 (nine years ago) link
i felt this show hasn't been objectifying enough so far so it was good that we had a shot from the actual perspective of the guy checking out boobies for some reason
― Merdeyeux, Thursday, 28 May 2015 12:42 (nine years ago) link
when Bronn started swooning, the first thing that popped into my head was "she must have thighs like what, what, what"
― DJP, Thursday, 28 May 2015 13:09 (nine years ago) link
I assumed / hoped that it was some kind of poison that only kicked in when men became aroused. That would be awesome fun.

i didn't understand that they were all in prison together, but in separate cells. but then i am thick.
― p:s nerds know (dog latin), Thursday, 28 May 2015 13:15 (nine years ago) link
do people generally stick prisoners who've tried to kill each other together in the same cell?
― DJP, Thursday, 28 May 2015 13:20 (nine years ago) link
no, they generally stick them in two contiguous cells, 10 feet away from each other
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 May 2015 13:44 (nine years ago) link
I thought it was pretty obvious that she was purposely getting the poison to take effect quicker by increasing his blood flow. That didn't occur to anyone else here? Or am I wrong in the "that's not how bodies work, dude" category?
― Evan, Thursday, 28 May 2015 14:42 (nine years ago) link
thinking about it cersei's plan was really staggeringly dumb, take our your enemies by encouraging a moral crusade when one of the moral crusaders knows a bunch of your terrible secrets?
― Merdeyeux, Thursday, 28 May 2015 14:46 (nine years ago) link
It would have been really clever for them to have revealed that Lancel was part of the faith militant/sparrow in that scene to both Cercei and the audience. It would have been a more shocking scene and have made more sense for Cersei to have gone through with it, since she wouldn't have prepared for someone she knew intimately to be a part of it.
― Evan, Thursday, 28 May 2015 14:54 (nine years ago) link
yeah but lancel looks so different now, 90% of watchers would be all WTF?
is it the same actor, even?
― p:s nerds know (dog latin), Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:00 (nine years ago) link
cersei figured she could influence him with wealth and power like everyone else she interacts with.

otm
have him reintroduced as a fanatic, in a scene where he says some really off-putting philosophical stuff that makes cercei question herself. basically the scene he was in earlier this season, but without the sparrow reveal.
then BOOM haha backstabbing cousin got you thrown in jail who would've guessed
― nose, Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:07 (nine years ago) link
no the way it was done is better it demonstrates that cercei is bad at scheming and what happens to ppl who are bad at scheming
― lag∞n, Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:08 (nine years ago) link
Yeah but it makes her seem a little TOO bad at scheming. Like, it has basically established her as a complete idiot thanks to the way it was handled.
― Evan, Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:15 (nine years ago) link
She kind of is.
― the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:16 (nine years ago) link
Yeah, I think now that she's left without family to support her, her schemes are faltering and guard is falling.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:19 (nine years ago) link
her problem is more that shes immature vindictive and and impulsive than stupid imo
― lag∞n, Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:19 (nine years ago) link
i mean all of those may add up to a functional stupidity when it comes to governance but she has shown insight in other areas
― lag∞n, Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:20 (nine years ago) link
she is pretty good at tactics and vv bad at strategy
― resulting post (rogermexico.), Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:21 (nine years ago) link
also having cancel show up all dun dun DUH would have been terrible. much better to set it up early, then let us forget, then mind us what was in front of our noses all along.

goddamn autocorrect LANCEL
her alcoholism has m/l eroded the cunning she once possessed in spades, idk its not that shocking

Yeah I was thinking along the same lines as Evan especially given how she kept asking how his arm was. He wouldn't have believed her and taken the antidote if he wasn't already feeling the symptoms.

what is up with the new Thronecast (UK) inside-baseball discussion thing? It used to be okay and now it's massively embarrassing.
― p:s nerds know (dog latin), Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:25 (nine years ago) link
All I'm saying is that it would be plenty foolish of her to give power to the faith militant given her history alone, but to have her do that when she knows Lancel is a key guy there and they have a direct history of incest themselves is maybe just a tad too idiotic for her? Plus revealing Lancel is a sparrow in that scene would have been an exhilarating development and the entire "will this plan backfire for her?" question would have been more up in the air than completely obvious for viewers.
― Evan, Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:31 (nine years ago) link
yes definitely it was obvious the plan wld backfire the whole time which was the point, it may have not come with as stunning of a reveal but it was a better story
― lag∞n, Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:33 (nine years ago) link
it would be some tv 101 scandal shit imo to do it like that
the point is not that its obvious to us, because yeah it more or less is - the point is how not obvious it is to her. because she's built up so much arrogance out of anger and a legacy of familial strife, she can never imagine these things affecting her until they do even with the writing on the wall
― slothroprhymes, Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:34 (nine years ago) link
as for completely obvious tho u cn read the thread and see if ppl thought so lol
― lag∞n, Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:34 (nine years ago) link
Eh, if you say so. I had always felt her stupidity level was just above "drooling" myself.

They changed Cercei's plan from the books, and now it kinda doesn't make sense. Just like they changed Littlefinger's plans into something that doesn't make sense, and the Sand Snakes' plan into something that doesn't make sense, and...

i'm a bit confused as to how long these sparrows have been going for, and how big their number is? Like 5 episodes ago they were just this Jedi-style cult and now they're able to imprison half the royal family...?
― p:s nerds know (dog latin), Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:40 (nine years ago) link
i can't remember the lancel story very well, doing it with your cousin doesn't seem like such a big sin in game of thrones land, but what else can we be sure he knows?

― lag∞n, Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:42 (nine years ago) link
"it would be some tv 101 scandal shit imo to do it like that"
Well to avoid that effect the audience could know he was sparrow before she did.
Long story short, I just felt like the risks were overly blatant, and the show had been doing a good job at keeping things up in the air otherwise (example: parallel scene where Theon/Reek has the candle and approaches the tower. Is he going to do it or not?).
― Evan, Thursday, 28 May 2015 15:44 (nine years ago) link
xxxxxpost I figured Cercei just thought that J.Pryce wouldn't take her down because she was helping him and increasing his power--something that would be true of nearly every other person she's met in her life.

pryce imprisoning cercei seems pretty dumb too. aren't there still plenty of ppl w/ loyalty to the lannisters / on their payroll? i understand that leadership is depleted on top but tommen is still sitting on the iron throne. presumably even ppl who don't like the lannisters might be invested in the idea that a religious cult can't just go around arresting dowager queens.

are we to assume lancel would have told high sparrow james lingk about cersei banging jaime?
that's bound to be worth a few more hail marys.
