i'm wondering how long the high sparrow knew about that.

It seems at this point they're showing us three plausible rulers (Stannis, Dany and Jon) all of whom give something of a damn about the supernatural stuff in their world. The other players are too caught up in power politics

I think high sparrow possibly was waiting to do this. I half expected him to smile at the end, like a sadist but apparently he takes no pleasure in this.

I really thought Sam was going to kill those guys to get some cred, like Jon would have for executing that disobedient coward but it probably wouldn't have worked.

xp he did, but he may well have already known bc I expect lancel confessed most of his sins some time ago before cersei's capture, and was prob looking for the most opportune possible time

in this working theory, lancel prob confessed to the high sparrow months and months ago, and it would be to the sparrow's advantage to wait for cersei to think she had him in his pocket, and then snap the trap - also perhaps he wanted to observe her actions for himself to have an opinion on cersei beyond whatever lancel told him

it's a little confusing with the littlefinger angle but it wouldn't be the first time his intentions dovetailed with someone else's

is this like based on anything that happened in the show, cause usually theyre pretty good about telling you whats going on and they had a scene where littlefinger said he set it up

well, lancel first revealed himself to cersei as a religious fanatic very early on in this season, making ominous statements about "his sins" and forgiveness, and could have been talking to the high sparrow as early as that - but I could also be demonstrably wrong! and the sparrow only just found out solely through littlefinger setting it up

i mean cerseis misdeeds dont really fall under the heading of lancels sins, also everyone knows that cersei is gnarly as hell rumors re incest are public knowledge, lancel is important not as an informant but as a witness, but mostly from a storytelling standpoint it wld be weird to have the plot explicitly explained one way but then have another secret unreferenced plot happening in the background, sort of a tree falls in the forest type of scenario, maybe it happened that way in the books? idk

I figure that when Littlefinger saw Lancel he knew that the religious freaks already had evidence that Tommen was Jaime's son and would eventually move against the Lannisters. So it's a good thing his people picked up Gensry somewhere so that he could come back to Kings Landing and marry Margery
