i've long been an advocate for a less transparent, less accountable system, where people are randomly temp-banned. other posters, thinking the temp ban was due to FPs, scramble to figure out what happened, worrying if they will be next.

i fully support a treeshippian terror to fight off the complacency which has been wrought by the weak democracy of fp, at least for a week.

OTOH we could drop the threshold to 18 and make it can automated permaban and see how it goes

It does add them up, darragh! Nobody's at 51 at the moment. Last one was Racoon Tanuki. We've banned a couple of other posters since then based on an ugly racist joke (Once-ler) or repeated homophobic bullshit that attracted huge waves of flags (Hungry4). We've given out a few temporary thread bans to people who needed to cool out for a minute. But 51 is still the cut-off and no one's there at the moment.

I didn't come up with the number. It's from the annals of ilx history. I'd have to go back and figure that out because I honestly don't remember.

We do check out all the flagged posts though, at least on a somewhat regular basis. And most of the time a post has been flagged because someone is just being annoying. And when the posts do seem like they warrant some attention, we'll discuss it and try to do something about it, but mostly we're pretty hands off. If there's something that needs to be addressed, there's always the moderator request forum or if you don't feel comfortable calling people out in public, you could shoot one of us an email too.

Flag post I thought was for abusive, offensive posters... not just bad posters or annoying posters. like that beanbag guy obviously annoys a great deal of ppl on this board but I can never understand what the hell he's saying and I doubt it's abusive or actually offensive or whatever.

I considered flagging that trailer NV posted for Law Abiding Citizen, because that movie obviously stinks to high heaven.

flag post is a way of providing negative feedback for bad netflix recommendations. how I use it, anyway.

lately I've had trouble determining whether a poster being annoying deserves an FP when that annoyance is focused toward a single poster for a significant duration. Isn't that harassment? I try to not think about it too much and just FP. Seems to take something awful to reach 51, anyway.
