Awful movie (still)

very. i cringed to see that harmony korine is the one celeb who's visited gucci mane in present lately (at least that has made it public).

Nah. Still rules. Enjoyed Harmony's somewhat recent Maron/WTF interview. Might be the first one I've heard from him where he isn't fucked up or fucking around. Surprisingly articulate about art stuff when he wants to be.

the first 20 minutes are fantastic, the rest is boring as hell

I am curious why D-40 hates this (unless I'm missing something upthread), I assume it comes from a place of gucci and riffraff fandom - but if so I think that's kind of missing the point. This is about a fantasy of reappropriation, a Disney Princess daydream about consequence-free "badness", of having the luxury and power to safely indulge in things that are conventionally viewed as dangerous (rappers, drugs, sexual games).

i didn't even really think this movie had a message. it looks really cool though. i would call it art! it's definitely an art movie.

I think there is something to what Shakey says, esp with Franco being the kind of dangerous but safe white "guide" to it all, whereas IIRC it's the scene with actual black people that scares Selena Gomez into going home, and also that's kind of what a lot of white people's relationship to both spring break and mainstream hip-hop is about, having this "safe space" to act out fantasies of hypersexuality and abandon that they associate, via popular culture, with black people.
