Awful movie (still)

very. i cringed to see that harmony korine is the one celeb who's visited gucci mane in present lately (at least that has made it public).

Nah. Still rules. Enjoyed Harmony's somewhat recent Maron/WTF interview. Might be the first one I've heard from him where he isn't fucked up or fucking around. Surprisingly articulate about art stuff when he wants to be.

The Britney Spears piano sequence is the one that's stuck in my head the most a few years after watching it.

when i think about this movie what comes to mind are those hot pink robbers masks probably because they were featured in this video from the summer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ib_1ATfr8wM

I am curious why D-40 hates this (unless I'm missing something upthread), I assume it comes from a place of gucci and riffraff fandom - but if so I think that's kind of missing the point. This is about a fantasy of reappropriation, a Disney Princess daydream about consequence-free "badness", of having the luxury and power to safely indulge in things that are conventionally viewed as dangerous (rappers, drugs, sexual games).
― Οὖτις, Monday, 23 November 2015 18:01 (eight years ago) link
fwiw that fantasy is getting tired and old
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 23 November 2015 18:25 (eight years ago) link
I can't really think of another film that does what this one does but ok
― Οὖτις, Monday, 23 November 2015 18:30 (eight years ago) link
I mean usually when this fantasy is explored its explicitly white males doing the fantasizing - Bulworth, Malibu's Most Wanted, etc. - which is not the same thing.
― Οὖτις, Monday, 23 November 2015 18:31 (eight years ago) link
not necessarily film. post-TRL MTV and pop music culture.

Miley Cyrus

Kesha
tbf 1/4 of the movie is just slow scenes with disembodied voices saying "spring break.... forever"
― μpright mammal (mh), Monday, 23 November 2015 19:18 (eight years ago) link
I'm not sure if you're saying her career is about this or if her music is about it cuz I suspect it's the former, which is def not the same thing
― Οὖτις, Monday, 23 November 2015 20:37 (eight years ago) link
I mean I do think there's a real, qualitative difference between real life and film
― Οὖτις, Monday, 23 November 2015 20:39 (eight years ago) link
you probably only think that bc of a movie you saw
― j., Monday, 23 November 2015 20:41 (eight years ago) link
This movie could've been ghost-directed by Terrence Malick.
― my harp and me (Eazy), Monday, 23 November 2015 20:41 (eight years ago) link
Malick's been hanging over his stuff since Gummo.
― circa1916, Monday, 23 November 2015 20:50 (eight years ago) link
i didn't even really think this movie had a message. it looks really cool though. i would call it art! it's definitely an art movie.
― scott seward, Monday, 23 November 2015 20:54 (eight years ago) link
great movie, D-40 sucks, spring break forever
― on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Monday, 23 November 2015 21:36 (eight years ago) link
his whole style is basically Malick + Herzog
I don't think it has a "message", but it does have a core theme
― Οὖτις, Monday, 23 November 2015 21:38 (eight years ago) link
the theme is spring break
― μpright mammal (mh), Monday, 23 November 2015 21:40 (eight years ago) link
― Mordy, Monday, 23 November 2015 21:46 (eight years ago) link
I think there is something to what Shakey says, esp with Franco being the kind of dangerous but safe white "guide" to it all, whereas IIRC it's the scene with actual black people that scares Selena Gomez into going home, and also that's kind of what a lot of white people's relationship to both spring break and mainstream hip-hop is about, having this "safe space" to act out fantasies of hypersexuality and abandon that they associate, via popular culture, with black people.
