Ooh, Hamilton Yarns do sound like they could be pretty good. Trembling Bells are pretty ace, too, though I always forget to big them up as I prefer Alex & Lavinia's other band, Directing Hand.

I'm not gonna be out and about that much in April, as I've got two horrible huge term papers to force out of my system, and as Brighton is crazy expensive I'm cutting out the big-ticket shows first of all. So no Blackshaw or Billy for me.

I've only been in Brighton six months so far, so am still getting used to it. Have begun to get a handle on who puts on gigs etc now, though. But anyway, I should be off, as I have to get a train away from this place in a couple of hours. Need to ready myself to leave.

emil.y, Friday, 27 March 2009 12:36 (seventeen years ago)

Well hey, let's hook up sometime at something small. Is Vessels any good? Also, if we'd have had the conversation a week ago, then the Bug is tonight if anyone would have been up for that. Gotta stay home and build shelves though. Good luck with the papers.

Matt, did you see that the Field are playinmg at that Loop mini-fest thing?

Dom Cry For Me, Passantino (NickB), Friday, 27 March 2009 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

I really enjoyed Loop last year, I think I prefer Urban festivals in my old age, so I'm planning on it again this time.

A small gig would be good, I've still got the job at The Argus, so you can try contacting me on that email.

emil.y: didn't realise you'd moved to Brighton. I'm Matt who used to go to the early Camber Sands weekenders with people like Dougal and Camilla, but then again I'm not sure how much you remember of them. (^_^)

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 27 March 2009 12:59 (seventeen years ago)

Of course I remember them! Although I have known approximately a billion Matts so I'm not sure if I'm getting the right one for you. Do you have ginger hair?

emil.y, Friday, 27 March 2009 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

Bingo!

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 27 March 2009 13:40 (seventeen years ago)

Since the London show sold out early I'm gonna probably come down for the BPB gig if tickets are still available. St George's church is a charming concert venue having seen several great shows there in recent years.

Should also be down for at least one of the forthcoming OIB-ers in the next month and would be grand to say hello to any ILX-ers if you're around.

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Friday, 27 March 2009 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

Gonna skip BPB, not really a massive fan, so don't really fancy blowing a wodge on that. Actually, the first time I ever saw Will Oldham, he played a free gig in the bar of the old Concorde, just him with a guitar playing AC/DC covers and stuff to a little huddle of people. I tell you, dude's sold out.

Peoples, just flag shit up on this thread and we will meet up one day. Matt, will mail you if I come up with a plan. Seriously thought you were suggesting a meet at the Bingo back there though.

Dom Cry For Me, Passantino (NickB), Friday, 27 March 2009 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

Hey guys. Provided that the Freebutt folks don't get confused again, International Colouring Contest should be resuming a monthly night from this Thursday, and they have kindly said I can come along and play some records with them. Will be mostly playing my collection of wonderfully and willfully incorrect music, but I'll take along some psychedelia and radiophonic stuff too (mainly just to bulk up the vinyl element, as a lot of the oddities I've found through mp3-hopping rather than crate-digging).

Upstairs at the Penthouse, no entry fee, just lounging around drinking some beers and listening to some strange sounds. Anyone?

emil.y, Sunday, 5 April 2009 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

I'm looking at my calendar and Thursday looks kinda blank to me. Can tell you that it's a full moon though...

Dom Cry For Me, Passantino (NickB), Monday, 6 April 2009 08:12 (seventeen years ago)

Gah, okay, apparently the Freebutt *have* got their nights entangled again, so ICC won't be happening this Thursday. But I am still invited to play, so I'll update thread when I know for sure they'll be doing it.

emil.y, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

It seems to be going ahead on Tuesday, if anyone fancies it. I will definitely be going and taking records along, so if the Freebutt have got it wrong again then I will be all sad.

emil.y, Sunday, 19 April 2009 13:05 (seventeen years ago)

go see gayvsyou, they're very entertaining!

the most naturally gifted poster of his generation (cozwn), Sunday, 19 April 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

Gay Against You are playing that night? For some reason I thought they had played last month on a weekend that I was away. Don't know that much by them, but the couple of tracks that I do know, I like.

emil.y, Sunday, 19 April 2009 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

emil.y - sorry I never made it to Das Butt, me so lame.

Loop festival is looking alright-ish:
The Field
Matthew Herbert Big Band
Fever Ray
Telepathe
Zomby
bunch of other stuff too.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 09:15 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to go to Loop, the line-up wasn't incredible last year, but I had a really fun time (albeit, half of it wandering around outside the festival site in pubs - but it’s good to have a anchor). And we discovered Planningtorock who was awesome, so hopefully another surprise will sneak up on us this year. Might just go to the Sturday and Sunday days though.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 29 April 2009 09:33 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.loopbrighton.com/#/looplive/

^^^ the Saturday looks alright, Sunday is not so hot though. Remind me who the Invisible are again?

Enemy Insects (NickB), Friday, 1 May 2009 09:41 (seventeen years ago)

Nick, it's actually a good thing that you didn't come along, as the Butt messed up YET A-BLOODY-GAIN. According to one of the guys who runs the night, they've been in the process of changing management for a few months now, without actually properly doing so, so everything keeps getting changed around and communication is somewhat lacking. I *think* they are going to be given the regular night back, but we shall see if this month's one goes ahead without a hitch. We did still have a really good night in the end, but it consisted of geeking out about records in a pub round the corner instead of playing them at the Freebutt.

I think me and Mister Craig will be going to Loop, as I'd like to see Telepathe and Zomby and a few others.

emil.y, Friday, 1 May 2009 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

If any of youse are around on Thursday it looks like I'm gonna be on the door at the Freebutt (in exchange for a Great Escape ticket) so come and say yo.

If you can overcome your understandable animosity towards the venue, that is. (Also, let me know if there's anything I can do to help you with the above ^^)

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Monday, 11 May 2009 13:20 (seventeen years ago)

Just thought I’d shamelessly plug a new underground techno and house night I’m going to be starting with a friend of mine sharing DJ duties. I’m afraid I can’t offer free entry as we’ll be lucky to cover costs, but it’s only going to be £2 anyway, and it’s open until 4.

Be good to see some of you down there - hopefully if we do OK it will become a monthly thing.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

Thought I’d mention we’ll be playing downstairs, but they also have a more chilled upstairs bar, and an outdoor smoking terrace - which should come into it’s own if the weather is good.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

N1ck, I don't really have any animosity towards Das Butt, it's just been a bit frustrating as I was really excited about having an outlet for that sort of tuneage. Which reminds me, I need to get in contact with that lot again, as I have no idea if/when they're supposed to be playing again.

I really love the design on that glock'n'spiel poster. Will try to make it down to that, but maybe bump this thread again a bit closer to the time?

emil.y, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

Hey nice picture, good luck with the club night Matt! Is that your artwork?

Enemy Insects (NickB), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks! I'm available for commissions if anyone ever needs a poster doing.

I'll probably bump with a downloadable mix of the kind of stuff we'll be playing nearer the time too.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

The picture was very shamefully pinched from GIS though - I am planning on doing something extra to it before I get them printed proper.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Due to lazyiness on our part we didn't pay the deposit on this date before someone else nabbed it - so we've had a venue change to the White Rabbit pub on Kensington Gardens. It's now going to be from 8 until 1, but it will be free! Hurrah! Hope to see some of you down there on June 27!

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 4 June 2009 10:58 (seventeen years ago)

I think I'm going to the Loop Festival this year. (I just have to check it doesn't conflict with my residency.)

If My Body's A Club You're My Disco Ball (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 4 June 2009 11:03 (seventeen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Sorry to bump again, but I’ll be playing tunes this Saturday at the White Rabbit from 8 until 1 - sharing duties with the other Glock’n’Speiler Rob over the evening.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 09:48 (seventeen years ago)

omg I was in Brighton for the first time this week

is a lovely if slightly twee place

the pier feels like a genuine british holiday experience

Guy de & (country matters), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:19 (seventeen years ago)

What's the White Rabbit like on a Saturday? It seems prime location to be a bit rammed and touristy. Will probably nip down for a while at least - was worried I wouldn't recognise you as it's been so long, but 'the ginger dude behind the decks' is probably safe enough not to get you mixed up with anyone else.

LJ - what were you down for? Just fun'n'frolics by the sea?

emil.y, Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

woah how do you grow up in south east london but never go to brighton til you're like 20?

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:27 (seventeen years ago)

A friend at Sussex Uni was having a housewarming, but we got there in the afternoon and so went a-roving. Spot-the-guy-with-a-guitar is the finest of Brighton games. There's an overpriced but very tasty brunch place called Bill's which is basically like a bit of Camden-By-Sea, the whole Whole Foods mother-earth aesthetic truly in force, the shelves all stacked with healthy jars of produce. I say overpriced; their portions are, I must admit, generous.

Blueski, I have no idea. I'm definitely returning before another 22 years are up. Interestingly, I've been to Hastings before. Kent is usually the direction I travel in if we head for the wilds.

Guy de & (country matters), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

having said that i think i only went there once between birth and turning 22 myself

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

Also, how do they fit FOUR different roller-coasters and a Rameses Revenge-style whirler onto the very very end of their pier? Makes no sense.

Guy de & (country matters), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:30 (seventeen years ago)

OH SHIT, Gareth uses "Camden-By-The-Sea" in his opening post!!!!!! I thought of that description independently when sat in Bill's! Gareth, we are of one mind. If it's any consolation, my friend said "more Islington, really"

Guy de & (country matters), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:32 (seventeen years ago)

I was there y'day and today with my brother and some family. BILL'S foodstore was possibly best fryup I've ever had. Also really good Indian the name of which escapes me, v diff type of Indian to the usual...I like Brighton.

Bill's does the best, most healthy looking scrambled eggs. And French toast only bettered in the US. And their fish finger sandwiches are like WOAH. I'm hungry now. For Bill's.

Where was the Indian?

― margaret thatcher sex tape (Upt0eleven), Monday, 15 December 2008 17:43 (6 months ago) Bookmark

looks like everyone has the same Brighton experience lol

although mine involved MAD stone-skimming. Two indie girls came up to us and asked us to teach them how to do it. My demonstration stone, I shit you not, bounced about 15 times. It was a real validation of masculinity. Eventually, one of the girls bounced it once or twice and, satisfied, wandered off, after telling me to come see their friend's screamo band on Saturday

also the drugs thing is OTM, we were meant to play football the next day but my friend's friends, having gathered in their kit, simply sat around smoking weed until we had to go home

Guy de & (country matters), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:38 (seventeen years ago)

i.e. a city of flakes

Guy de & (country matters), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:38 (seventeen years ago)

I still haven't been to Bill's. This thread is making me want to go.

Also, lol at stone-skipping being a validation of masculinity. TWEE.

emil.y, Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:42 (seventeen years ago)

Bill's did the most wondrous orange, lime and papaya crush which seemed to go on forever. Am tempted to revive ILX thread "Are crushes awesome?" just for that tbh

It really felt like some kind of small victory lolz and besides we were in Brighton, ain't being cutesy and kooky the name of the game? Secretly, for me stone-skimming is a brutal and highly competitive affirmation of one's masculine commune with nature but I didn't let it on for fear of scaring everyone.

Guy de & (country matters), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:45 (seventeen years ago)

I heartily encourage all visitors to throw as many stones into the sea as possible. I know there's a sandy beach under that lot somewhere, just waiting to be uncovered.

(Good luck with your gig Matt!)

Enemy Insects (NickB), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:49 (seventeen years ago)

I had begun to write off Bills after they got partly takenover with the aim of becoming a chain, introducing a stealth 10/15% price increase by moving to full table service, and having a couple of full breakfasts there which didn't match their early heights of excellence (It's all I ever get as they can be so good). But we got a free meal voucher so went down about a month ago and it was probably the best I'd ever had there, so maybe they've pulled it back. The juices and smoothies are also pretty decent.

The best breakfast I've had in Brighton was at Sam's of Brighton next to the Hanbury, but that's almost twice as much as Bills again, and miles out of town. Excellent produce perfectly cooked though.

White Rabiit: Not sure what it will be like on Saturday, I think it depends on the day as it does get a fair bit of touristy trade, but I don't think it's likely to be mega busy - especially not after the point Rob starts banging out some wonky techno (^_^)

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

Cheers Nick! Are you coming to loop?

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

Naw, after all my bold talk, I'm pretty much broke as a joke.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

That's a shame, let me know if you see any cheap/free gigs coming up which look interesting

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:25 (seventeen years ago)

Also, how do they fit FOUR different roller-coasters and a Rameses Revenge-style whirler onto the very very end of their pier? Makes no sense.

this is exactly the reason why me and my gf are coming to brighton for a couple of days next month.. She told that when we come to the UK in the summer she wants to see the sea and go on a rollercoster..

Its been about ten years since i last went to brighton, how is it for second hand vinyl shops these days.. any recommendations? (especially places with bargain bins)

Jack Battery-Pack, Friday, 26 June 2009 05:18 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry for not turning up last night - a friend from university turned up in Brighton unexpectedly and dragged me to a party. Now my head is hurting. Got to somehow get myself together and head to the Hobgoblin for Human Hair/Finally Punk/bunch of other stuff.

emil.y, Sunday, 28 June 2009 14:46 (seventeen years ago)

Weird, I think I just saw Emil.y hanging around outside my window smoking a fag. Shoulda thrown some horns at you, except you wouldn't have had a clue who I was. Didn't know you were at Sussex, damn. How was Finally Punk?

Enemy Insects (NickB), Thursday, 2 July 2009 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

No worries Emily, we had a great time, but the sound system wasn't the greatest so it wasn't the best place to listen, or dance, to the music we were playing. Tom's has a pretty decent system though, so all steam ahead for the next one on the 1st of August!

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 2 July 2009 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, make sure you bump the thread!

Finally Punk was awesome - I hadn't actually heard them before I went, but they were just really cool slightly messy pop of the highest order. Even the bands on the bill who I'd not been that impressed by before put on a great show, and an awesome time was had by all. Hooray!

Also, you totally should have thrown horns - it would have cracked me up. Which building were you in? I was outside a few different windows smoking fags today, trying to make sure I'd got stuff sorted for my dissertation meeting.

emil.y, Thursday, 2 July 2009 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

I probably should have addressed the comments separately there, shouldn't I? Multiple use of 'you' is not very clear. I'll never make it in academia. Damn.

emil.y, Thursday, 2 July 2009 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

damn you saw Finally Punk. did they do the song with the squeaky penguin? that was lined up for the next idiotica comp.
