i like the sopranos just fine, shakey, but it has race-related probs that are common among many prestige shows, which obviously is the main prob. never thought of hesh as a minority character but having grown up mostly in north jersey i can confirm that a significant number of the dudes that show portrays would think that. ginsberg for his era & in the WASPy wite advertising world would be as well.

anyway, for all of true d's (many!) problems, race is not one of them re ially. the two most prominent black characters (michael potts and tory kittles) receive top billing alongside mcconaughey, harrelson and monaghan) are A. cops & not particularly stereotypical ones and B. markedly more well-adjusted than the brooding wite leads!

the ideal world would give those two characters their own show, & hopefully the success of stuff like empire and how to get away with murder points toward the right direction for that to happen.

xp i believe it'll be 8 once again

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 9 April 2015 19:52 (eleven years ago)

xp to self: *really.

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 9 April 2015 19:53 (eleven years ago)

this looks as good as an equiv wordless trailer of the first seas would have looked at the time. still pumped.

flopson, Thursday, 9 April 2015 19:55 (eleven years ago)

I don't think anyone was saying the show had a problem with race in season one. When I pointed out the lack of people of color in the teaser i should have included "and it is set in contemporary Los Angeles." That's not what LA looks like. (Tho perhaps it does in the world of ~detectives~)

Clay, Thursday, 9 April 2015 20:01 (eleven years ago)

lag∞n, Thursday, 9 April 2015 20:09 (eleven years ago)

i thought shakey was being a bit reductive w/ the "set stuff in finland" joke, clay your initial statement re: the trailer was p accurate

tbrr as a result of nic pizz's issues w/ writing women or honestly anyone who isn't a brooding wite who has secrets i now feel kind of awful for having defended him on any point, like he devises intriguing noir plots & his lines can sing when they dont clunk (it's basically a tossup as to which will happen) but seems like a not good person otherwise

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 9 April 2015 20:15 (eleven years ago)

remember when he m/l plagiarized a shit ton of lines too man I forgot how much I h8 this guy

Clay, Thursday, 9 April 2015 20:20 (eleven years ago)

iirc max is responsible for your opinion/the meme that pizz is a Bad Person http://morningafter.gawker.com/nic-pizzolatto-is-a-schmuck-and-true-detective-will-suc-1617847916 seems like it was just 'slow day at the office' or something

flopson, Friday, 10 April 2015 00:26 (eleven years ago)

like he seems like a totally normal dude

lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 00:33 (eleven years ago)

xxp I actually don't think he's a plagiarist, that wasn't what I was referring to. more the way he comes off in certain interviews (the infamous "branzino lunch" one and bitching about his critics in a lame way in another

it does not surprise me tho that max read wrote a pisstake article out of boredom/quotas if that is indeed the case, I mean denton has v specific goals for pageview totals it must be stressful sometimes

slothroprhymes, Friday, 10 April 2015 00:37 (eleven years ago)

"not a good person" may have been a strong description

slothroprhymes, Friday, 10 April 2015 00:39 (eleven years ago)

he just seems like a self-serious dbag

call all destroyer, Friday, 10 April 2015 00:42 (eleven years ago)

is being mad at the guy as a guy part of the social justice analyst package or can u get it a la carte

lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 00:44 (eleven years ago)

lol

flopson, Friday, 10 April 2015 00:46 (eleven years ago)

it should be a la carte but if you write for the internets it is prob required for optimal thinkpiece production

slothroprhymes, Friday, 10 April 2015 00:50 (eleven years ago)

he just seems like a self-serious dbag

does he though? the one interview i read he just seemed like a normal guy stoked to be making a tv show

flopson, Friday, 10 April 2015 01:00 (eleven years ago)

i dunno about "dbag" but can you realistically make popular (or even unpopular) entertainment in mass media without having extended periods of being tremendously self-serious? your ideas are being realized at the cost of millions of dollars and thousands of man hours, that's pretty serious.

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Friday, 10 April 2015 01:44 (eleven years ago)

lol i'm not invested in this one way or another but the stuff i've read w/him has not made me think "cool guy" is all i'm saying.

call all destroyer, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:05 (eleven years ago)

His name sounds like a giant pizza haha =]

, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:10 (eleven years ago)

i love pizza

Clay, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:17 (eleven years ago)

i love pizzajitos

rip van wanko, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:23 (eleven years ago)

his statements about his upbringing in Louisiana makes it seem like he comes by his self-seriousness pretty honestly. in any case, he just strikes me as a bit clumsy in managing his media persona. probably didn't occur to him that citing Faulkner etc as an influence is to invite mockery.

ryan, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:27 (eleven years ago)

part of why I was charmed by TD is that its "pretentiousness" (if you want to call it that) seemed so unguarded and earnest in some ways (though he's always careful to ground things in Marty's hilarious reactions to Rust). i guess in that sense it's the opposite of pretentious--these are ideas and feelings he was really invested in!

ryan, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:30 (eleven years ago)

I will always have time for earnest nihilists

, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:34 (eleven years ago)

and I think that's what people are getting at with the "dorm room philosophy" jibes--as if they're made uncomfortable by that earnestness. too bad for them, I guess.

ryan, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:35 (eleven years ago)

xpost: me too!

i know its dumb but i hate it when my illusion of ilx as a sort of sophisticated place is shattered. there is no 'blog quota' and b/c i am an editor i only write things when i want to. 'slow news day'! sheesh. pizzolatto comes across like a schmuck in that thr article and i stand by every word in my post. max out.

would be cool if it was set in like 1970's Helsinki or something

lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 14:25 (eleven years ago)

4real does being a "sort of sophisticated place" mean being hyper-acutely aware of the way in which a web gossip news org (which i enjoy, much love, but c'mon) manages its editorial process and publishing schedule in the day to day. i know y'all are into radical transparency with regards to how and why things are published but for people to be sophisticated do they actually have to _care_?

creaks, whines and trife (s.clover), Friday, 10 April 2015 21:43 (eleven years ago)

I mean pretty much everything Nick P has ever said in public makes him seem like a pretentious douche. That's beyond dispute

Number None, Friday, 10 April 2015 21:53 (eleven years ago)

we should all be very worried...for season two, which isn't set in Louisiana but rather in L.A. Pizzolatto's leather-jacket philosophizing spoken by...Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell? In Los Angeles? A show about two brooding, masculine detectives in Los Angeles. Talk about disruption.

yup. even season 1 abandoned what made it unique and unravelled into cliche, pizzolato doesn't have enough critical distance from the characters he creates. Rust basically transforms into batman around the halfway mark. mcconaughey's ego can't resist the hero worship of the script and what was up to that some convincing method acting disappears for four episodes of A-lister camera posing.

dutch_justice, Saturday, 11 April 2015 06:20 (eleven years ago)

s1 would have been so much more interesting if it was about Rust bringing Marty over to the dark side instead of the watery redemption story it farted out instead.

gr8080, Saturday, 11 April 2015 12:24 (eleven years ago)

goddamnit guy
Max do you still think I'm sophisticated?

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 11 April 2015 18:22 (eleven years ago)

I didn't say anything bad about your blog

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 11 April 2015 18:22 (eleven years ago)
