by that rationale matt weiner and david chase shouldve done the same! weiner has the (legit but convenient) excuse of it being period-accurate, david chase, aaaahhhhhh, eeeehhrrrmmmmm...but whatever.

pizzolato's problems are way more woman-related than anything else. if the show proves me wrong sure i'll eat the attendant crow but i don't expect him to totally witewash socal the way that say, lena dunham witewashes brooklyn.

so did the first season of true detective! we can debate about prominence of role, which yea is a problem but thats a problem of almost all tv, and it won't be rectified anytime soon aside from maybe by empire, and the success of that show is a major step in the right direction.

for the record, whenever black people showed up on the sopranos they were complete and utter stereotypes barring your one example of a rapper with a degree in urban planning in season 1, which was actually interesting. tbf that matched up with the view most of chase's italian north jersey characters had of black ppl, cant speak to chase's own.

as far as mad men goes they are not prominent at all, which again, is period accurate sadly, but pleeeeeaaassse don't even try to say matt weiner is a paragon of diversity representation or progressiveness just because pete campbell said IT'S A SHAMEFUL SHAMEFUL DAY in season 6 during the MLK assassination episode

imo its okay to have a show with only brooding white men like for instance who is more conflicted than a white man nobody i shd know i am one

Would absolutely watch that. (Though, as long as we're ticking boxes, The Shield and most of Mann's movies had lots of prominent minority characters in non-villain/monster roles.)

Marty's series of booty calls was a little one dimensional but the wife character (can't remember her name, lol) was fine until they seemed to not know what to do with her for the final 2 eps. though there's a dignity in her getting away from all that.

yeah mann always had diverse casts & its one of the many reasons why he's kinda the platonic ideal of modern crime filmmaking (still seems to, altho im prob not gonna see blackhat and find out)

I don't really disagree about the portrayal of black people in Sopranos that you lay out, but wasn't aware we were speaking strictly of black people

we weren't. but i can't even recall latino characters having ANY significant roles!

AJ's puerto rican girlfriend, Hesh, arab guys show up for a few episodes (not as a v significant characters tbh), I'm probably forgetting some others

as for Mad Men, I agree they have not given minority characters a lot of time (outside of Ginsberg), but they have made a point (repeatedly) of showing how exclusionary the world of the main characters is - whether it's Roger in blackface, Dawn/Shirley's interactions and experiences, or the Drapers' shitty treatment of Carla

The way they ended S01 makes me think of the whole damn enterprise as a fluke. Will check S02 out tho, obv.

there was the old civil rights/union organizer in Sopranos too (and his son, iirc?) that was a good couple of episodes

i like the sopranos just fine, shakey, but it has race-related probs that are common among many prestige shows, which obviously is the main prob. never thought of hesh as a minority character but having grown up mostly in north jersey i can confirm that a significant number of the dudes that show portrays would think that. ginsberg for his era & in the WASPy wite advertising world would be as well.

anyway, for all of true d's (many!) problems, race is not one of them re ially. the two most prominent black characters (michael potts and tory kittles) receive top billing alongside mcconaughey, harrelson and monaghan) are A. cops & not particularly stereotypical ones and B. markedly more well-adjusted than the brooding wite leads!

the ideal world would give those two characters their own show, & hopefully the success of stuff like empire and how to get away with murder points toward the right direction for that to happen.

I don't think anyone was saying the show had a problem with race in season one. When I pointed out the lack of people of color in the teaser i should have included "and it is set in contemporary Los Angeles." That's not what LA looks like. (Tho perhaps it does in the world of ~detectives~)

i thought shakey was being a bit reductive w/ the "set stuff in finland" joke, clay your initial statement re: the trailer was p accurate

tbrr as a result of nic pizz's issues w/ writing women or honestly anyone who isn't a brooding wite who has secrets i now feel kind of awful for having defended him on any point, like he devises intriguing noir plots & his lines can sing when they dont clunk (it's basically a tossup as to which will happen) but seems like a not good person otherwise
