Oh yeah, I forgot about the ridiculous Sanrio store on Newbury! I've never been in there but it always makes me giggle when I see it.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i just remember it blinding me with tweeness

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i love that store.

kephm, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i love all the stationery with totally garbled english phrases

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

My walkman finally died on the trip up, and I was sooooo tempted to buy the light blue Cinamaroll walkman there, but by some strange force of character, I resisted the impulse.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"somerville v. cambridge"

No contest: Somerville.

nader (nader), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(PS, with the noted Cambridge exceptions of the Kendall Square Cinema, Twisted Village, and Chez Henri (where my wife and I got engaged.)

nader (nader), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, that's so awesome! I keep intending to go to Chez Henri but we haven't gotten around to it yet.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

>>what's the name of that ephemera shop on, uh, harvard ave i guess, in allston?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Cambridge exceptions

Pinocchio's

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

which side of the line is Tacos Lupita on?

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread really has some amazing moments on it:

Dude, getting a kick in the balls is better than Boston, of course Philly is better. I went up there to visit my sister and we could literally see where she was from all points driving but had no discernible way to GET to her because the roads just don't go anywhere but a big circle.

-- Ally (garance8...), December 11th, 2001.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Boston mentality: If you're lost, it's your fault for coming here in the first place.

PS, Don't look for street signs, that money goes to potholes.

nader (nader), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

tacos lupita (salvadoran, mexican • somerville • ***)

13 elm st, somerville, ma, 02143

617-666-0677

(although it's awfully clost to the line, no?)

nader (nader), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

close, close to the line

nader (nader), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that would be... Davis Square, I guess? Maybe Porter?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to Pinochios--these nice boys at the famous ice cream shop recommended i either go there or to some Mexican place.

Why is it never time for you to WALK across the streets in Boston? At every street I came to, traffic was whizzing by, there was never a walk sign, and I had to push the stupid button and wait forever. Then, get 1/3 of the way across the huge street, and start all over again.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I found the areas of Boston where white people live mostly useless, but I enjoyed the Spanish (Hyde Square, Chelsea), Portuguese (East Cambridge), Chinese (Chinatown), Korean (Allston), Vietnamese (Uphams Corner), whatever pan-asian thing the the Porter Exchange is, and most of Roxbury/Dorchester well enough.

Radiowise, the only college stuff I enjoyed much were the Late Risers Club on WMBR (some of the best radio I've ever heard, actually), the goofy classic rock show that comes on after it, and the Greek(?) guy who plays 60's garage rock on WHRB. The Record Hospital was very disappointing, given all the legendary stuff I'd heard about it, but the orgies on WHRB are great. I never found anything interesting on WERS and WZBC.

Kris (aqueduct), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that would be... Davis Square, I guess? Maybe Porter?

Actually, it's Wilson Square (seriously, I'm not making this up). But yeah, down the street a bit from Porter. (Or Portah, if you prefer).

nader (nader), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, wacky Boston and its 8,000,000,000,000 squares.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(yes I know it's really Cambridge and Somerville but humor me here)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Sigh... I remember Davis Square... not surprising since I lived there 3 months ago.

+ Anna's Taqueria (!!!)
+ Diesel Cafe
+ That other really dirty cafe.
+ JP Licks
+ The Burren
------------------
Reasons for Somerville's continued existence.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but there are at least two other locations for Anna's.

Is the other really dirty cafe Someday?

Also, REDBONE'S.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

How could I have forgotten Redbones? And yeah, it was Someday. I used to get rooibos iced tea after work from a cute girl with a full-color Mad Max tattoo on her arm.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I figured there must've been a hundred barbecues in Dorchester better than Redbones, but I never managed to find any. Redbones is fun enough but the food is totally forgettable.

Who are the famous athletes from Boston? The only one I can think of is Marvin Hagler. Did Reggie Lewis grow up in Boston? I know he went to Northeastern.

Boston has the shortest, most inconspicuous MLK Blvd. I've ever seen. Why bother even having one? I also heard something about the Zakim Bridge also being called the Bunker Hill bridge because the Charlestown residents didn't want the bridge to be named for a Jew. Did I read that somewhere on this thread?

Kris (aqueduct), Thursday, 7 October 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, anna's has good rice

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 7 October 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
so, where should i go to watch the world series games on tv?? preferably in cambridge.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 21 October 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ANY WHERE.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

So I'll be near Copley Square Sunday sometime through Tuesday night. Anyone have any commentary on nearby restaurants/hotels? I probably won't have time for local stuff besides food and maybe a loop around the Public Garden, but Boston must-sees? I've been to Cambridge before.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and I'll be there again two weeks subsequent, and maybe will have actual sightseeing time then, so recommendations encouraged

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, tonight I R DA LOSER. laugh in my general direction, no capitalism-tasting & all that.

above all ... ENJOY YERSELVES BOSTONIANS, YOU DESERVE IT!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 28 October 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm so glad i've been here this week.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 28 October 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

well, my viewing was limited - a pre-check-in trip to see a few races at Head of the Charles, and pre- and post-dinner walks around Back Bay, down to Tremont St, and up to Louisburg Sq - but I think I'm with Dan on this one - it's Neither. A real city, yes, moreso than DC. But I can see good reasons why one would want to live in DC rather than NYC, and don't see the same for Boston beyond work with a few institutions. It's nice, but it's too nice. Where's all the grit? Why does everyone look the same?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 28 October 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Toby, did you get caught in all last nights hoopla?

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 28 October 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Where's all the grit?

South station?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Dudley Square?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew I was missing something. I've been through South Station before, but don't remember it.

Maybe it was just a reaction to the planning-gone-bad/mall-in-the-bad-sense of Back Bay (and inappropriate attribution back to the real thing in Beacon Hill, which, admittedly, I saw at night and while distracted by a phone). I did kinda like what I saw of the South End, and Trinity and other churches were interesting.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Trinity is GORGEOUS; my wife and I sang in the choir there for 2 years.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going there next week. So it had better be classic.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG COME TO THE CONCERT AT KING'S CHAPEL SUNDAY EVENING AT 5 PM!!!!!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

is this sunday the 7th or sunday the 31st? I R not in USland on October 31st.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

by the way, what is this concert anyway?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 28 October 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Boo it's the 31st.

The concert is this one. My wife and I are singing in it.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 October 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ah well, I'm sure you'll do fine without me.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 28 October 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

What was the perfect little neighborhood I wandered into after I left the public library en route to Hyatt but accidentally landed in an ubermanicured utopian village--is that Back Bay?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 28 October 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Either Back Bay or The South End, depending on which direction you walked (you don't happen to remember any street names?).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 October 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but then I turned in desperation to get out of the neverending suburbs (the only person around was a postman) and I ended up at Saks.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 28 October 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You were in the South End. It's really gorgeous over there (and probably the area of town I'd most like to move into).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Dirty yuppie. (j/k)

It was really lovely, but almost fairy-tailish. It's super expensive to live there, I presume?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

OH YES. We had friends who lived in a 600 sq ft condo that they paid $350,000 for. 600 SQUARE FEET. If you want a decent amount of living space, you are EASILY looking at $600+K.
