i like twitter essays more stuff shld be written in bullet pt form imo
― flopson, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 16:21 (eleven years ago)
also i really like the thing phil elverum said about twitter, that just the mechanics of reading it mean you can say “Here, think this thought really quick”, can super directly convey something abstract in this really open context, space, people's attention span so wide & then specific. like the language part of it is really lovely, i think, to have access to this fragmentary branch of somebody's thoughts.

what the form really needs is someone really gifted at this genre: A Thread for Posting Brutally Pessimistic Quotes by Anguished Philosophers

are there good examples of good twitter essays or is the thing we're admiring more the being on the ground during the gettysburg address sensation, the temporality of just swimming in live content, something like the flickering cursor live-typing of '00s computer thrillers

Probably the best part about twitter is that when you're feeling sad you can go on and find other people who are also feeling sad but who have thousands or tens of thousands of more followers than you and that makes you feel better because having a lot of twitter followers is supposed to help you feel less sad but for those people it didn't work
― 龜, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 20:22 (eleven years ago)
wish you could turn people down
― Pic Verry (mattresslessness), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 20:28 (eleven years ago)
for what
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 20:34 (eleven years ago)
i just mean halfway between full follow and mute, like having a volume knob for everyone that corresponds to frequency or something
― Pic Verry (mattresslessness), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 20:38 (eleven years ago)
u cld have a thing where for certain ppl u only see their more popular tweets
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 20:39 (eleven years ago)
Yeah that would be a good addition
The other thing twitter needs is to incorporate favstar functionality
― 龜, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 20:41 (eleven years ago)
like facebook does? lol
― mh, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 20:41 (eleven years ago)

Muting retweets and hashtags has made the usability go way up. (Tweetbot does this, don't know about the regular twitter client)

xyzzzz__, let us know yours schlump?
― xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 22:52 (eleven years ago)
followed you!, & i'm filmclubbristol, i am not useful on twitter, just #fyi
& i feel like a judiciously controlled feed is probably in some ways desirable but i don't mind the sprawl, i don't think, feel like the design is compatible with a kind of human scanning frequency learned from personal ads & telephone books, & that in some ways calibrating the frequency or visibility of somebody would just deny me the simple periodic pleasure of unfollowing, something that makes me feel like i'm truly exercising control in my life, being firm, putting a foot down. it's meant to be kind of messy, i think. neil hagery just got more successfully aphoristic on twitter but for a long time he was really into the messy transparent language angle, i don't mind twitter feeling like scanning a radio dial
― tender is the late-night daypart (schlump), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 23:12 (eleven years ago)
It totally is radio dial.
Thanks, followed back - if you all want to know my struggles in watching the world upside down (otherwise known as yoga), random lines of poetry and novels I'm reading (that I then structure into my commentaries on my reading at ILB), live Columbo commentary (Saturdays at around 12pm GMT) and re-tweeting lines from that Finnegans Wake account.
Well, then I'm yer bot.
