Was talking about this with friends on Friday, it's amazing that no PR person ever tells the celebs/pols who visit that Reddit harbors shit waaaaay worse than Stormfront.

The Chive is way weirder than ILX or Reddit - how do you have an online community with no interaction? It's like FAPs centering around Buzzfeed's biggest fans.

I think there are underlying behaviors that are just coming to light that are fostered in these kind of upvoting environments. That race for The Truth and Verification and proving you are a 1 not a 0. I might be interested in a well-done book on this stuff, these weird new laboratories of social anomalies that never would have occurred pre-internet. And of course a lot of this stuff is just pop culture deconstructing itself and things getting more and more derivative and abstract. You have things like MRA, which is a comment on feminism, which is a comment on real things. I am sure in less than a generation there will be iterations on this, a MRA response to a feminist response to original MRA's response to feminism, etc. The new era of instant communication has been difficult for everyone to adjust to but I think it will be good in the long run. Most online arguments could be boiled down to differences in definition, so maybe after a generation or two of this constant communication, anomalies like trolling and performance art and character stunts will seem less and less necessary.

what about flag posts tho

in terms of the overall tenor of reddit, not just the creepshots or redpill fora, is it basically sexist/boorish/chivean/gamergatish

i went on a date with someone who bragged about having made the front page of reddit but wouldn't say what for

in the long term, the definition of defining yourself in definition to etc doesn't matter because no one has that much of an attention span, except for really concentrated types, and their neurosis is much more defining of their character than what they think of gender relations

Most of them are pronounced atheists so that faith has been redirected towards faith in objective measurable truth. Maybe if you spend all your time communicating with people who agree with you (and downvote the ones that don't) then you sort of have less exposure to other points of view and your content curation has narrowed your worldview and hence you are less holistic empathy more efficient ideology.

that's the danger of the internet in general: the balkanization of taste and perspective.

It's not just the gamergates or the atheists or the jailbaits or the fedoras or the Christians discovering the Internet for the first time. It's not just the girls gone wild dressing up like the little mermaid in the back of their drama classroom or the guys who write "Wow. Stunning." after those girls gone wild posts. It's not just the subs that add porn to their name like mapporn. It's not just AMAs with the President of the United States, Will Wheaton or a guy who was an extra in that puppet video.

the thing that differentiates the reddit style in that (pretend) case is that theres an overt pandering hook which is what one wld suspect from a site where popularity is central to the design, which is tbh worse than the ilx version, otherwise they are pretty much identical tho
