Demographics

According to Google Ad Planner's estimate, as of May 2013, the median Reddit user is male (59%), 18–29 years of age, and is connecting from the United States (68%). Pewinternet.org has stated that 6% of all American adult Internet users have used Reddit before.

does reddit provoke anxiety in ilxors because to most people what we do is essentially the same as what goes on over there?

Let me know when Barack Obama does an AMA with 4chan.

Was talking about this with friends on Friday, it's amazing that no PR person ever tells the celebs/pols who visit that Reddit harbors shit waaaaay worse than Stormfront.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 18:07 (eleven years ago)

The Chive is way weirder than ILX or Reddit - how do you have an online community with no interaction? It's like FAPs centering around Buzzfeed's biggest fans.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 18:09 (eleven years ago)

i think u can create yr own posts there then ppl comment, its one of those a blog thats also a platforms

lag∞n, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 18:15 (eleven years ago)

then the popular stuff makes the front page or something, standard web 2.0 bs

lag∞n, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 18:15 (eleven years ago)

i thought they were the same thing until relatively recently, or that one came from the other

I think there are underlying behaviors that are just coming to light that are fostered in these kind of upvoting environments. That race for The Truth and Verification and proving you are a 1 not a 0. I might be interested in a well-done book on this stuff, these weird new laboratories of social anomalies that never would have occurred pre-internet. And of course a lot of this stuff is just pop culture deconstructing itself and things getting more and more derivative and abstract. You have things like MRA, which is a comment on feminism, which is a comment on real things. I am sure in less than a generation there will be iterations on this, a MRA response to a feminist response to original MRA's response to feminism, etc. The new era of instant communication has been difficult for everyone to adjust to but I think it will be good in the long run. Most online arguments could be boiled down to differences in definition, so maybe after a generation or two of this constant communication, anomalies like trolling and performance art and character stunts will seem less and less necessary.

what about flag posts tho

gr8080, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 22:52 (eleven years ago)

in terms of the overall tenor of reddit, not just the creepshots or redpill fora, is it basically sexist/boorish/chivean/gamergatish

primal, intuitive, and relatively unmediated (Treeship), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:24 (eleven years ago)

i went on a date with someone who bragged about having made the front page of reddit but wouldn't say what for

primal, intuitive, and relatively unmediated (Treeship), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:25 (eleven years ago)

the core reddit behavior is performing intelligence imho

lag∞n, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:26 (eleven years ago)

"reasoned debate" "peer reviewed"

lag∞n, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:27 (eleven years ago)

4chan is mostly into transgression

lag∞n, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:28 (eleven years ago)

feel bad saying that person bragged xp

primal, intuitive, and relatively unmediated (Treeship), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:29 (eleven years ago)

that seems like a good distinction. are most reddit users outspoken atheists has this been studied

primal, intuitive, and relatively unmediated (Treeship), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:29 (eleven years ago)

some of my friends use reddit. they are women who say that it's ok in certain subreddits so i guess the sexism must not permeate all corners. i am still to snobby to ever read it

primal, intuitive, and relatively unmediated (Treeship), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:33 (eleven years ago)

not sure what the long post was about but Treesh thought 4chan came from reddit, which isn't true
8chan came from 4chan, though, I think that is what he was thinking of

mh, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 00:43 (eleven years ago)

in the long term, the definition of defining yourself in definition to etc doesn't matter because no one has that much of an attention span, except for really concentrated types, and their neurosis is much more defining of their character than what they think of gender relations

mh, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 00:45 (eleven years ago)

Most of them are pronounced atheists so that faith has been redirected towards faith in objective measurable truth. Maybe if you spend all your time communicating with people who agree with you (and downvote the ones that don't) then you sort of have less exposure to other points of view and your content curation has narrowed your worldview and hence you are less holistic empathy more efficient ideology.

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 25 March 2015 00:52 (eleven years ago)

that's the danger of the internet in general: the balkanization of taste and perspective.

primal, intuitive, and relatively unmediated (Treeship), Wednesday, 25 March 2015 01:02 (eleven years ago)

zinging atheists is fun but "so that faith has been redirected towards faith in objective measurable truth" doesn't make sense unless you conflate two definitions of 'faith'

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 25 March 2015 01:03 (eleven years ago)

mh otm as well. character is more important than ideology, ultimately. if you are a decent person, that can sometimes transcend ignorant views, at least most of the time. if you are a singleminded, humorless ideologue this sucks regardless of how righteous you are.

primal, intuitive, and relatively unmediated (Treeship), Wednesday, 25 March 2015 01:05 (eleven years ago)

totally agree

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 25 March 2015 01:06 (eleven years ago)

there is no such thing in the social sphere as "objective measurable truth" unless you mean claiming people are only worth their ability to produce and then being a giant pissbaby when people don't value the same things as you

mh, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 01:06 (eleven years ago)

the only empathy we have is the ability to relate to people who are unlike ourselves, the rest is back-patting

mh, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 01:07 (eleven years ago)

well if you say "so that faith has been redirected towards faith in 'objective measurable truth'", it makes sense

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 25 March 2015 01:10 (eleven years ago)

objective measurable truth
^^ phrase worthy of stupid copy/pasting thread

mh, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 01:11 (eleven years ago)

It's not just the gamergates or the atheists or the jailbaits or the fedoras or the Christians discovering the Internet for the first time. It's not just the girls gone wild dressing up like the little mermaid in the back of their drama classroom or the guys who write "Wow. Stunning." after those girls gone wild posts. It's not just the subs that add porn to their name like mapporn. It's not just AMAs with the President of the United States, Will Wheaton or a guy who was an extra in that puppet video.

No. Why I'm still on ILX complaining about Reddit is because of shit right here that I saw today:

That namby-pamby passive-aggressive plea for unnecessary sympathy that makes my eyes sink back and my blood run cold.

About 50% of the time when I've made bitcoin jokes on Twitter, some dude has popped up and tried to tip me. With bitcoin.

On our worst day, you won't find anything like that here.

Now, just plain ol' aggressive pleas for sympathy, yeah those are all over the place.

the thing that differentiates the reddit style in that (pretend) case is that theres an overt pandering hook which is what one wld suspect from a site where popularity is central to the design, which is tbh worse than the ilx version, otherwise they are pretty much identical tho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 14:20 (eleven years ago)
