I have a pair of the smartwool and I don't really feel like they are any better - but I know jeff runs a lot farther than me

I have Thorlos because, well, that is what they had at the store the day I bought running socks. They work great, although I am probably paying too much. But then I knew that was going to happen when I bought socks at a running store. They have black ones, though, which is nice... goes with my shoes.

i wear cheap cotton socks
― lag∞n, Sunday, 22 March 2015 05:55 (eleven years ago)
bless your cotton socks
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Sunday, 22 March 2015 06:11 (eleven years ago)
I'm not really fussy about socks at all, I just wear whatever I have on my feet at the time.
― cgi bubka (NickB), Sunday, 22 March 2015 07:33 (eleven years ago)
my feet are super fussy about socks but I've never worked out what the criteria are (can't be too thick, can't be too thin, etc) - basically I find one type of sock that I can run in and keep buying it until it's discontinued, then have a miserable search for another type, and so on

Brighton Marathon today, let's see how well my dodgy leg holds up.
A: It won't
― yeovil knievel (NickB), Sunday, 12 April 2015 06:17 (eleven years ago)
My IT band held up in the end - I am amazed by this! From about halfway onwards I was expecting it to go south at any minute but weirdly I didn't even feel a twinge. I smashed into the wall though: my calves slowly turned to concrete in the second half of the race, and at about 22 miles it felt like someone had dropped an anvil on me - I don't think I've ever found it quite as hard to move forwards before. Am putting that down to not drinking and eating enough in an attempt to avoid any stomach issues - probably a dumb move because it was actually quite a warm day, and I totally collapsed after finishing through lack of sugar and dehydration. I knew had a coke in my kit bag at the finish, but I couldn't find my bag at all after about 15 minutes of searching with mounting hysteria, so I just sat down in the street and wept like a baby for about a minute. It was really sad :(
Anyhow, 3:21 in the end. I didn't really do any specific training for the event - no speedwork or steady tempo stuff, have mostly been doing slow easy miles to try and avoid aggravating my injury, so I'm fairly happy with that. Mostly I'm relieved to get it over and done with, it really really hurt. Think I'll go back to trotting through woods with a backpack full of sandwiches for the rest of this year.

Winner got round in 2:10:15 which is just fucking nuts, it's not like this is one of the world's major races at all
― yeovil knievel (NickB), Monday, 13 April 2015 13:47 (eleven years ago)
thats a very fast man
― lag∞n, Monday, 13 April 2015 14:27 (eleven years ago)
so that's about a 7:30/mile pace... wow! congrats! I'm currently planning to spend the summer training in an attempt to run a 5k at that pace in the fall, hahaha.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 13 April 2015 15:20 (eleven years ago)
Boston Marathon today. Exciting, but sad because I would like to qualify one day and I don't see it happening until I'm way up in age groups. Out of reach right now (3:10 lol).
I did run 4 times last week, 19 miles. PF still hurts some, but not enough to make me stop again. No speed work at this point, just trying to get my general fitness back. I just wish I could string together several years of injury free running, I would be awesome.
― Jeff, Monday, 20 April 2015 14:43 (eleven years ago)
I did sign up for a 5K this weekend. But I'm going to do it with the stroller so I'm not disappointed with myself not being anywhere near PR shape. But it will certainly be a stroller PR.
― Jeff, Monday, 20 April 2015 16:13 (eleven years ago)
Hope there's not too many tight bends on the course!
― yeovil knievel (NickB), Monday, 20 April 2015 16:32 (eleven years ago)

Amen to this btw. Consistency is key but it sure as shit eludes me.
― yeovil knievel (NickB), Monday, 20 April 2015 16:33 (eleven years ago)
running with the stroller seems problematic not being able to swing one arm/have natural form, hows it feel
― lag∞n, Monday, 20 April 2015 16:33 (eleven years ago)
It definitely takes getting used to. Easier if you run just holding on with one hand, but harder to turn. I think I can probably break 25-26 min, depending on how much traffic I face.
― Jeff, Monday, 20 April 2015 19:34 (eleven years ago)
25:37ish 5k pushing a stroller. Waaaaay too crowded. Could have easily gone faster on a more open course.
― Jeff, Sunday, 26 April 2015 14:21 (eleven years ago)
i have run 14.39 miles in april lol
― computer champion (harbl), Sunday, 26 April 2015 14:25 (eleven years ago)
april's not done yet harbl!
jeff - that is a decent buggy time imo, though i guess we should spare a thought for the people you had to mow down to achieve it, god rest their souls. dare i ask how the foot is?
― yeovil knievel (NickB), Sunday, 26 April 2015 14:29 (eleven years ago)
Foot hurt before and after, but not during. We'll call that a victory.
― Jeff, Sunday, 26 April 2015 16:23 (eleven years ago)
lol this marathon is in a month I am so fucked
― fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Sunday, 26 April 2015 17:33 (eleven years ago)
Nah, you'll be fine! Barring some sort of terrible injury, if you want to complete it, you will. The main thing after that is just starting off at a pace that won't kill you too quickly and then just accepting whatever comes your way, be it pain or discomfort or joy or whatever. Your fitness will be what it is; the rest all comes down to the decisions you make on the day - and you will be in control of those - so don't sweat it too much now. But good luck this month, and whatever happens, just make sure you don't do any crazy last-minute panic training.
― yeovil knievel (NickB), Monday, 27 April 2015 12:54 (eleven years ago)
Good advice.
― Jeff, Monday, 27 April 2015 13:29 (eleven years ago)
That IS excellent advice! Which I am just literally now reading for the first time, having just completed this somewhat crazy last-minute panic run:

― fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Sunday, 3 May 2015 05:50 (eleven years ago)
Befpre this my longest run was a half, which I last did 2.5 weeks ago, so this was probably not super wise. But I feel OK! I did have to break into a locked water fountain on my way home out of desperation, though.
― fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Sunday, 3 May 2015 05:52 (eleven years ago)
i ran 17.39 miles in all of april but i also went to the gym several times. i'm conflicted. i've already done 3 miles in may though. garmin says i burned 2,288 calories but it doesn't have my weight right. i should change that so it says i burn more.
― computer champion (harbl), Sunday, 3 May 2015 14:19 (eleven years ago)
Ran 10 miles yesterday and felt pretty good. My first double digit mileage run in SIX MONTHS. I was shocked when I realized that, the last time was my half marathon back in November. What the fuck happened??? Oh yeah, my stupid foot. Anyway, I think things are looking up?
― Jeff, Sunday, 3 May 2015 14:28 (eleven years ago)
glad to hear that jeff! :)
just got back from doing the 3 forts marathon, which is a local trail race on quite hilly terrain. did it last year and it beat me up, so i ran it a bit more conservatively this time round and then pushed harder for the last 8 or 9 miles - nice to finish feeling fairly strong for once. horrible cold, wet and windy weather though, still feel frozen to the bone. am doing another 100 miler in two weeks, so that was my last long training run for that. have been keeping it under my hat a bit cos i didn't know which way my ITB issue was going to go, but i seem to be out of the woods on that now. didn't give me any big problems today - major relief!

one wierd trick to qualify for boston

warm night running is p nice :)
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 12 May 2015 03:31 (eleven years ago)
surprised a boston qualifier race would only have timing mats at the start and the finish, but then I have no idea what is normal... although every race I've been in has at least had a halfway point timing mat, and most have had more than that. if some spectator set up a video camera at the course and left it running the entire time, that would be pretty conclusive. and these days not particularly unusual!

i bust my toe playing beach volleyball last night, oops. not sure it's broken but it is very big and purple. only a middle toe though so at least it's not one of the important ones. going to be some interesting types of pain in store for me this weekend...

ha that looks awesome! how many people sign up for something like that?
― tobo73, Thursday, 14 May 2015 12:23 (eleven years ago)
last year there were 41 starters (and only 12 finishers, uh oh). about the same number entered the 50 mile version, but that had a lot more finishers: http://beyondmarathon.com/apocalypse-100/results/
this is one of the more low key 100 milers in the uk though. the centurion series get bout 200-250 runners in their events, so you're more likely to be running with other people around you. also way more expensive though, they're kind of cashing in on their popularity
― yeovil knievel (NickB), Thursday, 14 May 2015 12:51 (eleven years ago)
sorry that was wonky typing
― yeovil knievel (NickB), Thursday, 14 May 2015 12:52 (eleven years ago)
That looks like a miserable race. I'm not sure I could make 10 miles with that elevation profile. Flatlander4lyfe.
Since I'm not really racing these days, I signed up to be a pace leader for a half marathon training program. I'll be leading 9 minute milers every Saturday morning on their long runs. Since I run most of my long runs 8:15ish pace, hopefully that should be an easy conversational pace for me.
― Jeff, Thursday, 14 May 2015 13:48 (eleven years ago)
oh that will be great! helping people out is the best thing in sport, seriously. will still be good training for you too of course
