there's an "opera mini" as well as an "opera mobile" -- the former uses a free proxy for webpage reduction (if you trust it) and so can run speedier and on less powerful phones.

oh this thread said everyhting i said over on the other thread

to recap:

-nokia have best menu logic
-nokia stoped making decent phones
-clamshells are horrible
-all phones look horrible (lol apart frmo RAZR)
-silver phones, chrome whatever DIE DIE DIE stop it please for the love of god just make them black. why should black be some weird more expensive ltd edition idiosyncrasty rather than standard!??!!?

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Why do people hate clamshells? I like that they protect the phone and save you from having to lock the keypad?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Still the most usable phone I've had (oh how I loved that scrollwheel thing):

Alba (Alba), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Laura lost her RAZR last night.

Sterling, I am retrying installing Opera Mini now and it looks like it works if I do it over GPRS rather than pushing over Bluetooth. YAY!

Anyway this article has a good CHEAP phone profiled.

R.I.P. West Village Bird Shaman ]-`: (ex machina), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:46 (twenty years ago)

er i dunno. i just hate them for some reason. i dont like the idea that opening the phone answers it automatically, but i cant remember why i think that. ive been drinking a lot recently

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:47 (twenty years ago)

oh god, it is a J2ME app ... so fucking slow... the interface is WORSE than Doris also. No contextual menus :(

R.I.P. West Village Bird Shaman ]-`: (ex machina), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Ambrose, it is hard to find a black phone in a crypt of a handbag. Clamshells and slideys = war with crumbs at some point. Much as I like it, that lovely onyx black tends to get gubbins on it too. Silver phones that look and feel like a smaller version of a TV remote are COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. I loved those deep, rich red Nokias that everyone had circa 2000. Presently, that only leaves the chrome, which matches other choices (I don't wear gold, ever).

suzy (suzy), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:51 (twenty years ago)

i appreciate that i dont suffer the handbag problem, as i am actively pursuing testicular cancer/low sperm count by having my phone dangling aroudn my crothc in my jeans pocket

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

has anyone removed and painted a faceplate?

R.I.P. West Village Bird Shaman ]-`: (ex machina), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:56 (twenty years ago)

this was my old phone nokia 8310
http://www.wijkman.nl/gsm/i1643996-54.jpg

worked really well for the past 3 years which is part of the reason why i never bothered to upgrade. it was just so easy to do everything with one hand (which you can't really do so easily with any clamshell ones). i can't quite wrap my thumb far enough i think to text one handed on the RAZR (in case i want to have a wank whilst i text)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

actually it's not the width mainly but because it's all flat, so i have to really make sure i get the right button and can't do it by feel as well. also. i have to work out a way to hold it so that i don't get fingerprints all over the little screen at the front.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

it was just so easy to do everything with one hand (which you can't really do so easily with any clamshell ones).

Ah yes - that makes sense.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Motorola have had consistantly awful user interfaces all through their lives. Early razrs didn't have t9 which is shocking in this day and age.

Ed (dali), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Why is T9 called T9? It's not a very catchy name. Is there some company called T9 making loads of money and hating prawns and collieries?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Ah ha.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

yes, well they aren't called T9, I forget the name, but they get a fee for every phone with it installed.

Ed (dali), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

so anyway what should i use as my mp3 ringtone? currently i have beyonce's "check up on it" but i don't like so much.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:22 (twenty years ago)

i've been on "pon de replay" for months now and i love it.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

You boys.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

i can't do mp3 ringtones on my phone so i'm limited to what T-Mobile offers me, and it's the best one i've found. what i really want is a man's voice barking "hey! hey! hey! hey!"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:40 (twenty years ago)

You're not limited to what T-Mobile offer you, though. You should be able to download midi files from anywhere (or mmf files or something, if you have a funny phone)

Alba (Alba), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:43 (twenty years ago)

i'll admit i haven't looked into it very hard.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:46 (twenty years ago)

the best ringtone is justus kohncke "elan (dub)"

the nokia 8310 is the best phone i think in terms of looks, use etc. why do they always get rid of the good stuff and replace it with crud

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:46 (twenty years ago)

mine has a bit where you can take the back picture off and insert your own. i used this picture i took of i-787

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

You would.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 27 March 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I lost my RAZR last night. All the drunken nights it managed to stay safe, and I lost it at a movie. After many phone calls, it appears unlikely to be recovered. I just spent a bunch of money I don't have to spend on a Samsung t309 that I don't like very much and now I don't have a RAZR. :(((

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 27 March 2006 17:15 (twenty years ago)

This is why we shouldn't buy nice things. See: my iPod

R.I.P. West Village Bird Shaman ]-`: (ex machina), Monday, 27 March 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

I think my pocket might have been picked. Even if it wasn't, no one will give it back.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 27 March 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Yea, and if you could get yr SIM card back you wouldn't be locked into ANOTHER 2 YEARS. Fcukers

R.I.P. West Village Bird Shaman ]-`: (ex machina), Monday, 27 March 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

happy w/ my razr and can operate it quite easily w/ one hand

RJG (RJG), Monday, 27 March 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I want a RAZR for the following reasons:

-Works w/ Cingular
-Has a camera
-Bluetooth (works grebt with iSync)

Either that or the Motorola V551, which seems sturdier.

I'm not a real fan of flip-phones, but these cheapo free-with-the-plan Nokias keep on sucking.

naus (Robert T), Monday, 27 March 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

ALL THOSE REASONS = DOZENS OF OTHER PHONES BRO; JUST BUY A GSM PHONE OR WHATEVER CINGULAR USES AND POP YR SIM CARD IN

DONE

R.I.P. West Village Bird Shaman ]-`: (ex machina), Monday, 27 March 2006 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Yea, and if you could get yr SIM card back you wouldn't be locked into ANOTHER 2 YEARS. Fcukers

You can get replacement SIM cards from your carrier. They'll charge you a fee, I think around $20.

mikef (mfleming), Monday, 27 March 2006 23:49 (twenty years ago)

i had a polyphonic "get busy" on my last phone and i really liked that. thinking to stick to dancehall maybe and add some electroish oldschool hiphop stuff. i should really get cracking on this tonight when i get home from work. important quality of life issue here.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:15 (twenty years ago)

mine now plays the music of when you get the invincibility in super mario bros.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

i have verizon and we don't have SIM cards (or at least, no phone I've ever had with them has had one). what determines whether or not you have a SIM card? Carrier or phone?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Carrier; I think only GSM carriers have them?

Houdini Gordonii (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

you are right. how annoying.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm cell-phone illiterate, so here's a question: is it possible to custom-create one's own ringtone? There's a bit from Topography of the Lungs that I'd like to have my next phone splat at me.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Some phones have ringtone creators on them. It's rather fiddly.

With others, you could make a midi file or mp3 file (depending on what your handset can play) on a computer and then transfer it to your phone either by USB cable or by hosting it somewhere on the web and then pointing the WAP or other browser on your phone at it. If you have such things.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

I use a wav file I bluetoothed as mine

Houdini Gordonii (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
ok dudes, i dropped the razr in the toilet, and im not really all that sorry.

i need a new verizon-capable phone. id like to pay $150 or less (on ebay), but suggest irrespective of price - is anyone super-pumped about their phones? i hated the razr because it was too wide, the button response was poor, the camera had no flash, and it was really vulnerable to water damage (i got a replacement once, when one drop got into it and it blew up). any ideas?

69, Monday, 30 April 2007 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

Hurrah, I finally got round to replacing my razr! D

on't think you'd be interested in my replacement though, it's quite bulky, though it does have a flash, it's a sony ericsson K800i. I learnt my lesson, the only concession I made to looks is that I got the brown one!

Vicky, Monday, 30 April 2007 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

pete my phone was free from verizon. it's fine.

hahahah suckers

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Monday, 30 April 2007 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

I have a Razr. I got it free and it's adequate but has some irritations. That said, i only switch it on about twice a week. I hate phones.

admrl, Monday, 30 April 2007 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

I like my RAZR, apart from the camera having no flash. Although it take me a while to get used to the texting and searching processes.
