My experiences going to gay bars as a straight guy is that it's by and large totally chill. That being said, if gay dudes were to resent my presence there in some big way (which has never happened, as far as I can tell), then I would be inclined to not argue and respect their wishes to have a space where they don't have to deal with the "straight" world during their leisure time...esp. if they happen to live somewhere that is less receptive to gay culture overall. Everyone deserves some kind of sanctuary from bullshit.
― dell, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 23:07 (sixteen years ago) link
going to gay bars is usually pretty fun, except i got dragged to some weird warehouse called the eagle once where there were dudes in leather chaps and masks and i heard some dude say "eew, women" -- I WAS OUTTA THERE PRETTY QUICKLIKE

We only do this if you're ugly.

Maybe it has something to do with patrons' ages? My most extensive experience in a gay bar involved going there with an ex-girlfriend, in part b/c oftentimes the environment there seemed less annoying somehow than other local "straight" places. I wouldn't classify her as a "fag hag", whatever that means, in any sense, but the guys there always treated her awesomely.
― dell, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 23:16 (sixteen years ago) link
Oh, the part I forgot to post is that the patrons of this particular place were largely middle-aged.
i think it's a good bet that if any bar has the word "eagle" in the title it's a leather daddy bar

some gay/lesbian bars are fun (in SF I dig the Eagle and El Rio and used to enjoy Kimo's). Some I have no interest in but always chuckle at their "risque" names (the Men's Room, the Midnight Sun, Look Daddy's Coming, Moby Dick, etc.)

I think it depends on the situation. There are bars I don't tend to want to go to: lesbian pick-up bars where I feel distinctly unappreciated on a Saturday, say, or gay pick-up bars where I end up having to fend off lots of inquiries without looking like I'm a rubbernecker or otherwise causing offense, but that's often more a function of the day and time than the bar itself and if I'm there with a bunch of gay friends, I figure I'm a 'guest' and I don't care if anybody takes offense. I also think that it depends on your behavior. I don't get grossed out by dudes kissing on the dance floor or talking dirty or checking people out or hitting on me, for that matter, if there not louts about it, or going off to do drugs together or whatever, so I don't feel that I'm sullying anybody's sanctuary.

There's a place near me called The Dick Liquor. Sadly it's nothing to do with the gays.
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 23:27 (sixteen years ago) link
Kimo's is gay?! I played there once and didn't notice. Or get laid.
I have arguably never been to a gay bar in Portland, but I'm told I'm not missing much. Still that might give you a sense of my take on this "issue", if you couldn't already guess.
― Casuistry, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 23:35 (sixteen years ago) link
Kimo's is old skool gay for sure. I don't go there, however, as the owner is a completely creepy pervy voyeur who has a security camera system that's wired TO HIS HOME where he can keep an eye on the bar's patrons 24/7. I am not kidding.

My impression of Kimo's was that it was more of a sort of transexual bar or something? But maybe I'm confabulating it with other Polk St. institutions.

I just wish that Hemlock Tavern had opened up under the old-school Giraffe name. That signage rules.

we used to dance at the gay/lesbian bar quite a bit... it's a better place to go to dance and not be bothered imho. but this was like a dance club in a lot of ways.
i guess my question might be... the bar, is the sole purpose hooking up? or can a person just be getting a drink and being out around people?
kimo's and hemlock i mostly just know for some of the more nutty rock/art shows i've seen. (which ain't sayin too much probably... never did get to see extreme elvis do his thing. nice guy tho.) m.

How do they regulate it? Is there a gay breath test or something?
― Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 06:44 (sixteen years ago) link
Yes. Does your breath smell like cock? Then you're in.
― Casuistry, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 06:45 (sixteen years ago) link
I've never felt unwelcome in gaybars/night clubs. Should I be?
The one I've been to most (quite a famous establishment in Brisbane) has mirrors behind all the urinals so everything's on show. Is this common?
― W4LTER, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 07:02 (sixteen years ago) link
I've heard of that one, so probably not.
I'm going to Melbourne's big gay street parade on Sunday. Will take cock breath spray just in case.
