Either that interview will be amazingly great, or amazingly painful.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:27 (eleven years ago)

yeah - it really could go either way. it will be great if he reads her book (which is good and has plenty of family and relationship stuff for Maron to get armchair shrinky about) and it will be horrible if he asks a bunch of dad questions about rock music.

Brio2, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:36 (eleven years ago)

it's funny though - lots of disdain in that book for men in their 50's with peter pan syndromes - but she'll probably go easy on him

Brio2, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:40 (eleven years ago)

i guess the other horrible option is that he spends the whole episode clumsily flirting with her D:

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:54 (eleven years ago)

he'll spend the entire time making her grapple with what listening to Goo meant to him.

I dont think hes that big a Sonic Youth fan iirc

tayto fan (Michael B), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 22:09 (eleven years ago)

that's even worse though, he'll spout off about how much he "just didn't get it"

I dont think hes that big a Sonic Youth fan iirc

I still have an mp3 of the interview he did with Thurston on his post-Morning Sedition radio show from around the time Rather Ripped came out and before Air America completely collapsed.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 22:20 (eleven years ago)

awkward flirting AND asking her to explain her music

clumsy flirting + tube amp talk, then they end up dating and sonic youth reforms as a boogie band with maron instead of thurston

(as if he didn't think a long time about exactly this scenario)

Brio2, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 22:52 (eleven years ago)

lol

ha Maron's "age appropriate" girlfriend was 14 years younger than KG

That Thurston Moore interview isn't as bad as I was expecting. The 70s NY rock scene talk is interesting at least. But yeah, you can tell he's not a fan. "My Bloody Valentine or whatever the kids are playing!" in 2008 is prime Maron and he's at his most ridiculously jurassic when talking about Noise bands with him.

tayto fan (Michael B), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 23:12 (eleven years ago)

How many times has Maron dropped Fred Frith's name at this point? Seems to be his go-to reference (along with The Residents and Eno) whenever more "out" music comes up.

spastic heritage, Thursday, 26 February 2015 02:43 (eleven years ago)

He's only just now really exploring more music, so I'll cut him some slack for having a limited frame of reference nine years ago.

Holy shit, I just realized that Rather Ripped is nine years old!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 February 2015 02:52 (eleven years ago)

I was going to say, he's been posting some really decent stuff that he's been getting into lately. Seems to be a big Ty Segall fan, but who can blame him?

ƋППṍӮɨ∏ğڵșěᶉᶇдM℮ (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 26 February 2015 05:40 (eleven years ago)

Ty Segall is the guy telling him what to buy

He's been hanging out at Gimme Gimme records in LA, even "dj'd" the opening of their expanded store recently. I wouldn't be surprised if the clerks there are contributing to his education.

dan selzer, Thursday, 26 February 2015 13:25 (eleven years ago)

God I love hearing maron fans talk about a middle aged hipster like he's a 12 year old who wandered into a record store.

da croupier, Thursday, 26 February 2015 14:55 (eleven years ago)

"Maron if you like rage you gotta check out funkadelic..."

*maron nods excitedly, eager to earn the approval of these cool adults twenty years younger than him*

da croupier, Thursday, 26 February 2015 14:58 (eleven years ago)

by "maron fans" do you mean "maron"?

Brio2, Thursday, 26 February 2015 15:03 (eleven years ago)

I'm sure he qualifies as one

da croupier, Thursday, 26 February 2015 15:04 (eleven years ago)

ha yeah and he loves talking about his record store adventures, big bit about buying beefheart in his netflix special

he's coming here and it's $69 for the cheapest ticket!

Brio2, Thursday, 26 February 2015 15:05 (eleven years ago)

yeah in fairness to him, he does concede that he had no time for music at all for a good few years. so i guess you could cut him some slack for that.

tayto fan (Michael B), Thursday, 26 February 2015 15:11 (eleven years ago)

Are there any episodes of this podcast that are actually funny? Almost every episode I've heard is two comedians sitting down and almost pointedly not being funny. I appreciate the serious discussions sometimes, but I generally I find so little entertainment value here. Even that famed two-hour Louis C.K. interview barely had a joke in it.

Evan R, Thursday, 26 February 2015 15:53 (eleven years ago)

It is not a "comedy" podcast in that sense. Thank god.

It is frequently lousy, and absolutely wonderful.

sean gramophone, Thursday, 26 February 2015 15:56 (eleven years ago)

yeah i dont listen to it for (or expect) laughs

tayto fan (Michael B), Thursday, 26 February 2015 16:02 (eleven years ago)

I'm not expecting like obnoxious bits or morning radio shtick of whatever. I guess I just assumed that people who are funny on stage might occasionally also say something witty or entertaining over the course of an hour-long conversation.

Evan R, Thursday, 26 February 2015 16:10 (eleven years ago)

the live episodes are usually more like that.

polyphonic, Thursday, 26 February 2015 16:13 (eleven years ago)

God I love hearing maron fans talk about a middle aged hipster like he's a 12 year old who wandered into a record store.

he sounds like a 12 year old hipster who wandered into a record store when he talks about records.

dan selzer, Thursday, 26 February 2015 16:18 (eleven years ago)

I'm the first to razz WTF but people say witty and entertaining stuff on the show all the time. It's not people doing "bits" and jokes but it's frequently very funny. And there's no shortage of podcasts if you want to hear comedians doing comedy.

Brio2, Thursday, 26 February 2015 17:03 (eleven years ago)

otm, I'm glad WTF is a place for comedians to talk without doing their bits. You can catch those on every Earwolf podcast ever or in a hundred other places.

ƋППṍӮɨ∏ğڵșěᶉᶇдM℮ (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 26 February 2015 17:27 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, again, nobody wants to hear bits. What are some recent examples of entertaining/funny discussions though? I enjoyed the Jonathan Katz episode, because that guy can turn every line into a quip, but on most the other eps I've heard the mood is so dry and heavy it's like jokes would be inappropriate

Evan R, Thursday, 26 February 2015 18:33 (eleven years ago)

On a related note, can anyone recommend a few episodes of Getting Doug With High where comedians go in-depth about their depression and/or suicide attempts? The tone of that show is so disappointingly frivolous.

Ad Strawmanem (Old Lunch), Thursday, 26 February 2015 18:42 (eleven years ago)

You want people to talk about their depression or suicide while they're high?

polyphonic, Thursday, 26 February 2015 18:46 (eleven years ago)

can anyone recommend a podcast where the goal is not to be funny, but you know, if a few belly laughs should come out of it, they aren't going to like, stop it from happening?

Are there any episodes of Car Talk where they only talk about paintings.

polyphonic, Thursday, 26 February 2015 18:54 (eleven years ago)

xp but do carolla and rose really delve into topics?

you can buy your hair if it won't grow (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 26 February 2015 18:55 (eleven years ago)

afaict there is only one topic discussed on Corolla's show: the work ethic of non-white people

ancient texts, things that can't be pre-dated (President Keyes), Thursday, 26 February 2015 19:33 (eleven years ago)

I though the Paula Poundstone episode was funny, it's not particularly recent, it is on youtube though

Stupid BUT Tall Guy (soref), Thursday, 26 February 2015 19:41 (eleven years ago)

in addition to the live episodes, i usually find the confrontational episodes pretty funny (like the recent one with Jason Nash. the Jeff Garlin one was pretty good in this way too.).

lil urbane (Jordan), Thursday, 26 February 2015 19:43 (eleven years ago)

xp to PK: I guess that could swing either way, but I'll assume the worse in Corolla bc I am definitely not listening to his podcast

you can buy your hair if it won't grow (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 26 February 2015 19:46 (eleven years ago)

xp I think Garlin is done after that Ben Tench ep, and it's probably a good thing. Garlin's podcast had the greatest dynamic range of anything I listened to. You could get 'The Chris Farley Show' version of Garlin on any episode.

you can buy your hair if it won't grow (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 26 February 2015 19:48 (eleven years ago)

i meant Garlin's WTF episode, but yeah.

lil urbane (Jordan), Thursday, 26 February 2015 19:51 (eleven years ago)

ah, yeah. the bit in the beginning was good.
