I got a 2nd coffee grinder for beans and retired the old one to spice-only duty, but even when I was using one grinder for both, it wasn't that hard to clean. (Keep some cheap rice on hand and grind to a fine powder when you want to switch between spices and coffee, dump it out and wipe the grinder out real good with a dry paper towel. Almost no flavor carry-over.)

That might work and all, but I'd still be real pissed if someone dumped a bunch of spices in my coffee grinder

yeah everyone says you positively cannot use coffee grinders for spices, you just can't, no amt of cleaning will fix it

Nah, dog, blade grinder dedicated to spices. Cheaper than a good mortar and pestle anyway.

no no I meant you can't use a dedicated coffee-grinder-that-you-use-for-coffee-beans; everything I've been told says to get a second blade coffee grinder.

Disagree but stumptown is good too.

Finally got beans - had to crank my Vario to the finest setting after getting giant (80-90g) 'shots.' This one came out ~20g so I'll have to dial it back.
Glad I had my scales for baking, eyeballing it wasn't working.

Since no one seems to know... it looks like maybe it's meant to hold a cone coffee filter. Not sure it would work for that purpose though.

one month passes...

Everywhere I go, it's like cold pressed coffee this, cold pressed coffee that. On Facebook, in magazines, everywhere. So today when I was at the store buying shrimp I got a bottle of Stumptown cold pressed coffee. I was going to save it for another day, but when I got home the new issue of Imbibe in the mail had this big article on cold pressed coffee, so I took that as a sign and drank my cold pressed coffee. And you know what? Fuck that noise. It tasted like my usual coffee does when I put ice cubes in my carafe leftovers at the end of the day and make it cold. A bottle of that stuff cost me $3.99, a bag of good beans costs me $11. Screw you, cold pressed coffee.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 30 June 2015 03:19 (eleven years ago)

i never had bottled cold brew, but cold brew from cafés that are nerdy about cold brew, & cold brew you make at home just by making cafetiere coffee w/cold water & without plunging it, in the evening before you go to bed, are both real pleasures of life imo, & have a sweeter/softer taste than hot coffee/hot coffee made iced

See, I make a pretty simple but really great cup of coffee, Chemex and (right now) Bridgeport beans. My summer routine is usually a couple of cups in the morning, then in the afternoon I fill a glass with the still-warm remnants of the carafe, add some cubes and a dash of milk, and it's great, too. Never have a problem with acidity or whatever issue some say cold brewing circumvents. The Stumptown cold brew I had out of curiosity was really not noticeably different, and for nearly $4 per 12 oz. I was expecting something more ... illuminating. And don't get me started on the cold brews jammed with sugar and cream, because then we're getting into dessert territory.

I am curious about claims that cold brew coffee somehow limits or lowers the caffeine, because that could make it more pleasing past 4pm or so, my usual coffee cut-off. But I don't know how one measures those claims.
