the ridiculous thing is that HIMYM has pretty much had its best average ratings ever this season, and Big Bang Theory's ratings are only slightly better.

but BBT is tied to the moneymaker.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

i know...you made good points, i'm just saying it's silly for all those conditions to give two shows with similar performance such different chances of renewal.

kid cutty (some dude), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

yeah Gukbe's prob right about it being budget issues and the Lorre connection (they should cut Charlie Sheen's paycheck though - dude rakes in 800k per ep, holy shit).

Roz, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

i mean it's no million-dollar Friends paychecks but then again 2 1/2 men is nowhere close to being as big as Friends was at its peak.

god i cant think of a better and easier job than being a sitcom actor

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

really CBS's whole monday night is solid right now and i feel like they'd be screwing up a good thing by messing with it at all...Rules Of Engagement is corny, but i'm a massive Warburton stan so I can at least watch it, whereas I turned off the TV and ran away whenever Worst Week came on.

kid cutty (some dude), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

the fact that HIMYM has increased its ratings so much despite being a highly serialized show is impressive, and you would hope that they would realize that means they have a growing (and fairly rabid) fanbase. I don't think it's going anywhere. They don't generally announce this stuff until April or May anyway.

still bitter about Models Inc. after all these years

I still want to know what was going to happen to Carrie Ann Moss's character.

Event Horizon (Nicole), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

so the season ends and... hey, ted never met the mother!

i don't think tv networks really care about this sort of thing at all

In shows that don't make it past a pilot or first season sure, but in shows that has, as Gukbe nicely puts it, a fairly rabid growing fan base, and quite a bit invested in it (namely Segel who's star keeps growing etc.) I think pissing a lot of people off by just ignoring the premise of the show would be a bit ridiculous. But I guess yeah, they might not care at all.

xpost don't forget obsessive whedon fans - apparently a lot jumped on the show after NPH's turn as Dr. Horrible, if they weren't already watching it for Alyson Hannigan.

rabid fanbases don't count for much though if the ratings don't match (RIP arrested development, veronica mars et al) but luckily in HIMYM's case, they do.

Roz, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

never underestimate network execs:

A scene directly relating to the identity of the mother, involving Ted's future children, was filmed near the beginning of season two for the show's eventual series finale.[5]

my money's still on wendy the waitress.

there's a big metaphor going on in which pussy is medicine (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

wasn't the execs idea though. it was the creators' - they were scared that the kids would grow up too quickly before they could end the show. they've also said that if they had to, they've got no problem going the full 8 years before revealing who the mother was. xp

Roz, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

do people really care who the mother is?
i don't.

mizzell, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

i never even think about it.

that would be such a cheat considering that the narrator (lol @ ted turning into bob saget) refers to "your aunt robin" when talking to the kids like 1000000x

meat of beef (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

i don't really care who the mother is at this moment but i think having that mystery is one of the things that make the show so much fun - like the sandwiches ep where we see Lily, Marshall and Ted smoke up in the future and ted idly wondering where his wife was.

Roz, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

Ted would not marry a woman that's into the Old King Clancy.

Event Horizon (Nicole), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

considering how much the writers are into subverting expectations and putting odd twists on plots, i feel like it's not giving them very much credit to say "it'll be robin duh".

kid cutty (some dude), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

ya... its gonna be robin, tho

Not only does he refer to her as Aunt Robin, I think he actually says at the end of the first episode, "That was NOT your mother."

ted ends up with robin but, and this is the twist part, the kids aren't ted and robin's, they're just these two other kids.

s.clover, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i can totally see the narrator turning out the be barney

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

nah it's barney's kids and the narrator is their uncle ted. and how he met their mother.

Roz, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

ted is their dad, but maybe he divorced their mother and married their aunt robin. that's as far as i go.

meat of beef (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

but doesn't the narrator sometimesrefer to "uncle barney?"

i'm hardly a fanatic (HIMYM runs a distant third to 30 Rock & the office in my sit com rating system. tbh, they're the only three on the list), but the fact that this is dangerously close to being canceled and Big Bang Theory & 2.5 Men are "hits" pretty much sums up everything wrong about America

now is the time to winterize your manscape (will), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

I'm just glad to get American imports at the moment. Big Bang Theory is still pretty much better than any English comedy right now, unless Two Pints suddenly figured out how to be great or something.

there's a big metaphor going on in which pussy is medicine (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

i wouldn't say i hate them. hell, i usually watch them without protest. even so...

now is the time to winterize your manscape (will), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

I think someone theorized it way earlier in the thread, but I like the theory that Ted marries Robin in his 40s or something, maybe after the kids' mother dies or leaves. Robin can't be the mother of his kids but there's got be a reason why the whole series starts with and focuses on her.

Oh that Alan Thicke.

Roz, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 08:01 (seventeen years ago)

I missed the opening gag - I see it must have had something to do with peanut butter - so did a debate over these two foodstuffs send Lily away for four weeks?

Robin looking SOOOOO pregnant, oh man.. Episode overall was a little disappointing, they should get rid of Ted and not let Barney ever say "Wait For It!" again.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

barney told ted & marshall a dirty joke, they told him not to tell it to lily because it's "boy funny", he told it and "we didn't see lily for four weeks".

pretty lame episode imo, i only really liked how flippantly they got rid of lily and "a hot guy telling you when you can and can't pee? that's the dream!"

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

it felt like most of the jokes were broad/dumb in a different (worse) way than they usually are.
