Ever been on a run and craved something savory like...pizza?!? Next time, why not take a slice of pizza with you?
― let me be your fan taytay (NickB), Thursday, 5 February 2015 22:20 (eleven years ago)
dear lord
― Simon H., Thursday, 5 February 2015 22:32 (eleven years ago)
I saw that the other day. Want to try.
― Jeff, Thursday, 5 February 2015 22:37 (eleven years ago)
Want sort of foul beast would ever crave squeezy pizza halfway through a run?
Xp oh right
― let me be your fan taytay (NickB), Thursday, 5 February 2015 22:48 (eleven years ago)
hahaha
I don't think I have ever craved anything but water during a run, and I feel very unpleasant if I eat anything closer than like 2.5 hrs beforehand
― Simon H., Thursday, 5 February 2015 23:00 (eleven years ago)
I have craved food on a long run but at that stage I am also craving just stopping and lying down on the comfy concrete, if I act on it there's no way I can continue.

I missed this news - Matthew McConaughey's going to be starring in a movie version of Born To Run:

I have the hoka clifton's. I like them, even though I'm not running anymore. I like having a spectrum of shoes. Kinveras are my most minimal, then I have Cortana, Ride, and then the Cliftons.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 18:08 (eleven years ago)
This is a change I've made recently, usually I would just have like 4 pairs of kinvaras. But then again, I'm not running now, so who knows if it was for the better.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 18:09 (eleven years ago)
why r u not running jeff
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 18:11 (eleven years ago)
PF and lack of time mainly. Looking to start again in the spring
― Jeff, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 18:14 (eleven years ago)
damn that sore foot, r u doing any other exercise
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 18:15 (eleven years ago)
Hey that dude is running on the Boardwalk in Austin! That's where I run! I am going to knock him over and steal his shoes.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 17 February 2015 19:16 (eleven years ago)
am i right in thinking that hokas are zero drop shoes ie the heel is at the same height as the forefoot, so they're more akin to minimalist shoes than you might think? is it possible that the switch to those has triggered your pf jeff? pf is the one common running injury i haven't had the bad luck to experience, thank god. talking to other people i know that have had it, it sounds hugely frustrating.

― lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 19:50 (eleven years ago)
PF came long before the Hokas, by at least a year and a half. Two years in the making!
It actually feels pretty good now, my everyday walking around no longer hurts. But I figured I might as well go for total rest while it is single degree temps outside and pick it up again in March when hopefully I'm totally healed.
No doing any current exercises right now. Focusing on weight loss, trying to get back to my arbitrarily selected racing weight. Much easier when I'm not running a lot to not eat a lot. I'm for sure losing fitness, but I'll get it back slowly once I start up again.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 19:55 (eleven years ago)
two years of it? eeek! :(
― let me be your fan taytay (NickB), Tuesday, 17 February 2015 20:25 (eleven years ago)
Y'all got any good sock recs? Lets talk socks.
― Flow-through nonresident pass-through entity (los blue jeans), Tuesday, 17 February 2015 20:49 (eleven years ago)
when I worked at a bookstore a ton of my co-workers suffered from PF... it sucks.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 17 February 2015 21:58 (eleven years ago)
Socks? Bought a new pair of shoes last week (eye-opener: try one size above your regular shoesize. omg they feel so comfortable!) and I was given a pair of x-socks when I was trying out shoes. Got the pair with the shoes. Have been using Falke running socks until now, but I'll probably switch to x-socks when the Falkes are worn.
I also got a Garmin Forerunner 220 watch from my gf. Love it, GPS is more accurate than on Runkeeper/iPhone, though it takes a bit too long to pick up the satellite signal when I go for a run...
Days are getting long enough again to run after work. Ran at dusk yesterday, fields full of birds and hares, love this time of year.
― willem, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 13:01 (eleven years ago)
Socks. Smartwool all the time.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 13:43 (eleven years ago)
Hey Jeff, it's March - hope you've recovered and are ready to roll again.
― willem, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 13:52 (eleven years ago)
Still on the DL, but looking to run for the first time in a month on Saturday. Basically a little test to see how things are coming along.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 14:09 (eleven years ago)
I have never even thought about my sock choice, nor noticed a difference?
This is week 9 (of 20) of marathon training and morale is quite low. The notion of doing the weekly long runs on the treadmill has been filling me with a dread I can't adequately describe. I really need winter to fuck off soon.
― Simon H., Wednesday, 4 March 2015 15:59 (eleven years ago)
OK, it got warm enough for my liking so I went for my first outside run today. Man, 2.5 months of treadmill must have really altered my body's concept of running because my speed and stamina went waaay down. Thankfully still have another 2.5 months to correct this...
― Simon H., Sunday, 8 March 2015 20:45 (eleven years ago)
shredded 10miles @ 9min/mile yesterday felt good man
― rational_skull_collector_69 (lag∞n), Sunday, 8 March 2015 20:51 (eleven years ago)
^^ good work. first warmish weather run today, t-shirt and shorts for the first time this year, albeit through melting snow and slush. felt great!

have had some weird ITB issue for the last month. it's mostly been fine, but on my last few long runs i've been hit by this sudden crippling pain in my left knee after about 2 hours of running. twice i've barely been able to walk more than a few steps further without stopping, and i've had to phone my wife to come and rescue me. weird thing is that the pain goes after an hour or so, and i can run the next day without any issues whatsoever. got a marathon next month, so it's been a bit frustrating. anyhow, i figure it's some sort of muscle imbalance thing, so i've started doing some leg strengthening stuff at home - bought one of those resistance bands etc. time will tell...
― we reward the hake (NickB), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 13:59 (eleven years ago)
this is weird too - they've been using my face on a bunch of publicity stuff for the brighton marathon. would be okay with it if i didn't look quite so knackered in the photo:

maybe i'm just stressed cos i'm about to be overtaken by bon iver
― we reward the hake (NickB), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 14:04 (eleven years ago)
Does the pain feel like a knife being stabbed into the side of your knee? If so that's classic ITBS. It sucks.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 14:10 (eleven years ago)
exactly that pain, and completely impossible to run through it
― we reward the hake (NickB), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 14:12 (eleven years ago)
I had it in 2010, I talk about it many times in this thread. I stiff leg walked 8 miles of a half marathon with it. Not sure what eventually got me over it. That strap seemed to help, but it was probably just the passage of time. Some people with say hip strength something something.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 14:45 (eleven years ago)
I stiff leg walked 8 miles of a half marathon with it
that is big effort in hindsight. not just battling through the pain, but just plodding on for so long when the sensible thing to do is to just quit, so serious kudos for that.
am doing this hip strengthening exercise where you have to flap yr leg out like a bird? dog? thing. don't know if it's working or not but it isn't making it worse so
― we reward the hake (NickB), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:06 (eleven years ago)
sounds similar to something i had a couple of years ago - what was weird is that i'd have to limp home from my run but within an hour or so i couldn't even feel a twinge while walking. and yet it recurred every time i ran. ended up just taking a month or so off running, it hasn't come back since except once, mercifully briefly.
ong so happy, today i didn't have to wear my winter running top or want to die of cold during my run, thought the day would never arrive
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:37 (eleven years ago)
yeah it's been a beautiful few days for running here too, shorts weather already
― we reward the hake (NickB), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 17:41 (eleven years ago)
xp back a couple of weeks, I was just wondering if anyone had anyone had any like super incredible socks that they swear by. I feel like all the tight fitting synthetic fiber based socks are basically the same, at least on my 20 - 30 minute jogs
― Flow-through nonresident pass-through entity (los blue jeans), Saturday, 21 March 2015 23:31 (eleven years ago)
I have a pair of the smartwool and I don't really feel like they are any better - but I know jeff runs a lot farther than me
― Flow-through nonresident pass-through entity (los blue jeans), Saturday, 21 March 2015 23:32 (eleven years ago)
i like smartwool also feetures. dumb name.
― computer champion (harbl), Sunday, 22 March 2015 00:17 (eleven years ago)
I have Thorlos because, well, that is what they had at the store the day I bought running socks. They work great, although I am probably paying too much. But then I knew that was going to happen when I bought socks at a running store. They have black ones, though, which is nice... goes with my shoes.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Sunday, 22 March 2015 03:34 (eleven years ago)
i wear cheap cotton socks
― lag∞n, Sunday, 22 March 2015 05:55 (eleven years ago)

― erry red flag (f. hazel), Sunday, 22 March 2015 06:11 (eleven years ago)
I'm not really fussy about socks at all, I just wear whatever I have on my feet at the time.
― cgi bubka (NickB), Sunday, 22 March 2015 07:33 (eleven years ago)
my feet are super fussy about socks but I've never worked out what the criteria are (can't be too thick, can't be too thin, etc) - basically I find one type of sock that I can run in and keep buying it until it's discontinued, then have a miserable search for another type, and so on

Brighton Marathon today, let's see how well my dodgy leg holds up.
A: It won't
― yeovil knievel (NickB), Sunday, 12 April 2015 06:17 (eleven years ago)
My IT band held up in the end - I am amazed by this! From about halfway onwards I was expecting it to go south at any minute but weirdly I didn't even feel a twinge. I smashed into the wall though: my calves slowly turned to concrete in the second half of the race, and at about 22 miles it felt like someone had dropped an anvil on me - I don't think I've ever found it quite as hard to move forwards before. Am putting that down to not drinking and eating enough in an attempt to avoid any stomach issues - probably a dumb move because it was actually quite a warm day, and I totally collapsed after finishing through lack of sugar and dehydration. I knew had a coke in my kit bag at the finish, but I couldn't find my bag at all after about 15 minutes of searching with mounting hysteria, so I just sat down in the street and wept like a baby for about a minute. It was really sad :(
Anyhow, 3:21 in the end. I didn't really do any specific training for the event - no speedwork or steady tempo stuff, have mostly been doing slow easy miles to try and avoid aggravating my injury, so I'm fairly happy with that. Mostly I'm relieved to get it over and done with, it really really hurt. Think I'll go back to trotting through woods with a backpack full of sandwiches for the rest of this year.
