RIP borderlands: http://borderlands-books.blogspot.com/2015/02/borderlands-books-to-close-in-march.html?m=1

Οὖτις, Sunday, 1 February 2015 21:37 (eleven years ago)

I didn't realize that it had been there for 18 years! I remember being mildly resentful when it opened, because I was quite fond of what had been there before ... though now I forget what it was.

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Sunday, 1 February 2015 21:42 (eleven years ago)

Ha

I will be really bummed if this closes lost weekend too, which i frequent much more often

Οὖτις, Sunday, 1 February 2015 21:47 (eleven years ago)

That's terrible. I love that bookstore.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Sunday, 1 February 2015 22:40 (eleven years ago)

i think the last time i went in there (maybe a year ago), they didn't have the thing I was looking for that in my mind they totally should have had, but still, it was a decent place and what will inevitably replace it will be much worse.

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Sunday, 1 February 2015 22:53 (eleven years ago)

It has been a while for me, but I remember when I finished Engines of the Night and I was like I want to read all these book Malzberg talks about that I haven't read, I just went in there and for like $15 got like seven of them (the Syndic, Rogue Moon, Bug Jack Barron, Persistence of Vision, etc).

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Sunday, 1 February 2015 23:00 (eleven years ago)

then again, the last time I went into Adobe (which was last month), I didn't find anything along the lines of what I was looking for either, so maybe it's just me.

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Sunday, 1 February 2015 23:03 (eleven years ago)

i'm getting pretty tired of businesses constantly pointing out, in explicit yet pass-agg terms, that the reason they're closing or increasing prices is bc of min wage increases or employee healthcare costs. esp when they don't append it with something like 'and that's how it should be, bc ppl deserve to earn a living wage'.

just1n3, Monday, 2 February 2015 00:58 (eleven years ago)

yeah, independent bookstore owners have been getting rich off their employees' blood, sweat and tears for far too long.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Monday, 2 February 2015 04:44 (eleven years ago)

i mean i voted for the measure but if we're talking books vs restaurants Amazon doesn't offer a living wage in Des Moines let alone SF

resulting post (rogermexico.), Monday, 2 February 2015 04:46 (eleven years ago)

it doesn't matter - if your business model isn't profitable enough to afford to pay your employees a fair wage, then too bad, blame the customers who aren't coming in. they imply an exemption should be made for businesses like theirs but then go on to say that no one is gonna work for them when they could be earning more elsewhere.

my boss is one of the most useless business owners i've known, in huge amounts of debt and just basically terrible at running a successful business, and even she's still gonna survive this wage increase (and this is clothing retail, where are margins are already really slim and our prices high).

I for one salute our new high-end optical boutiques

resulting post (rogermexico.), Monday, 2 February 2015 06:20 (eleven years ago)

on a different note ... I'm kinda skeptical this random panhandler dude they picked up in the suitcase/dismemberment murder is really the dude, seems kind of unlikely

Οὖτις, Monday, 2 February 2015 17:43 (eleven years ago)

Really? I found it incredibly likely- from the start this seemed like something that someone mentally ill and living on the streets would do (vs a gang murder as some suggested).

dismembering a body is p difficult, kinda hard to do while living on the street. idk I am not a detective there is tons of stuff about this I don't know (and don't want to know) but a) I don't have a lot of faith in the SFPD, b) picking up a random transient is kind of predictable scapegoating that happens *all the time*, and c) the description in the Chronicle of dude's apartment doesn't really scream murder scene

Οὖτις, Monday, 2 February 2015 18:55 (eleven years ago)

Well I guess we'll see. I thought it seemed to insanely OTT for a gang murder, which tend to just be shootings.

Dokken played here for a Ribfest and people were total assholes (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 2 February 2015 18:59 (eleven years ago)

how did he transport the victim?

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Monday, 2 February 2015 19:00 (eleven years ago)

Well one thing that was said initially by the cops was that they don't even know if there was a murder to begin with. If he encountered someone dead on the street, it's not impossible to imagine hacking up the body 'onsite' so to speak.

But this is leading me down a path in my mind I'm not keen on visiting. I spend a reasonable amount of time in and near that area and can easily imagine how horrific it must have been to discover any of it.

The only good point that dude has made is that small business should be getting the same tax breaks as Twitter et al. That's what is really killing small business.

Although having more LGBT-friendly public spaces is wonderful, when celebrating leather, otherwise-compassionate members of the community should be aware that leather production is the result of extreme animal suffering (especially since most comes from India and China where animal welfare laws are virtually non-existent and unenforced), and the tanning process (to preserve animal flesh designed to decompose) uses many toxic chemicals that poison humans who work at or nearby tanneries, as well as the environment. There are many humane and environmentally-better alternatives now - please consider those instead!

there should be one of those clickbait quizzes where you have to pick the era of the anti-gentrification posters: 90s or now?

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Tuesday, 3 March 2015 19:45 (eleven years ago)

the question nobody's asking: is there a link between gentrification and nicely letterpressed posters

two weeks pass...

Sunday, April 19th, my kids' school is having a pie social fundraiser. You can sign up to make a pie (and potentially win a KitchenAid mixer), or just come eat lots of pie and support the kids/meet an ilxor.
