Brian Brown from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has found a phorid that beheads ants in an entirely new way.Brown is an authority on phorids and especially the ant-decapitating, bee-killing varieties. He has discovered around 500 species of them. In the field, he lures them in by crushing ants and other insects with forceps, and watching what arrives. Some phorids feed directly off the injured insects. Others lay their eggs inside. But one species, Dohrniphora longirostrata, did something different.

Because of general cultural momentum, I read the first book and started the second. 1) It's amazing how much the show sticks to (at least) the first book and much of the second, so far. 2) I really respect GRRM's world building. 3) GRRM is a pretty terrible writer, he said, wiping the grease from his beard as the great Horn of Aroo sounded. "Aroooooooooo," went the horn. Pyp the Dwarf was taken aback. Was that indeed the Horn o Aroo? "Aroooooooooooooooooooo," went the Horn again. Yes, thought Pyp, there could be no mistaking it. Pyp stood on his two wobbly legs, weak from mead but misshapen from birth, and faced his army of sellswords. "Tonight," he began, his voice steadily rising, greatly disproportionate to his short stature, "we ride ... to reclaim what is ours!" The sellswords and barbarians, also wiping grease from their beards, responded with a mighty clash of weapons, ringing out in the night like the cry of a great Jungle Beast, which no man has ever seen south of the Wall but which every child knows from their nightmares. To Pyp it sounded like so much gold being spilled out, the cost of procuring an army on such short notice. But if there's anything a sellsword prizes more than weapons, it's gold, and anyone able to disperse such bounty to these kingdom-free men understood too well the dangers of men who fight not for honor but for money.
And so on.

Oh, to have just one more lemon cake. Instead, Meretricia had only the dimly lit view of her cell to sustain her. What could be going on outside her damp walls? She imagined she was back at the tourney, watching knights vie for her attentions. She remembered the look Ser Drake gave her as if it were yesterday. Ah, Ser Drake. It had been folly to confuse his glare for affection rather than suspicion, and now she was paying the price, but Meretricia knew it was only a matter of time for world to reach her father on the Isle of Snakes before his venom-tinged vengeance freed her from this prison. And then all the lemon cake in the world, served on platters of Valyrian steel, would be hers once again. And Ser Drake would be forced to eat them until his stomach burst, his insides spilled, the the dreaded Byrds of Parthon descended and feasted on his steaming entrails. Only then would Meretrica be satisfied, and the honor of House Serpenttongue restored.

Good luck on book 2, i have attempted it a couple of times during the show's off-season but haven't been able to make it more than 50 pages in. it is just terrible

― lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 15:08 (nine years ago) link
maybe during the downtime the characters learn important skills, like a new programming language. between violent incidents the reader is expected to study along with the characters. new chapters are only available after the reader passes an ability check. at the end of the book you've not only learned which family has won the throne game, but you can also program your own throne game based off of dnd5e rules

anyway, back to the subject, sorry. i'll be watching the last few episodes of the last season to try to remember what the hell was going on. i'm looking forward to the new season, but i have to admit that the way they release episodes doesn't really work well for me these days. the 10-episode seasons come and go in a few months, then decades pass in real life, i have children, i buy a house, i have a lost weekend and then another, then it's time for a new GoT season.

oh, none of those things have happened except for the lost weekend(s? can't remember). but my point is that they could, given the episode release structure, if only i wasn't so busy coding my throne game
