My first marathon goal was sub 4. My actual progression: 5:40, 4:31, DNF, 3:36.
But if you think you got it, go for it. You'll certainly have a better grasp of your capability once you start your 18-20 mile training runs though.

daaamn, what happened on that third one?
― Simon H., Sunday, 11 January 2015 04:05 (eleven years ago)
(props for persistence btw)
― Simon H., Sunday, 11 January 2015 04:06 (eleven years ago)
I don't think a 3:30 marathon is a realistic goal based on a 2:00 half tbh; 4:00 would still be quite tough but not impossible. The first marathon should be more of a learning experience than a near-death one, once you get a feel for the race and your limits you can set a more ambitious target.
― Vote in the ILM EOY Poll! (seandalai), Sunday, 11 January 2015 13:15 (eleven years ago)
agree with seandalai, though i would say you should definitely schedule in a half-marathon in march or april and use that as a guide instead, it'll be much more relevant and it'll be a good dress rehearsal too.

did my first long training run of the year today after a couple months off. bit of a windy day but it was just lovely being out there again. i am so tired now though, it's only three in the afternoon and i can't wait to go to bed already
― Ottbot jr (NickB), Sunday, 11 January 2015 15:06 (eleven years ago)
i took a week off cause of a lil pulled muscle and now i am a coward about the cold apparently
― lag∞n, Sunday, 11 January 2015 17:21 (eleven years ago)
Xpost my DNF was most likely caused by improper fueling. It has taken me a while to figure out what actually works for me, and I'm still trying to perfect it. So many variables in running a marathon, many of which you have no control over.
The McMillan calculator (http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/index.php/calcUsage/calculate) says the equivalent of a 2 hour half would be a 4:12 full. This is assuming you do all the proper training for that distance and run in similar conditions. Seems like that would be a more reasonable goal.
Although, when I plug in my 1:36 half, it says I should run a 3:22, so your mileage may vary.
― Jeff, Sunday, 11 January 2015 18:39 (eleven years ago)
I haven't run in a couple of weeks, my plantar fasciitis finally got bad enough that I tried complete rest. I'm not sure it's better though, but I'm going to do a test run tomorrow.
I'm pretty depressed about it all, my body just feels like a sloth when I'm not putting in the miles. I need to have a goal and a methodical plan to work towards it. I thought maybe this year I'd run another full and see if I could position myself to go for a BQ in 2016, but seems unlikely now.
― Jeff, Sunday, 11 January 2015 18:45 (eleven years ago)
oh jeff that sucks. is there anything that can be done to treat it?
― Ottbot jr (NickB), Sunday, 11 January 2015 20:38 (eleven years ago)
plantar is the pits

Hi all. Hope y'all have a wonderful running-induced endorfin rich year ahead of you, and a speedy (harhar) recovery for the thread starter!
2014 was nothing special for me, running-wise. Have barely been able to keep up a regular running scheme throughout the year. Haven't done any running during the holiday season but have picked it up slowly and am aiming for a more active 2015.
Started a new job in the final quarter of last year that involves a long commute which makes running on weekdays rather difficult to schedule BUT I've found a running mate at work (showers available) so now we go for a run once a week during lunch and aim to increase the frequency during the next months.
Targets: 15K in nov, half marathon in january '16 and then maybe a full one in april '16. I dread running 42K but my running mate has run one in the past and would like to have another go at it so he's trying to get me to go too. We'll see... I think there's room in the scheme for one or two additional 10-15K's in the summer.

first snowy run to work this year today - break out the soft sad twinkly techno!

must have been almost about 4mm deep in places out there, somehow managed to survive it though

u r brave
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:35 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, I always salute winter runners, you tough bastards
On 3rd week of training. Trying to focus mostly on endurance and losing some weight rather than speed for now. A friend who has run marathons has said that supposedly 1lb = 5 mins off your marathon time. I'm sure that's not an exact/universal figure but it's a hell of a motivator.
― Simon H., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:39 (eleven years ago)
Did a half marathon this morning, managed to make my goal time of a sub-2:00 finish! Ended up doing it in 1:57. Very happy right now. Yay 2015!

thanks! walking up the two flights of stairs to my apartment also took just under two hours.

just wait until you have to go down
― seandalai, Sunday, 25 January 2015 22:51 (eleven years ago)
all in the game though
oh man down is so much worse
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 26 January 2015 01:15 (eleven years ago)
you'll be fine on Wednesday though

I ordered a pizza so I wouldn't have to take the stairs again until tomorrow

I'm paranoid about running on snow or ice, but hate the treadmill. Do you wear grips on your shoes or wear trail shoes or do anything special to avoid slipping around?
― Brio2, Monday, 26 January 2015 17:09 (eleven years ago)
anyone try yaktrax? https://www.yaktrax.com/#
― Brio2, Monday, 26 January 2015 17:11 (eleven years ago)
I think yaktrax are useless in most scenarios, especially on ice. I find that if you keep your stride short and land with your foot under your body, you can run without slip sliding around too much, as long as it is flat land. Problem comes when I'm stopping at stop lights, that's where I usually slip.
Nice one f.hzl! Was this your first half marathon?
― Jeff, Monday, 26 January 2015 21:41 (eleven years ago)
Week four of marathon training on the readed treadmill has begun. Apparently I need to be wearing some kind of fancier exercise shirt or something because my right nipple bled from chafing quite a lot during/after today's run (!)
― Simon H., Monday, 26 January 2015 23:26 (eleven years ago)
Waterproof bandages on the nips! I can't in more than a mile without them.
― Jeff, Monday, 26 January 2015 23:59 (eleven years ago)
Ouch! I get the chafing on longer runs, but only in the winter. A bit of Body Glide or similar is also pretty effective for that. That probably won't cut it if your issue is severe; mine is pretty mild. What kind of fabric is your shirt? I had one in the past where the fabric was fine which had some kind of screenprinting that caused the chafing... had to toss that one.
Jeff, thanks! It was only my second one... beat last year's time by 12 minutes. The course was much easier, however. Still, it means I can shoot for getting under 1:50 next year, a challenging but doable goal.
It's interesting how far excitement and adrenaline will get you. I struggled to maintain a sub-nine minute pace for four miles during my training runs, but during the half marathon I managed it for three times that distance. By the 12th mile I was definitely physically running out of gas but wow.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 01:17 (eleven years ago)
It was just a plain cotton shirt. And it must have been pretty mad, 'cause when the eight miles was up I noticed a significant brownish red stain own the front. Ow!
will pick up some bandages before tomorrow's run...
― Simon H., Tuesday, 27 January 2015 01:50 (eleven years ago)
yeah, cotton makes chafing a lot worse. bandages will work, but try a tech shirt and see if that ameliorates the problem.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 03:07 (eleven years ago)
^^^^ otm
― so not gonna häpna (seandalai), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 01:27 (eleven years ago)
tried a tech shirt today, still bled something fierce! bandages it is.
― Simon H., Wednesday, 28 January 2015 01:39 (eleven years ago)
maybe take a few days off and heal up first?
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 03:32 (eleven years ago)
Just accept your life with bandages. ACCEPT.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 04:22 (eleven years ago)
I still got two more training runs this week (tomorrow and friday) and I ain't missing 'em. The bandage life for me.
― Simon H., Wednesday, 28 January 2015 04:35 (eleven years ago)
Tight tech undershirt did the trick. Phew!
Midway through training week 5 (of 20). Just did my first ten-miler - 97:36. I'll take it.
― Simon H., Tuesday, 3 February 2015 22:06 (eleven years ago)

Ever been on a run and craved something savory like...pizza?!? Next time, why not take a slice of pizza with you?
― let me be your fan taytay (NickB), Thursday, 5 February 2015 22:20 (eleven years ago)
dear lord
― Simon H., Thursday, 5 February 2015 22:32 (eleven years ago)
I saw that the other day. Want to try.
― Jeff, Thursday, 5 February 2015 22:37 (eleven years ago)
Want sort of foul beast would ever crave squeezy pizza halfway through a run?
Xp oh right
― let me be your fan taytay (NickB), Thursday, 5 February 2015 22:48 (eleven years ago)
hahaha
I don't think I have ever craved anything but water during a run, and I feel very unpleasant if I eat anything closer than like 2.5 hrs beforehand
― Simon H., Thursday, 5 February 2015 23:00 (eleven years ago)
I have craved food on a long run but at that stage I am also craving just stopping and lying down on the comfy concrete, if I act on it there's no way I can continue.
