lol Sia is weird and terrible

I mean her stage shows specifically, which I guess are designed to distract you from the fact that she doesn't want to be on stage

I watched that. Sia with the visor or something hanging down so you couldn't see her face. I don't get her appeal, but she seems like the type of singer that Lady Gaga fans would like.

I liked the Bushwick Brooklyn sketch with Kevin Hart, Jay Pharoah and Keenan. Kate Mckinnon doing Justin Bieber's Calvin Klein ad also was kinda funny

Sure was a lot of death by gunfire in this episode.

Was hoping that the monitor would have never started working again in the Instagram show sketch. That would have been a delicious disaster considering that the whole premise rode on being able to see the photos.

Yea, that mayo portion of the ending for the Bushwick Brooklyn sketch was a little unsettling.

Was cracking up this week at how serious Kate & Aidy were on the "The Wishing Boot" song this week.

Michael Che seems to be settling into update pretty well. The Riblet bit with Bobby this week was great.

Not true; Eddie hosted on December 15, 1984 (with musical guest Robert Plant and the Honeydrippers). Probably the best episode that season, with one of Eddie's (and SNL's) all-time career highlights, the "White Like Me" short film.

Al Franken is probably the only competition Eddie has in terms of "importance" because he literally shapes American policy these days

Jon Lovitz and Norm MacDonald are another couple of tethers that helped to barely hold the show together over chasms of near-cancellation.

lovitz yes but wasn't norm's biggest accomplishment behind-the-scenes pissing off don ohlemeyer?

I just mean that he was one of the only holdovers when the the show was floundering and the cast was rebuilt from the ground up, and also arguably the main reason why a lot of people were still watching at that particular time.

purely in terms of popularity, i would guess that adam sandler has even murphy beat. and slightly below that level, there's will ferrell.

john belushi - first america's sweetheart
bill murray - first breakout star not from original cast
eddie murphy - only breakout star of the lorneless period
jon lovitz - only guy from 85 anyone liked
mike myers - got the kids into it
adam sandler - ran with that kids ball something fierece
will ferrell - first breakout star after the show resurrected from kids ball hell
tina fey - possibly more important as a head-writer, but largely erased kids ball from the show
andy samberg - viral pioneer

Don't know how long it's been since you've seen the 93-94 or 94-95 seasons, but that last stretch with the previous cast is largely dire and the new cast were slow growers. Spade was only doing his little Snark Talk segment during his last season and McKinney wasn't much of a draw. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that Weekend Update was the diamond in that rough patch at least until Ferrell, Shannon, et al built up a decent head of steam.

i'm not saying norm wasn't good and doesn't have his fans, i've just never heard any commentary from the snl folks along the lines of "thank god we had norm mcdonald"

where lovitz gets a lot of praise for being a glimmer of hope

i think you're conflating "norm was the only reason i was watching" with "norm was the only reason the network didn't cancel it"

Well, the former is certainly true, but while I wouldn't say the latter is explicitly true, they sure didn't have much else going on for about a year there.
